    Such a wonderful opera and distinguished cast. The cherry on the cake was having a Henry VIII, James Morris, who actually resembled the historical king. This superb dramatic bass-baritone continues to perform at the Metropolitan Opera with distinction after 55 years. Perhaps there'll be 55 more. 👏

      and bad conducting by her husband , he was not conducting simply "beating the beat"

  • @AllenFigueredo5
    @AllenFigueredo5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think she struggled because of her age, she wasn't a young woman when she tucked this role. However my favorite soprano in this role is Leyla Gencer.

    • @spyridonroumeliotis7831
      @spyridonroumeliotis7831 ปีที่แล้ว

      No offense, but why ? And what does age have to do with tackling Bolena? It only has to do with the way the voice evolves through time and finding the right time point to tackle the role. Aging does not necessarily mark vocal decline. A great example of that was Gruberova (also as a voice who refuted limits of time), who debuted the role when she was at the top of her game with a voice entirely capable of supporting the role’s vast range and demands. That being said. It was indeed a bit late for Sutherland but this has less to do with her age or irreversible vocal deterioration but because after almost 30 years of absolute devotion to belcanto, it was becoming more and more difficult for her to train and sustain her voice (as she had stated herself in various occasions). And yet, her Bolena remains excellent. Perhaps not exceptional as she was evidently not as her earlier self but still, there are moments of greatness there. And just to put it out there, under no circumstances Gencer’s sloppy unbelcantissimo Bolena comes anywhere near Sutherland’s. But of course everything is a matter of personal taste and there is no judgment on that.

      @@ransomcoates546 I claim to be no expert, but this is not La Stupenda Dame Joan at her best. This does not seem like the well, La Stupenda I love. She is close to 60 here and the heavy repertory of "Lucias" has taken its' toll. She loved to sing but unlike Callas didn't live for it so I wished she had maybe retired sooner? Even so, retirement was a few years away for her, and here is where one can argue she should have. On the other hand, she gave so much beautiful music to the world, so one can hardly begrudge her for sounding ordinary, and her ordinary is still better than many younger, popular singers of today.

    No era su día, pero ya quisieran muchas sopranos cuarto y mitad de su técnica. Se despista en las entradas, a veces suena pelín calante, el grave está en la ruina, pero bueno, quien tuvo, retuvo. El fraseo nunca lo tuvo y tampoco era Sarah Bernhardt..., eso sí. El triino hacia el minuto 3 es espectacular.

      Parece que el publico no comparte mucho tu opinión, lo digo por los aplausos y ovaciones que brindan a Sutherland, por supuesto hay que deducir que son una panda de paletos sin conocimientos de musica en general y opera en particular que habran acudido al teatro equivocados o por aparentar. Lo miso es que valoran de forma distinta y ven a la soprano lirica de coloratura más importante del siglo XX aun conservar suficiente calidad con casi 60 años. Otros tiquismiquis y pedantes siempre estan dispuestos a poner un pero para asi demostrar sus grandes conocimientos.

      Six ascending trills on a single breath! She's way past her prime and still nails the trills. They dont sound well because the voice has lost its youth and vibrancy. However, they are there, technically flawless. And the unwritten sustained trill at the end is gorgeous imho.

      I love Maria but by her late 40s only the most devoted fans would have wanted to listen to her sing because her voice had really gone downhill so much. Here is Joan Sutherland at almost 60 packing in the house and everybody going crazy. If Maria was still alive in her sixties she would have never been able to still sing this. Also is wonderful as her recording is of this opera she doesn't take any of the high notes that Joan Sutherland does and they still sound just spectacular

      Her recording is great but Sutherland was much older and she was taking high D's all over the place which Callas avoided. Yes Callas is great drama, but Sutherland's vocal fireworks excelled Callas's here and she was quite a lot older. That is fine for me.
