Northern Dancer was only 15.2 hh.
His dams sire Native Dancer was 16.3
Its not the size of the horse in the race but the size of the race in the horse.

@@impunitythebagpuss Nijinsky, The Minstrel, Dance Smartly, just a few more that have done Canada proud.
But Northern Dancer has spread his blood, talent and heart to a huge percentage of all North American Thoroughbreds.
You guys should be proud. He was one of the all time greats.
I still can't fathom that he went to post 18 times. He won 14 (other than his debut Maiden Allowance, all Stakes Company), never finished out of the money, with (2) place finishes, and (2) shows...and his LTE was only $580,600. Which was a huge amount of money in the 60's, but he would have been a millionaire several times over by today's standards and purse structure, his KY Derby win alone.
Yes, Northern Dancer was a great champion. Canadians should be proud to call him there own!!

How much you want to bet he was a twin? And from the description of his sire & dam they might have been too ... my twins were born normal size Foals.... old Dr Proctor came and told me that twins are born with larger hearts and larger lung size and I can attest to that when I started training them for the races but no matter what they bred him to he produced the champion.... how much you want to bet he didn't pass on a larger heart and a larger lung size???
