      Thank you!! I have trees in all of my paintings, except the one behind me in most videos (not this one, but I painted it, so I say the green is trees, haha)

    My cookbooks are allowed to fill the single shelf above the stove. Container. I need to repack it now that I know which of the Christmas ones are worth keeping vs. just taking a couple of pictures!

    In Australia I recommend you buy a Kobo ereader. That way you can borrow books from the library and save money. Kindle has some licensing agreements which prevents libraries from using it, or so I’m told.

    I like organizing smaller books on one shelf by color but I’ve gotten to where I don’t really have enough for it to look good. I love my kindle paperwhite for so many reasons - ease of use in bed after dark, for travel, the one I have holds a charge for ages (about a month), I can borrow library books, highlight notes, look up unfamiliar words, and change the type size to suit whether I’m wearing glasses or not. Still love books, but they’re often awkward or heavy to hold or have difficult to read typefaces.

      I wonder if there was enough to organize in sections of blues, whites, etc...Yes, LOVE kindle!

    Great video , bring a 'visual person' I like the tip about organizing the cookbooks by color when they're out in the open for anyone to see :) also the tip about taking a picture of a favorite recipe in the cookbook and then donating the cookbook. I don't think I've ever purchased one that had more than five recipes that interested me. After seeing your recipe book from your great grandmother has made me want to try some recipes from family members also knowing that they made them and now I can is pulling at the heart strings , a bond even if they are no longer with us😍

      That's great Val! Yes, that cook book is super cool that my family compiled. I also don't see the point of keeping a cookbook where I use barely any (or no) recipes!

    I got rid of almost all my cookbooks a year ago. I have 3 regular cookbooks, a binder of printed out favourites, and 2 canning books. I have found that’s all I need, I don’t miss all the others at all!

    i love a paper book for the feel and for the convenience of getting on a bus and not worrying about the charege but i also love my kindle as i can find rare books. recentlly i relized i had too many books so my compromise is that i get most of my paper books from a charity shop or from the library and when done if i like the book i will download a sample on my kindle if its available that way i have a record of what i read and will be able to see if there is a sequel then i get rid of the book so it doesnt cause clutter. using this method i have gotten rid of 4 large boxes of books i have kept a few well loved series and thats all

    • @MinimalistHome

      I totally agree! Books are amazing, but sometimes I just need the content!

  • @pwatkins2764

    I love the kindle. Recently it automatically puts books in a series together.
    Cook books are gradually disappearing. I made a cookbook of my own. It contains my favorites from different cookbooks. Copy and insert into 3 ring binder. I do laminate to prevent spills and such damage.
    You have motivated me to go through my remaining cookbooks. Use it or lose it has become a motto around my home.

      I did the same thing with consolidating my recipes into one cookbook of my own. I have it as a word file and import if I find a new recipe I love. I LOVE that I can just open the binder and every single thing in it is recipes we love and make regularly. I had a recipe box of handwritten recipes from my mom that I didn't want to get rid of so I put a document pocket in the front and tucked them in there and I actually ended up using those recipes for the first time in years, and use them regularly now, as well. I think of her every time I see one and it just makes me happy. Got rid of all but two other cookbooks - so freeing!

    Never been able to take tot he Kindle I'm afraid. I am currently decluttering my books and will donate a lot to my local charity shops. I read at least two books a week so thought the Kindle would be a god send, however, I just don't like reading on them. I love the feel, look and smell of books so although I am decluttering mine I will be keeping quite a few. I also don't like ornaments hanging around collecting dust so like my books for décor. I did colour code them about three or four years ago but once I declutter this time I am going back to theme and author organisation rather than colour x

    • @MinimalistHome
      @MinimalistHome  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely do what works for you. I would find the author thing very helpful for non-cookbook books, but I'm a sucker for the colours now

  • @purelyloveable

    Yes the kindle! I’m not a huge reader but got one anyway, i decluttered the physical books that I could get on kindle and made a wishlist of the ones I was sure I wanted to read again. It has been over a year and I have yet to miss any physical books OR purchase any that I was sure I was going to read again. 10/10 do recommend

    I used to have quite a few cookbooks as well, but as I aged and had to eliminate certain foods because of sensitivities or health reasons, I was finding that I wasn't using the multitude of cookbooks I owned. I gave many of them to charity. What I kept are a couple from my Mother's side, a 1906 cookbook which explains the nitty gritty, such as how to make marshmallows (instead of buying them off the shelf), and a 1950's cookbook, a 1970's Betty Crocker cookbook which was well used by me, one for preserving garden produce, and a few spiral bound ones from churches. I mostly refer to a compilation of recipe cards I have kept over the years, but even those are bursting at the seams, so I need to declutter my recipe cards as well. That may be a good winter project.

    I just got a kindle for Christmas! Now if only I could bear to get rid of some of the six bookcases full of books we have... Why is it so hard?! 😬

    Love your books sorted by colour! I recently did that with our board games after watching home edit and it’s amazing how nice it is to the eye and easy to find things! 😍 I recently started using kindle on my iPad and then our local library has a digital book app so I can even read for free! I was hesitant too but now I am so glad cause I can read a book without worrying about spending a lot of money and then not knowing what to do it with it afterwards cause I really don’t read books twice ☺️🙌

    I love cookbooks!! But I only find a handful of recipes per book. I've started zeroxing the pages I use, keep them in a binder, and donating the book. I've pared down to only 7 physical cookbooks and a 2 inch binder of the recipes I've culled from over 60 cookbooks that were cluttering my house. Now if I want a cookbook I borrow it from my local library and even submit purchase requests for them to get new cookbooks I'm interested in.

    • @MinimalistHome
      @MinimalistHome  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did you know you can scan those cookbook pages using your notes app on your iPhone? It makes a much cleaner and more unified finished product than the photo option. Then you can also send the pdf to your various boards.

    I wouldn't necessarily call them "cookbooks" persay, but The Herbal Kitchen and An Everlasting Meal have probably been the most valuable and useful books for cooking that I've bought. Kami McBride and Tamar Adler are the authors. Besides those, I have only have 2-3 canning books and a copy of the 2006 edition of The Joy of Cooking.
    I've really gotten strict about books in the last year or two and my husband and I just donated 10 boxes of books a couple of weeks ago. Now I pretty much only buy physical books that I think are useful, legitimately bring me joy (ie books that I loved as a child, classic literature, etc), and that I'm *willing* to give space to on my bookshelves. Little House on the Prairie and Anne of Green Gables pretty much have their own shelf. 🤣 The rest of the time I either check books out from the Library or buy on my kindle.

      @@MinimalistHome The extra effort getting down to the bottom shelf might stop me from putting the cookbooks away, that's what I thought would be frustrating. I really enjoy reading through cookbooks.

    We got Kindles when the libraries were closed. We used them a lot last spring/summer, but my main problem is that a child will open a book and inadvertently turn the page or change the chapter and it’s so disorienting! I would like to use it more but I try to get it from the library or just buy the book and pass it on!
