    I bought a UD-1200 in mid 2019. It has been my main iron since then. I have no complaints, even the Jabe branded tips are still working fine after all this time. My unit has nearly 700 hours on it of total uptime, which thanks to the counters I can verify. What I really love about this unit is that instant setback. Appreciate the teardown

    Check the "brass" wool on this, some people have reported that it's coated steel wool so it'll quickly damage any tips.

      Ok, thanks for the tip… no pun intended.

    Looking forward to the switch relocation already. If you're handy with working with wood you could make a stand out of ply to tilt it slightly which would help with airflow on the bottom if the base isn't a solid piece.

    These stations can take both T210 and T245 handles, so perhaps that's what the 10 and 45 markings refer to. T210 are smaller, lower-power tips for tighter work, but most hobbyists prefer the T245 tips for their power.

    • @TheDefpom
      @TheDefpom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I believe you are correct about the 10/45. I was looking at the smaller hands piece too, wondering it I should get one for soldering tiny parts, there is also a T12 type which was tempting as I have a load of tips.

    Well the JBC spares you the annoying fun noise, got enough things in my lab that make noise already. And for the price I might as well get the original ( already do ).
    JBC recently launched a new station at that range, so older looking alike stations might be on offer for quite some time now. Definitely worth the extra buck at this product line.

    • @TheDefpom
      @TheDefpom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheDefpom to tell you the truth, personally, I find the many JBC-pencil homemade style stations much more honest when you want to cut corners. Buy the pencil and tips original and don´t pay so much for the station. At least in my country a PID controller is your average bachelor thesis for technical universities, so it should not be an issue to assemble and tune a kit.

    My JBC has the power switch on the back also, but I don't mind it......I set the sleep temperature down to 20degC so it's basically off.

    • @TheDefpom
      @TheDefpom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have it set to 100 now, it heats up in a few seconds so it’s not really an issue having it set very low.

  • @MrDubje
    @MrDubje 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good review! For a JBC knock-off it looks to be well-build. The display and English language could be improved. JBC has the power switch on the back, too. JBC's (the digital ones) also have a hibernation mode which activates after, I think, 30 minutes or so, effectively turning all power off. For that reason the power switch is less of an issue with them, I think.
    Looks like they cloned the PIN option as well. The green plastic on the handle seems to be the same as JBC, the soft grip is optional but commonly preferred when soldering in a production line or for a long time in general.
    I'm half curious about the Chinese knock-off tips for the 2245 (T245) handle, but I'm not willing to risk shorting out and destroying my JBC station with a Chinese tip that most likely had a questionable quality control, if any.

    • @TheDefpom
      @TheDefpom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The language appears to be exactly what is used in the JBC (at least from what I saw in a manual I downloaded), the display could be better, but all else considered this is an excellent station, It is also sold as the Best BST-933.

  • @antibrevity
    @antibrevity 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oddly, Chinese manufacturers are apparently only cloning the three T245 tips included with this station, as I can find no others. None of these are my preferred types. Considering that a full range of generic T12 tips are available for $2-3 apiece, I find it surprising that they aren't yet cloning more JBC tips at higher prices.

      @TheDefpom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've having a conversation with the seller where I got my unit about the firmware. He's been in touch with the Jabe factory. The factory claimed there is no V3.02.02 firmware for the UD-1200, only for the UD-210. I told the seller that this is incorrect as you apparently have this firmware installed in your UD-1200 and pointed to this video. Where exactly (which seller) did you get yours? Might help if I can point to it. My seller is currently waiting to get in touch with the head of the factory, hopefully something can be worked out this way.

    Hi! Is there any way you can extract the firmware on your unit and share it? Mine has 2020/01/03 SD-V3.02.01 and lacks the option to enable three temperature presets. Would be great if I could update the firmware, but I can't find it anywhere.

      Unless the controller chip is locked, one should be able to read out the flash using a programming device. Would need to find out where to connect it, though. I'll have a look at mine. I also have the older firmware.

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheDefpom You've got an unpopulated pin header on the board. Holding it with the square marked pin on the lower left, you've got these pins:
      Lower row: 1=VDD, 2=JNRST, 3=TDI, 4=SWDIO, 5=SWDCLK, 6=VSS (through a 10k resistor), 7=TDO, 8=NRST (through a 1K resistor), 9=?, 10=?
      Upper row: 1: VDD, 2-10: VSS
      I only needed VSS, VDD (3.3v), SWDIO and SWDCLK to communicate with the chip. It's an STM32103 RBT6. Sadly readout protected, but this could still be useful if a custom firmware or an official upgrade is released in the future.

    "You're never going to use a 1-degree change in temperature."
    Yes, it's ridiculous that Chinese manufacturers do this and even more insane if they don't at least offer a menu for changing the adjustment step. This unit would be 5X easier to use if it simply adjusted in 5-degree steps ;). It wouldn't even need velocity control if it offered 5 or 10-degree stepping.

    • @TheDefpom

      It just needed a menu option for the step size, that one improvement would have made such a difference.

      Yes, numerous failures. This is a clone of a previous JBC Compact model, so the basic design was done by JBC, though the genuine LCD likely has a better viewing angle. The button response is a software thing and I'm unsure of how the comparable JBC model behaved, but undoubtedly far better than this.
      www.jbctools.com/cd-1be-soldering-station-for-general-purposes-product-1123.html#composition
      This series has now been replaced, but the physical design is largely unchanged. The Compact series is designed for placement at hand-height on the bench and thus viewed from above. JBC's Modular series has a front-facing, but still angled, display with a separate tool holder for bench placement.
