When water overtakes a prison mine, the convicts within plot their escape. Now, the warden is sending guests out in boats to help wrangle them. Let me say first that using a flood as the framing device for a boat ride is ingenious.
The Flooded Mine originally opened in 1968, and to see a ride of any kind last that long is an impressive feat. Even decades ago, the park's dedication to theming was second-to-none, putting real antique mining equipment into the hands of their animatronic prisoners. Though this ride did get refurbished in the 1990s, adding an interactive shooting element, and had some effects added or restored as recently as 2019, most of the figures and scenes appear not to have been updated since their first installation. That's not a bad thing, though, as the ride itself is flooding with not just water, but vintage charm. Like Fire in the Hole, the Flooded Mine was also built in-house. With countless older rides being replaced rather than refurbished, and those newer rides coming from bigger, specialized companies rather than a park's own resources, rides like Flooded Mine are becoming scarcer by the day. The work that Silver Dollar City has put into creating, then keeping this gem open and maintained over the years should be celebrated.
