- A week off did nothing to temper Lewis’s anger or his sense that history has folded in on itself.
Twenty years of US intervention in an Asian nation and it all ends in an ill-planned fleeing on overcrowded flights. Kabul in 2021 or Saigon in 1975, either way the images of departing Americans should forever dispel any further imperialist notions. Your host has himself visited Afghanistan, having performed there on two USO tours. From his observations from flying over the country, it was obvious from the haphazard nature of the terrain that the country could never be conquered. So here we are, unable to get our act together to defeat enemies foreign or domestic or viral, each attempt at a solution confounded by our own idiocy and delusional sense of self-worth. While the Taliban overwhelms the Afghan forces, COVID continues its resurgent march through the unvaccinated. America leadership seems to be defined by a hubristic inability or unwillingness to accurately assess any problem beyond what the personal political consequences might be. How else to explain certain governors stopping local schools from having mask mandates? These leaders look only to their own political advantage and criminally refuse to comprehend that their job is first and foremost to protect those who are unable to protect themselves. Instead they are willing to gamble the lives of children to make a nebulous virtue-signaling point about “freedom”. What about the freedom to not get COVID? The vaccination situation has become so ridiculous that some people in Missouri are wearing disguises when they go to get vaccinated. So, there’s freedom for those who won’t wear a mask or won’t get vaccinated, but not for those who choose to get vaccinated. But, it’s not all bad news on the vaccination front, some dominatrices are demanding that their submissives get vaccinated. Whatever it takes.
From one end of the English-speaking world to the other, Lewis’ global reach persists as this week we have a Kiwi’s perspective of American politics likening it to the death rattle of a failed state, some fan appreciation from down under, and from north of the border, a discursive deconstruction of how Canadian politics isn’t so much better than American politics, they just do it in a quieter fashion. We have several perspectives on vaccination and the pandemic, and from Texas, a local’s view of Gov. Greg Abbott’s destructive antebellum governing strategy. Plus, what’s up with all the shopping cart traffic jams in the aisles of Sam’s Club?

Heck, many people in this country don’t have any knowledge of the Soviet’s being in Afghanistan. Nor do they realize the US helped the Afghans with weapons. Now they have even more of our weapons. My heart aches for those who helped us and being dropped like a sack of trash. We never learn the lessons of the past. Short attention span and magical thinking.

Yes I do unfortunately it was 17 years when I started laughing.... It's got to be pretty obvious whatever they found it helped them figure everything out about the atom and so forth the gateway to it is most likely in Afghanistan... There's been no true accounting of the resources that the most developed countries in the world have been sending their for going on 50 years now.... It's just a hunch but I think area 51 is really Afghanistan.

Working at Sam's Club is a fate worse than death. I don't think I've ever been happier than the day I was fired.
I know what you mean. I was laid off from a horrible paralegal job in 2009, and it was the best day of my life.
I take that back -- when I subsequently applied for unemployment, my so-called "employer" contested my application, saying that I was actually "fired", not laid off. But he didn't have a paper trail to establish this, so I was approved. THAT was the best day!

What is a bit sad is I've traveled from state to state, city to city and have enjoyed my time as per usual for the past 18 or so months and haven't even had a sniffle. Neither have the overwhelming majority of my family members and friends that have done the same and those few that have caught this thing have beat it up. That includes a 68 year old woman with diabetes and not the greatest record of health. High school sporting events, buffets, in store shopping...the list goes on and on. You've hidden yourself from life. Why would you even get vaccinated? It doesn't sound like it's given you any peace of mind whatsoever. Nothing is "raging out of control" other than the fear mongering media and those that wish to control you. I understand people being cautious, I certainly HAVE NOT BEEN overly cautious but I don't blame those that are, I just don't understand people like you that have let this whole fiasco ruin your daily lives and pursuit of happiness. Time is precious and it waits for nobody, it's the one thing in this world you can never retrieve. Hope your life gets back to normal sooner rather than later but that is up to you.
@@jd9708 I’m enjoying my time off greatly. I currently earn my $$$ from home & can’t really stand most people anywhoo 😂. Prior to this crap I was running lab samples & other items for my logistics company & was constantly stressed out & cursing traffic so badly even Lewis would probably be proud lol. The labs I began running at the start of this mess - already COVID-positive. Sometimes over 150 of them per run. They were being sent to other labs for further testing after the initial positive results. I had clearance for back halls the general public don’t have access to at major hospitals from Galveston to The Woodlands, including the Houston Medical Center - & I saw bodies, LOTS of them. All straight out of COVID quarantine & wi less than 3 feet of me. Not to mention the positive patients still being checked out in the ERs. So many I couldn’t wear my body cam all of a sudden per new Harris Health rules even though I’d been wearing it for months for personal security by that point. Plus I’m immuno-compromised on top of that. SO, anyway, just bc I’m only going out once a week or so doesn’t mean I’ve been idle - I’ve been taking multiple classes a day, getting my new place spruced up plus making & executing plans for a NEW business. And just last week I was informed, even w all my precautions, I was STILL exposed to that crap by an unvaccinated family member 🙄 Luckily tho - I’m vaxxed & I still mask - bc the absolute idiocy is at an all-time high down here 🤦♀️. When I was a child, almost seventy years ago, my Mother, a teacher, complained about parents expecting public schools to rear their children. That was then, this is now, and it's gotten even worse!
So true, but the schools also have ridiculous requirements for children, specifically teenagers. If you are a bully, nothing happens, if you are being bullied and stick up for yourself, you get suspended or expelled. Girls are not allowed to wear a tank top because it disrupts the boys and their education. What about the girls, I don’t see them rushing to keep boys from harassing the girls. So I don’t believe the schools are doing any better.
Don’t forget about the discrimination in many schools against female students, lgbtq 🏳️🌈, and minorities. The schools should be doing a better job, specifically administrators, and teachers. I’ve had many who didn’t give a crap, because they were there just for the pay check, they are the ones complaining about being babysitters. Do your job, or leave!

I’m sorry you couldn’t celebrate your Mom’s birthday. Our mother celebrated her 100th just this past Saturday morning with her family outside of her LTC facility. The weather played nice, all family members were fully vaccinated and still wore their masks, we social distanced and had our temperatures taken as well. My Mom won’t remember but in the moment we brought joy. Please wish her a Happy Birthday from Canada.❤️❤️❤️❤️🇨🇦

Thanks for the many comments. As an immigrant that became an engineer. A former military, only because of my parents inability to get me to get my EE degree. Crying to the world gives me hope that someone still finds the time to stand up. My degree has never given me a platform.

How about the Haitians? Haiti is the poorest nation in the world and now with all the devastation from the hurricanes, the US government is deporting Haitians back to Haiti! What the hell are they going back too? Why are the Haitians so discriminated against? US policies need to change with dealing with Haiti. If the US government can deport Afghanistans to America, then the US government can bring Haitians to America.

Notice how in Lewis's assessment of Afghanistan he points out that the Taliban was obviously always going to regain control, compares it to Vietnam, laments the incompetency of the military during this withdrawal, all to argue that we should stay.

I spoke of herd immunity because my fear is the speed of mutation / adaptation of the virus.
I am a veteran. I got the shots in the spring. I was speculating on the presumption that masking is effective. By that I meant to say the cloth masks are 20% effective while the M-95 is 95% effective in containing atomized spit. Rebreathing our own outgas is likely to induce some respiratory issues, but alive beats not. I thought a Norwegian country did the herd immunity thing. Not sure how it turned out. I guess the grisy metric would be total deaths per capita after correcting for general health of the populations. My guess is the only correlation of significance will be the initial condition: which population was healthy to start is likely to remain. The earth consumes unhealthy populations, individually or collectively. This is a shaking off of the unfit; firstly in the mind- if the shot sounds evil, you are short for this world. Then the severely compromised, then the necessitous those who must go into danger to put food on the table. This is going to shake out some of the greedy; it will be for the rest to demand the rich say greed did this. Fearing the rich will doom the planet.
You are the 1st in the media to say exactly what I have been thinking. They should have started evacuating people some time before without alerting the Taliban. I also see that Trump and Pompeo negotiated with the Taliban without the Afghany government. Obviously, they were negotiating with terrorists which is a 'don't do' for very good reasons.

Lewis, I am so glad that your mom is still alive and that you plan on visiting her for her birthday. My Uncle has no kids and he is 89 and very dear to me. I know what you mean about their mind being in and out, good days and not so good days. We are all fully vaccinated here, living in NJ. My husband and I mask up whenever we are indoors, other than at home. Your rants are wonderful. We cannot thank you enough!
