  • There are a few different ways to tell if your figs are ripe and ready to pick. You want to watch out for other animals trying to take your precious fruits and pick your figs at the right time. I'll share my 3 methods to testing your figs for ripeness and make sure you get the most out of your fig tree crop.

Not only in Texas, also here near Naples, Southern Italy, they rush up my fig tree's branches. I've loved figs since I was a child, as they also were the symbol of my grandparents' house, so plenty of memories attached to them.
Anyway, I don't cut the top of the fig, I just "engrave" a cross on the skin in the part that drips that sap (we call it fig milk in Italian) and peel it. Or when you're hungry and harvesting figs under the tree, I just shove them in my mouth as they are. I think they truly are one of God's gift to the Mediterranean countries

It's beautiful that they are the symbol of your grandparents house 💙 For me, I think of wild raspberries.
When I'm eating figs from the tree, I just hold the stem and eat up to my fingers 😁 But that's if I get lucky and squirrels or birds didn't get it first.

@@FaewoodAcres Yeah, here squirrels aren't exactly a problem as they are found high up in the mountains inland. Maybe the Med climate isn't for them.
Berries aren't that popular in Italy, but I love them so I can totally see why you're so fond of them. Greetings

Thanks for the fig info. I've often wanted a few apple trees, but the fallen rotting apples attract too many yellow jackets, so I always talk myself out of it.

      Here's one way around it.
Instead of a few apple trees, just get one. They sell apple trees with multiple varieties on the same tree. So you get different flavors of apples. Or you can try it yourself by grafting. Then, just keep the tree small (pruning) and don't let it produce too many apples by pulling off at least half before they grow too big. Then you'll be too busy eating them for them to fall off and rot. 😁
