This past year I canoed the BWCA for 8 days and took the Victorinox SwissChamp with me. I had many choices of knives and multitools to take but the SwissChamp had all of the tools I needed for this trip. The large knife filleted fish, the fish scaler scaled, the scissors cut braided and mono fish line, the sewing awl and pliers repaired leather shoes, the mag glass and tweezers removed a tick, the saw helped to prep kindling, the package hook lifted a teapot off the fire, the corkscrew loosened a stubborn knot. Need I say more?
I have carried a SAK for 60+ years, Scouts, Vietnam and in the plumbing trade. Great, handy tool. Just recently I have given away 20+ Classic SAK, mostly to women friends. Consistently have received positive feedback from them; scissors always handy and they we amazed at how useful they were used. Do I also carry a second ( third?) folder? Yes.
Not only are they far superior than the imitations, but they are superior to many other options for dedicated outdoor knives. The fact that I can take any Swiss army knife surf fishing and not worry about sand is case and point.
I love my Swiss Army knives. I have somewhere around 10 of them. They’re small, light (unobtrusive) and most average knife carriers don’t need anything with a super steel that they can’t replace if they lose or break it. Are they ideal for cutting cardboard 40 hours a week? No. But in a pinch they’re great to have if you pick the right one for you, and if someone around you wants a knife to borrow, they’re perfect for that too. People who need to borrow a knife don’t need to know about every blade i’m carrying.
I own 35 Victorinox Swiss Army knives and I love them all. I love their versatility, the high quality for a very affordable price, and the variety of materials and tools depending on the multitool. My favorites are the Alox's (Farmer X, Pioneer X and Cadets), the Rambler, the Climber (in white), the Compact (in blue), the Sportsman, and my Outrider. I often carry my Cadet and Climber in my bag, and my Rambler around my neck. I own many fixed and folding knives, and my Victorinox's are among my favorites. And I've never seen an Alox Rambler! I'd love one of those.
I love my SAKs. It's not intimidating/scary when you pull it out in certain situations. Its a great car/travel knife (in the US...don't know about regs in other countries). Its one of the few knives with a file that really works. Lots of positives that far outweigh any negatives for me.
Absolutely! Got a Rescue Tool in my car, a Classic on my keychain, a Pioneer Solo in my pocket (if someone asks for a knife)..and the Venture and Spirit X on my belt..and a s#itload more stuffed away in drawers around the house 😅
Fun-Facts: Victorinox makes SAK models with pliers that are way stronger than they look. The scissors are also strong & sharp enough to be reliable wire cutters.

I every day carry a Victorinox, I think it’s the “Climber,” chosen because it has a Philips head and a corkscrew. I also EDC a pocket knife, usually a PM2 or a Bugout, for when I need to cut something. Love and use them all regularly.
The crkt razelcliffe is impeccable, I work at Aldi and they provide really strange safety cutters that I find very annoying so I just use my razelcliffe for everything.
Question: Working as a janitor at a school. I work at night so I have been given permission to bring my own tools for the tasks needed since kids are out when I work. I have been carrying Leatherman Free P4 and T4 for all my box breaking and screw and lock maintenance. I am looking for a fixed blade that can be deep carried in the pocket or worn as a neck knife (neck knife preferably) that won't break the bank to lessen the load on my multi tools. Is there a good small option that is ~175 with a sheath included or a cheaper one that I can get a separate sheath around that price? Thanks for the answer in advance. You all give great information and I love the content.
Hey DCA, Thomas & Seth. Really love the work you do. I'm here today to take a crack at giving the compression lock a generic name. My understanding is; a compression lock is nothing but a top mounted/reverse liner lock with a stop pin or "wedge" attached to it. When the knife is open, the stop pin/wedge keeps the knife open & the blade secured in place. So, if people starts calling it a "Wedge Lock" instead of a compression lock, I don't think anybody would have anything to complain about. What do you think?
I have a Cybertool. Use it every day multiple times. When i hand it out to someone for cutting, i offer it with the small knife. It never offends anyone. But…. It weeeel cut!
The compression lock could be viewed as mechanically equivalent to the Tri-Ad lock, just using the liner rather than a rocker bar as the handle's moving element. 'Tri-Liner lock' and 'Liner-Ad lock' are options. Others: 'Top Liner lock', 'Side Liner lock', 'Squeeze lock'. My favorite, as it reflects both how the liner tongue fits between tang ramp and stop pin, and how its disengaged: 'Pinch lock'.
It is always nice having Seth on camera, and, the only downside of having Thomas in front of the camera, is not having him off camera, missing those snarky remarks.
Hi all, love the show! What’s the purpose of a bolster on a folding knife? Why are they so common on the classic knife styles (e.g., stockman, trapper, canoe, etc.)? I’ve also noticed that a lot of the KnifeCenter exclusives have titanium bolsters (e.g., CJRB Ekko and CJRB Pyrite Bowie). Is it more than just looks? I can’t find a good answer. Thanks!
For the EDC wharncliffe - I have a Cold Steel Tuff Lite that does a brilliant job of random utility tasks. Wicked edge at the end of the hollow grind and enough thickness to back it up; unstoppable lockup, and remarkable handle comfort. Dulls pretty quickly but sharpens up super easy.
Can't believe Thomas missed his big chance to mention that the CRKT Razel(probably spelt that wrong so forgive me) is an actual true Reverse Tonto!! Great installment fellas, love the B-Team lol
Victorinox rules b/c it's the perfect combination of non-threatening and utility. I use my Compact daily. Even the parcel hook gets used to put the bikechain back on. I have more expensive knives. But i don't carry them a lot; in my daily life as a teacher and a father they wouldn't get used as much as the Vic tools.
Definitely one of the best brands out there. I'm probably out of control but I must have no less than 2 dozen Victorinonox knives. They're fun to collect. Love Victorinox.
I have collected all of the Icons in the Beat the Icon content and I now carry a 940 Osborne more often than the Enduras that I have carried since they (and Glock) came on the scene. The sweet spot regarding price is between 100 & $200 because I really use, and sometimes lose, these knives. I have been pleasantly surprised by character of the different tools and your curating of them, so thank you for that.
I wholeheartedly agree with Seth's call to bring back the Rambler. I love that knife. While I'm at it, PLEASE bring back the 74mm Executive with the Pen Blade, Small Blade, Scissors, Nail Filer, and Orange Peeler. It was far and away my favorite SAK ever made (followed closely by the super tinker my late father carried for as long as I can remember). I carried one for years as my backup knife, but now that I can't get one anymore I've been relegated to carrying the Compact SD because I fear losing my executive.
Victorinox knives WORK the blades cut better than most, sharpen easily, and have extra bits-n-bobs that add value NO knife has with the same functional quality. They cost less than most any other and no one else is even in the same league for fit, finish, and quality.
SAK's are probably the "best" choice for edc here in the UK they're pretty much universally accepted and don't cause much fuss. They have models to suit everyone. My Dad carries one, my daughter carries one, I carry one. Cheers 🍻
Also, the classic versions are legal to carry anywhere in Europe as far as I am aware of. If I do not choose to carry anything in particular, I carry one of them.
Victorinox is the brand that is the go-to knife brand for a ton of people because it is the household name everybody knows. They're very widely available in retail and are the only knife brand most people will see and recognize growing up at one point or another. As such it has become the go-to brand for people who, for whatever reason, purchase a knife but don't possess any significant knowledge of knives and what makes them work. Sure the knives produced by Victorinox are of adequate built quality and are affordable but that is where their practical qualities end when compared to competition. The steel Victorinox uses in all of its products is of relatively low quality and heat-treated to be quite soft. The plastic and rubber used as scales in the majority of Victorinox's line-up are fragile and cannot be removed for cleaning or replacement by the consumer. The spring-action used in both the slip-joint and independent spring tools such as pliers or scissors isn't very strong nor are the springs durable enough for long-term frequent use. I believe Victorinox has become a victim of its success when it comes to the quality of its products, having become complacent with innovating with its products because they don't have to. Whilst other manufacturers have improved and innovated both with new materials and functions, Victorinox has sat idle. On the current knife market, Victorinox survives and thrives off brand recognition and the unwarranted brand loyalty of its consumers. I've personally carried a Ruike-LD51B as a multitool for about three years now and it outperforms an SAK in almost every way despite the product being based on that of Victorinox. Ruike has had to make a name for itself not through brand loyalty or lack of competition but through innovation and the quality of its products. The result is a line of products that, in terms of materials and practicality, puts Victorinox to shame.
Hi DCA, Seth, Thomas, I live in France where we have a restrictive knife law and people arround me tend to be scared about knives (they find a Ladybug or McBee intimidating due to the « tactical look »). I tried a Boker multi tool but they were again scared. So I mainly use SAK such as victorinox or MKM Malga 6. I noticed that whatever looks like a normal size SAK with wood handles tends to be acceptable, such as a Fox Livri. Wood especially seems to reassures them. If possible not locking. Would you have any recommendations for a knife looking like a SAK or Laguiole, with a modern PM steel (Magnacut, S35VN or similar) ? Keep on the great work ! Harry
Lionsteel CK edition. Case Highbanks rosewood. Tuya MAS desert ironwood. Wesn Samla rosewood. Fontenille Pataud Le Capuchadou. Jack Wolf models in rosewood. Leatherman Bond, PS style, CS style, Micra, Squirt and Rebar are non-locking multi-tools if you wanna try a different style of multi-tools.
@@icygecko thanks a lot icygecko, the Tuya MAS would fit exactly and the fingerchoil adds some safety. I did not know this brand, thanks you ! The Jack Wolf is a good option too. At Fontenille Pataud, there is indeed some options for customization to have RWL34 or Damasteel.
@@HarryK-ir7tv I own all these as I live in the UK. Yup my Fontenille is in Rwl34 and has my name on the filework. Tuya MAS you can get it from Lamnia. The leather slip that comes along with it is one of the best too because it has a pocket clip on it. It won the best knife in a German magazine if I recall.
Hey DCA/crew here is something that i was hoping you could shed some light on for all us knife lovers. For example i just heard last year that ZT is affiliated with Kershaw, not to mention the whole Boker brand confusion. Hoping you can clear this up. Also we know that Byrd is Spyderco’s sub brand, and Sencut Civivi and We are all sister companies. What are the other major sister knife brands? Thx. Keep up the great content. (Also quick shout out. thx to Seth and Thomas and camera crew for manning the ship for DCA)
I carry a victorinox compact every single day, have a classic SD on my work keys and my favourite tool in my whole collection is my walnut scale evo 17 that I got as a gift on my first Father’s Day
I have a question about your GAK. Could you tell me if the saw has side to side pivot wiggle and if there is any gap between the main blade / cap lifter and liners causing up and down movement? TIA
I use my classic almost everyday. I use it to trim my beard and cutting down six pack soda bottle plastic. I have it razor sharp and no complaints. Oh, and it’s also an early 1970’s model that belonged to my grandfather. These things last man.
@@casualcanoer2426 that would make it simple. I think people would know what we are talking about about if we started calling it that. Unless it's already taken
Possible question. I find the Case 253 Mini Blackhorn to be ideal for light duty EDC because it is dead simple, disapears in the pocket, has a long slicey blade (especially considering the compact size), and has a serviceable handle shape. Only problem...it feels kind of cheap. Is there a more upscale knife with similar characteristics?
I have a few good folding knives but I am thinking about buying a good fixed blade now. I’m looking for something versatile, reliable and resistant, with a decent sized blade but without being too bulky. More to the point, considering the zombie apocalypse that is inevitably upon us, which fixed blade you’d recommend as an all-around survival tool, good for bushcraft, hunt, urban use and, naturally, defending oneself from the hordes of the undead? Congratulations on the amazing channel. You are responsible for addicting me in perceiving what should be ordinary cutting tools as collectible works of art.
I have a Victirinox "Locksmith" that was purchased in Switzerland and customized at the factory with my name/date of purchase, presented to me as a gift from my parents when they visited on vacation... it is my EDC since 2000. Victorinox also has a place in my kitchen... the rosewood handled line is high quality and very capable of everyday work. Jack of all trades master of none? Yeah right... Victorinox is not a display case grail knife only used by lames to brag about the materials that they never really use except to cut open their Amazon deliveries and show off to the nerds in the office... Victorinox makes dependable gear that works for real. Don't even get me started on the 2 Victorinix INOX watches I own, one Titanium black dial and one Stainless blue dial... they are as tough and accurate as can be.
Why not call the Compression Lock something easy that just trips of the tongue, how about "The C-lock" ? Uncomplicated, straight forward and easy to remember for everyone ? Great to see you Seth, and an absolute miracle having Thomas out from behind the camera ! He has so much more to give than just great wit during the show ? Bless you all. 🙏☺️🤗❤️🖖✌️
11:18 just use a utility blade. They're razer sharp, super thin, and cheap to replace. Cuts those tough materials more effortlessly than a pocket knife ever will and replacing the blade will always be faster than sharpening it. Olight's folding utility or the new Civivi Elementum utility are good options.
When I pull out a SAK in an office environment - even a 110 mm - no one looks twice. Any other knife on that table, though, may draw serious stares (or a call to HR) when people hear the quick-open action.
Hello, like the show but. You mentioned that Reate has tighter tolerances than Aerospace spec.’s? I going out on a limb, but have you seen aerospace spec’s on some of GE or Pratt components, some are held to the thousandth and the millionth.
I started my knife jearney with a classic sd and now I have a few of them. I have the classic on my car keys and I carry a hunter as a EDC. Yes the hunter does have tools I never use but a real SAK even one with little tools will be a great EDC. Especially when you with people that aren't into knives SAK doesn't intimidate them
Hey Thomas, I have an OHO 111mm GAK and the saw has side to side play at the pivot when deployed that wiggles the main blade inside but deployed main blade doesn't have it. Also, The liners don't quite reach the tangs by a mm or two so there's movement there as well. Haven't gotten a lot of feedback when asking about this so idk how common or if it's a case of substandard lots... Some say rock solid, and some say lock rock. I wouldn't expect this from victorinox and haven't experienced this in any other model. Do you see any wiggle on your outrider saw? For all others that came here bc it's a SAK vid with a 111mm, what say you?
Hey DCA, Seth, and Thomas. My current EDC/work knife is a Civi Riffle with 14C28N. One of the facilities I maintain at work has a pool so I’m always around or in water, I also handle a lot of chemicals because of the pool. I blunted the edge one day and must’ve gotten something on it and didn’t clean it properly before I put it away. It took me a while to get around to sharpening it, when I did I found it had started to develop some rust in a few spots. I cleaned it with scotch bright and oil, resharpen and it’s back in service, but I’m wondering if you could recommend a better knife for such an environment? A folder or fixed blade of similar specs to the Riffle for under $100 ideally. Thanks
@@debbiej.2168 I have looked at them. I don’t necessarily love the way spyderco knives look. I don’t hate them either, but there are so many better looking knives out there and it would be nice to find one that offers the same level of utility with looks that I like.
I have a knife question!! How come so many premium knives most commonly come in frame locks? Why is there not as many newer lock styles in the + $200 price point?
I saw they were coming out with a swiss army knife the other day minus one specific item. I thought it was going to be the corkscrew only to find out it was the blade. LoL
Hi Knifecenter! I'm looking for a fidget knife with a thumb hole as well as thumb studs. It has to be a frame lock or a liner lock. I've only been able to find the QSP Hornbill. Is that really the only knife with the mentioned configuration (thumb hole+studs - frame/liner lock)? Price, steel and blade shape/length doesn't matter - only the sweet fidgetness.
Hey guys, I hope DCA is okay. I'm fairly new to the knife world and i don't know that many good value knives or knife brands and was looking for some options. I'm looking for a premium feeling knife around the $100 - $250 mark though if its a bit over that's fine and, due to knife laws in my country, ideally it would have a blade under 4 inches. If you do answer this thank you very much and I love your content.
Hi DCA, thank you for your channel. I’m on the market to buy a Chris Reeve 31 sebenza. But I can decide between a large and a small. Can you make a size comparison with well known knives like pm2, bugout or Buck 110 to help me out? Thank you so much. With kind regards from France !!
Bought my first Swiss Army knife while on liberty in Naples Italy 1976. 15 years later one of the handles cracked. I contacted Victorinox, they fixed it for free. Was without it for 2 weeks. So I bought another one. Still have both of them. Carried even why flying until 911 and stupid rules kicked in
I’m such a fan of Victoria Nox then I bought one of their watches. It tore up in six months and they were real jerks about repairing it. If you think about it, I’ve not really had that much. Good luck at their knives either.
Regarding the generic Compression Lock name, since the liner has a tab that fits into a notch in the blade, I was thinking something like "tab lock" or "notch lock." Maybe "tab notch lock." Since it's on the top side of the knife, it could also be called a "top notch lock," which it certainly is.

The warncliff utility blade question, measure once cut twice, Cold Steel Tuff Lite (or mini Tuff Lite)
First thing on my mind was the Mini Tuff Lite as well, and seeing they are on sale you could even get 2 of them!
How they even forget it? It was exactly the only knife I immediately thought about after hearing the question.
Agree! I always have mine in my car and have used it several times.
I've got one serrated. Light, cheap, great lock... Perfect answer

Hi DCA, Seth, Thomas,
I live in France where we have a restrictive knife law and people arround me tend to be scared about knives (they find a Ladybug or McBee intimidating due to the « tactical look »).
@@icygecko thanks a lot :)
I carry a victorinox compact every single day, have a classic SD on my work keys and my favourite tool in my whole collection is my walnut scale evo 17 that I got as a gift on my first Father’s Day
I have a sak pioneer x in my bag always, and I have a rambler in my wallet attached to a small prybar, I also very much enjoy the German army trekker.
I have a question about your GAK. Could you tell me if the saw has side to side pivot wiggle and if there is any gap between the main blade / cap lifter and liners causing up and down movement? TIA
Can we get a video of the top 10 most expensive knives in the store?
I use my classic almost everyday. I use it to trim my beard and cutting down six pack soda bottle plastic. I have it razor sharp and no complaints. Oh, and it’s also an early 1970’s model that belonged to my grandfather. These things last man.
we could call the generic compression lock a pinch lock, or a squeeze lock. maybe the grip lock
I like the pinch lock, that makes sense in my brain.
@@casualcanoer2426 that would make it simple. I think people would know what we are talking about about if we started calling it that. Unless it's already taken
I love DCA, but you guys are great as well. I’m very happy to see you guys on here. Thanks for the great information in a fun format.
My Swiss army "card" is awesome and probably the only victorinox I'll ever need
I have a few good folding knives but I am thinking about buying a good fixed blade now. I’m looking for something versatile, reliable and resistant, with a decent sized blade but without being too bulky.
More to the point, considering the zombie apocalypse that is inevitably upon us, which fixed blade you’d recommend as an all-around survival tool, good for bushcraft, hunt, urban use and, naturally, defending oneself from the hordes of the undead?
Congratulations on the amazing channel. You are responsible for addicting me in perceiving what should be ordinary cutting tools as collectible works of art.
The CJRB Ruffian is a great wharncliffe/utility blade as well. I have bought three
I have a Victirinox "Locksmith" that was purchased in Switzerland and customized at the factory with my name/date of purchase, presented to me as a gift from my parents when they visited on vacation... it is my EDC since 2000.
The best knife is the one you have with you. That makes the Swiss army knives the best.
I argue, that unless you are in a trade of some sort, it’s the only one you need.
Another great video. As always, you two killed it. Thanks. I’m telling you, The Push Lock. 🎸🔪
We all know DCA is on his knife signing tour. 😊
I have got the small Swiss knife on my keychain as well. Most used knife I have on me.
I started my knife jearney with a classic sd and now I have a few of them. I have the classic on my car keys and I carry a hunter as a EDC. Yes the hunter does have tools I never use but a real SAK even one with little tools will be a great EDC. Especially when you with people that aren't into knives SAK doesn't intimidate them
A genuine Victorinox is a beautiful carry, I carry the officer Suice every day and its perfect for opening packaging and bottles every day.
call the compression lock the wedge lock
And Swiss Army Knives are legal pretty much anywhere you can carry a knife. No locking blades and short enough blades outside of a handful of models.
Thanks
I'd try one of Spyderco's SALT knives. They're supposed to be very good around water.
@@debbiej.2168 I have looked at them. I don’t necessarily love the way spyderco knives look. I don’t hate them either, but there are so many better looking knives out there and it would be nice to find one that offers the same level of utility with looks that I like.
0:24 LOL 😂🤣 That's exactly my humor!
SAK poor quality? Find something better for THE PRICE. Sorry, at the price range that Victorinox plays, it's quality reigns supreme.
I have heard the term "top liner lock" to refer to the compression lock.
Boker vs case? Who makes the best traditional knives??
I have a knife question!! How come so many premium knives most commonly come in frame locks? Why is there not as many newer lock styles in the + $200 price point?
36:20 it should be called Sideback lock
Seth: good call on the Delica. Your argument ticked all the boxes including samurai history. Now I need to go buy the k390 version....
It's a shame David wasn't there for this show cause you had a REAL reverse tanto...the CRKT Razelcliff......lol
Artisan Cutlery Sea Snake is the correct answer to the second question from leather worker.
Hey Thomas!!
Hey! --Thomas
Hi DCA and Thomas what is the difference between CPM-SPY27 and CPM-S90V steel.
Spy 26 has slightly more toughness and corrosion resistance but s90v has double the edge retention. Hope this helps
