Anthony Ray - I love that you brought up “the victim and student “line from hi ren. That is a line that so many people seem to have slept on. I find it to be very telling about how he can be so positive in the face of such adversity. He doesn’t look at himself as a victim. He is the student, and is choosing to learn how to live with his pain and illness.. He is really amazing.
On Deathnote a bit: Exactly what AnthonyRay said, Ryuk is a god of death and at one point leaves his death note lying about. A notebook where you can pen down a persons name and they would die, you could even be precise and note how and when they die. In the anime we also see Ryuk enjoying apples a lot, so the basket Ren is carrying could definitely be a nod to that. Anyway, the dude that finds the book, son of a cop, uses it initially to kill death row convicts, but ends up taking it too far. I will add to this, i do see some semblance with the anime Bleach, this is another anime about shinigami. And the monsters he's facing at the end combined with how Ren is dressed and his hair style could also be a nod to the Hollow, monsters that came from souls that didn't find rest, the shinigami have to fight and the main character also having bleached hair. So even in that it could be a double nod.
There's another Kubrick reference right at the beginning of that: he says "I'm shining, like Kubrick, my method is clockwork..." Kubrick directed The Shining along with Clockwork Orange and Full Metal Jacket ;)
Stanley Kubrick was 71 when he passed away. The references I picked up on here were to 1. Full metal jacket 2. A clockwork orange 3. Eyes wide shut He also directed The Shining, Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey and a few other "cult" classic films.
Wow, the Shinigami catch is amazing Mr Anthony Ray! Kudos to you. I've seen this video literally hundreds of times and never even thought of that, but you're spot on, it must be. Now you've got me looking at Death Note and Japanese folklore, goddam it! See you in about 4 hours! Glad you both enjoyed this, because this is one of my top 3 go-to songs (of anyone, not just Ren) - the mixture of lyrics and vocals is just beautiful. Can't believe it still has less than a million views.
all the Kubrick references in that one line: The Shining, Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut. You might even throw in Dr. Strangelove from the Atom Bomb mention in the lead up....like bro, chill Still, my favorite line is "My problems keep on peaking like the Everest, the elephant in the room is my room is in the elephant."
I don’t know if this is right but this is how I see it: The monster is his illness - always there in the background, following him. He tries to escape from it (drown) and then to ignore it (he’s not alone) but it’s always there. Perhaps when his soul ascends he sees it. And when he faces it, it brings him gifts (apples). He learns to use it.
True artists such as Ren know how to set a scene or pint a picture, please remember a picture is worth a thousand words, so while interpreting songs you are actually filling in the blanks with your perception more than his because unite obviously you know yourself better than you do Ren or any other artist/person that’s you’ve known
At the end, Ren has brought the darkness a basket of apples. I've always taken this to symbolise that he is "feeding his demons". It probably references everything from his illness to depression, medication, losses and general struggles with confidence and the like.
Also Ren colors his hair blond (sweet little lady video) for a yr or two. This video could be the time frame of him having his blond hair. So the animation guy was going to have cartoon Ren be blond as well.
This is one of your best reactions, to me. I liked your interpretations of the video by Ren. As a person who suffers chronic pain everyday, this particular song speaks to me, especially where he ascends & leaves his physical body. It’s emotional but empowering!
Lightbulb 💡 moment!!! “But there were victims and there were students.” This never felt complete to me as a statement- until today!! Thanks AR. And BP - the Heroes Journey…. I see it !! Loved this reaction. ❤ from London 🇬🇧
This and Diazepam are my favourite Ren tracks. Easy. The Kubrick scheme is brilliant. "I'm shining like Kubrick, My method is clockwork, A full metal dude with, His eyes on the prize, Do you obey? Do you abide?" You caught Full Metal Jacket and A Clockwork Orange. It also references The Shining and possibly a very loose reference to Eyes Wide Shut - it's likely a reach on my part but he only uses one word to reference A Clockwork Orange so it's possible for Eyes Wide Shut too. 😅
Your Hero's Story analogy is in a ton of his music, His transition from darkness to strength, "Power" is an obvious one, "Genesis" is more covert, so I'm gonna break it down fully. It's gonna be a book, but i'll skip the more obvious or less important points. It's worth it, trust. it's his Origin Story. Right from the top he tells you the gist. The very first bar translated: When he's alone, he fights his demons, his mental and physical troubles have enriched his soul, he's top shelf now. Then the story begins, starting with his woes, his "cake without icing", we all get this part so jump to the chorus and you find the biggest clue. He's lying when he says "imma give it strait to you now". He motions to his eyes and says: "pupils dilate in the dark", but that whole sentence is a homonym, what he really means is "Students grow from conflict". Your Hero's Story. Jump to Noah, the guy that ignored God's message. Who was told about the flood before hand, "was late to the ark" because he didn't start building it until after it started raining. The savior of all life on earth, never reached his purpose until he was forced to face his peril. "Rain and rain at the start" is a double, sure, Noah, but also to the next line, "Pain in the art", Ever heard the saying "All great artist are destined to suffer"? The suffering, rain and pain, is the prefix to great art. Then he goads the universe to "aim for the heart", extending his arms to invite the shot. This is where his transition starts. Even the background production follows the story, starts with prison doors opening and closing between the first two beat drops, when he's talking about his woes. Then later when he repeats the (a new) beginning, after he begins his change, he talks about fighting his demons, going all the way to the gates of hell to do so, *he's* pursuing *them*. All this is accompanied by that production again, during the fighting you have the tense sounds and grunting, but then we have that uplifting sound as he begins to cross the street (!), "It's pain making my pain wake". By the time he reaches the other side of the street, he's transitioned fully, "It's such a sight to behold". Now he's got the power, now he's got the "gun", the whole Shaq bit is him displaying that power. Then he starts summing it up. "Time is the order, the lesson." "a curse, *and* a blessing"(!). He's saying it's how you look at it, it's "confined in [your] mind", he understands that he would have never reached his power without his genesis, his pain. He's who he is because of it, he's made peace with it. "take my piece of the pie, and then feed and unwind" He's taking his "cake", and he's eating it too, in peace.
One of my favorite and very underreacted to works of Ren. The lyricism is cool and the musicality is amazing. It's a very yin yang vibe, which even is shown in the black and white theme of the video. I won't pretend to understand all of it, but I get the overall arc of the thing. Very very cool. One of his best works.
He can't beat his demons they will always be there and follow him. So Ren comes to a realization that it is less painful physically and mentally to share with his demons and except they will always be there instead of fighting them. The demon could not grab the apple, it needed help, Ren was going to help by sharing.
@@NobleLeather im not sure 🤷♀ its was not really a finished thing, but it would be pretty dope if he put a full version out there. Hopefully he will.
I love AR's jacket. How interesting you both are when you review Ren together...from the Hero's Journey to Ascension to Shinigami, I've come to expect the unexpected from you two.
“Shakespeare re-enacted, adapted for music, it’s too sick” only Ren could do this line then smash a Kubrick scheme, I’m pretty sure Ren will move into film directing

Im going to miss you guys together, i love this song so much and you have both got really deep into it, i think your both right, we all interpret Rens songs to our own situations which is what music and art are all about ❤ to you both
It's amazing how we all know how he felt at the time he wrote these songs. But now we are seeing his transformation. I've never been inspired by a singer songwriter since Marvin Gaye who sang about real things....amazed.
Finally, I have been waiting for this moment for so long 😊awesome 🎶 it seems that you missed the part in the video where he goes Sahagin and becomes blonde.
Mad respect for catching Death Note reference Anthony. I loved that show, but it was so long ago even i didn't catch that. You guys are great, whish you all the best!🖖
Heretic will always be in my top 5 of Ren songs, and it hits me harder with each listen. What BP said about the hero's journey was also pretty astute and amazing, a great take on why Ren and his music affect us so deeply.
BP, you're right on target about people with chronic illnesses latching on to Ren. I've had lupus for longer than I was healthy, and a lot of Ren's lyrics and sometimes just the sound of his music really clicks with me.
As always his art is what you what it to be. Agree the theme in Ren's music is light and dark ... In every song. So you can latch onto light or dark depending on how you feel when you listen and watch it
While Ren is brilliant I think we have to give credit where credit is due to Black Pegasus & Anthony Ray for their ability to tease apart the lyrics & music. Kudos to you both
