A NEW WAY OF AQUASCAPING LARGE AQUARIUMS WITH DRYROCK

- Epoxy sticks and superglue are not necessarily the best choice when aquascaping larger aquariums. This video details the use of thickened 2 part BoteCote Epoxy , and polyurethane spray foam, to fix dry rocks in place.

Love your shed and tanks. We need more folks like you in our aquarium community to spread knowledge and ideas.
Very kind Carl. I do feel that especially the reef hobby is stuck in the mud, so to speak. Obsession with smart testers and the latest generation Radion, isn’t exactly fostering new ideas in reef display , reef biotopes, fish breeding advances and extending new ground in captive husbandry. Still, who am I to tell someone how to enjoy their hobby!!
Always excited to see your massive plywood tanks!
It's a great experience building this tank, but geez I'm starting to look forward to getting it finished! Thanks for your feedback
Hey, can I ask out of interest for myself, what sort of aquariums you keep? Just trying to get an idea if I have more salt, fresh, reef, turtle etc viewers!
Wonderful job! Looking forward to the native tank! We need a Gobie update too!😁
Thanks. I’m editing the first part of the turtle tank update now, and should have it out early in the week.
It's looking really good Adam! as everyone else I'm really looking forward to seeing it finished but with a job like this the best thing is patience, take your time and think about it, a lot of people will race in and then be upset when it's to late to change, the waterline and floating corals look really good and you have seemed to overcome the dead spots with the pipe, you have now created another habitat around the island for invertebrates and algae around the island that should look really cool when established along the waterline, Great job!
Cheers Jason
So cool! Thanks so much for making large tanks that are attractive.
Yep. As I said in the video previous, plywood aquariums are generally big and cumbersome. I think a fresh take on them is warranted. Thanks for your support.
It’s going to be amazing when you’re finished 😊
The waterline expanding foam turned out pretty good there Adam. Love the DIY drill press guide jig thingy. Looking forward to seeing how the turtle tank is coming along.
Gil
That’s the technical term! Now I’ll give you permission to borrow the idea, but I want all the credit!
Must be a NSW term. When I asked the guy at Bunnings to point me in the direction of the drill press guide jig thingy's, he looked at me like I was speaking Chinese!
@Gilsfishroom first mistake… you asked for help at Bunnings!
Love this build. The spray foam method is also very popular for dart frog setups. It’s great stuff
Yes I’ve seen a number of amazing green wall/ paludarium set ups which used it. They look beautiful
I cannot wait to see the final but i really enjoy watching you build. Im excited to see the glass being installed. I have mostly freshwater tanks but i have 3 brackish tanks. My biggest 75 gallon brackish is my marine estuary that im slowly going to make full marine. I have red and green scatts mono angel's ball mollys and figure 8 puffers. Its probably one of my favorites out of 20 aquariums.
Wow
Not sure I could handle the maintenance on 20 display tanks. I used to breed rainbows, but those tanks weren’t pretty!
It’s interesting to me that most of my viewers are ‘unconventional’ fish keepers - multiple tanks, brackish , plywood monster fish keepers. I don’t seem to attract the single reef tank viewer.
@@australianaquarist im definitely sick with is lol. It can be work but I love it. Most of my tanks are planted and have a good balance of fish and snails and not much needs to be done to keep them healthy. I plan on doing a saltwater pond this summer with native fish I can collect here in Jacksonville. A costal flats concept
Mate I've thought of converting one of my outdoor ponds into salt, to try and breed Bluespotted Maskrays. Checkout the videos of Julian Springs outdoor pond on TH-cam. The heat management is the thing that most concerns me though.
I love every part of this wait for your videos to drop. Can't wait to see the finished product.
Myself also!! Its a great experience building this tank, but I'm starting to get impatient now!
Hey, can I ask out of interest for myself, what sort of aquariums you keep? Just trying to get an idea if I have more salt, fresh, reef, turtle etc viewers!
@australianaquarist I'm a reefer mate, but I appreciate all your tanks.
This is beginning to look really really nice
Thanks Gudbjarten. I'm pretty happy with the way it's turning out. I think the painted background is now looking good against the rock work
Hey, can I ask out of interest for myself, what sort of aquariums you keep? Just trying to get an idea if I have more salt, fresh, reef, turtle etc viewers!
I have a planted freshwater aquarium.
Would really like to do salt at some point, both reef and some brackish with fish local to me ( I'm from a small island in Denmark).
But for now I just don't have the time or money to get started with those.
Maybe when the kids leave home at some point 😅
Ahh , the kids. They do drain time, money and emotional energy, that's for sure. Ive got one leaving for Europe in 4 weeks, one starting a traineeship in cranes, and one in his last year of high school. So as a planted freshwater guy, may I ask why you watch this kind of TH-cam content. Trust me, I'm very pleased to have you in my community, but just trying to learn a bit more about my audience.
@@australianaquarist
Sounds like they are doing well. My girls are 12 and 6. So it will be a few years before anything happens on that front. Luckyly they are awesome kids and I would rather have them then big aquariums...most days anyway 😅
And the aquarium we have is becoming a bit of a family project.
It was originally your turtle tank that got me into your channel. I really love turtles and would love to build something big like that at some point down the line.
I think it's a combination of your personality and fascination with the big build project that made me keep watching 🙂
glad to see we're back with the original channel logo
Just learning about personal branding with VidIQ today. Out of interest, why do you prefer a photo rather than a logo?
@@australianaquarist not really any concrete reason that I can tell , but the best i can say is it makes the channel feel more personal and adds personality to it , and i think it looks better than a random fish
Hey, can I ask out of interest for myself, what sort of aquariums you keep? Just trying to get an idea if I have more salt, fresh, reef, turtle etc viewers!
@@australianaquarist i keep none , im 19 and i just love nature , vivarium , reptiles , fishes , crabs , aquariums , reef tanks just everything
Might need to sneak a little 2fter into the bedroom? Just don't do what I did, when I put striped marsh frogs in my "secret tank" and woke the entire family up with their croaking.
Very cool project, I love it!
Thank you! Hey, can I ask out of interest for myself, what sort of aquariums you keep? Just trying to get an idea if I have more salt, fresh, reef, turtle etc viewers!
@@australianaquarist Yeah sure, I have two freshwater tanks with small tropical fish. In a couple of years I'm planning to get a 1100 liter aquarium also with lots of small tropical fish as a community tank an maybe a couple of angels as a centerpiece 🤗
U have a amazing vision I can only hope to see the finished version of it with water and coral and the fish swimming in jt
Thanks for your compliment! I live my life , by making a choice and just running with it!
Holy shit, that scape looks awesome! can't wait to see this thing after the uglies if you go thru the uglies. I bet scaping that before building the rest of the glass made things soooooo much easier.
Ahhhh, the uglies.Hope not, though I'll be pulling out the secret weapons ....... liverock from Cairns Marine, and tube worm chunks from the rock pools.Bacterial biodiversity from nature, not a bottle. Yes, the aquascaping first was definitely intentional! Not sure it would have been possible otherwise!
Absolute genius idea. 👍👍😉😉❤️❤️🐠🐟🐠🐟
Why thank you!! I think setting the rocks away from the island structure will allow good water circulation, and geez the epoxy turned out really strong
Hey buddy another great video. Keep it up mate.
Thanks 👍 Vroomy, what kind of tanks do you keep?
@australianaquarist I have a cade 2100 s2, 7 footer. It's 8 months old, with a big bommie which I'm growing out a sps colony for chromis to hopefully use as a habitat. Trying to stock only small fish with 1 big tang for a grazer. You're an inspiration to this hobby mate.
Been subbed! Amazing work 🙌💯👏🔥👌
Thanks QCR’s!!
I am too impatient to see this finished.
My patience is being tested also!!
Stick with me though! It'll be worth it
Hey, can I ask out of interest for myself, what sort of aquariums you keep? Just trying to get an idea if I have more salt, fresh, reef, turtle etc viewers!
@@australianaquaristI Have 2x 4ft tanks built into a wall, top tank being cichlids, bottom being a planted community. The wife is in process of getting an aio 3ft saltwater set up for some clownfish an anemone.
@JustAnotherAusGamer
Nice! Inwall tanks can look amazing, being so seemingly integrated into the living space.
Love your words on what the community should be. I’m doing my best to help this take place in into the aquascaping community from Sydney where are you based out of interest ?
I’m up in Coffs Harbour. I started out life as a young boy chasing reptiles around Lucas Heights and Woronora, then Tanganikan tanks on the Tweed, reefs in FNQ and have called Coffs home for around 12 years now
@@australianaquaristI'm in Queensland and I've found it extremely difficult to find any communities around. Where do you find these FB groups where you can ask questions and trade gear?
@DJDDstrich I’ve just got a local Coffs Harbour Aquarium FB group. Have you looked up Brisbane Reefers or SEQ Marine Aquarists ( I think that’s what they’re called). If you’re in the Brisbane area, make the most of Gallery Aquatica Wynnum. Ania and the gang are very supportive. Also, if you head down the coast, don’t be afraid of looking me up!
what forums do you guys use in Aus? Would love to see some builds from people who have all the rock/coral local to them
There's not really an active forum anymore. Marine Aquarium Fanatics Australia is the largest Facebook group. We do still have a great supply of wild coral , though hobbyists are getting more interested in frags. Gallery Aquatica in Brisbane are great with store propagated coral at sensible prices, whereas many other stores are looking to replicate frag mania from overseas, and match the crazy pricing. I assume you're a strict reef keeper Logan?
@@australianaquarist Just didn't know if you had something similiar to reef2reef where people document their builds etc. Galleria Aquatica's youtube channel is great! I'm saltwater only so I'm looking forward to this build being finished!
Let's recover the community! Can't agree more.
Things have changed with the communities reliance on social media. I see it in my teenagers. The best part of having a hobby, is just talking, gas bagging, learning and sharing with each other. But really. Not behind a flashy instagram post.
So, feel free to stay your not gonna spoil the surprise till the later video! But what plants are you going with?
PS. If it helps out, I am a freshwater fish keeper (particularly monster fish) and ponds. Also have previously kept turtles. Do enjoy your brackish stuff however. Salt is always cool to see (specially with what you do) but not as much my personal interest exepct with unique takes like this one, your gobies and the timber in tanks etc.
The main shrub will be Carissa macrocarpa (Desert Star). I was originally just thinking of going with just the one plant variety, and clipping it into a bun shape. But the more I look at the island pictures, the more I see many plant species, including Pandanus, palms, what looks like Dracaena, and weird cascading plants. What do you think?
@@australianaquarist I like the C. Macrocarpa choice, I think you could try some papyrus also (should deal with even salt levels should that happen) even some of the rainforest arboreal orchids and Tillandsia air plants (could place some on some branches up above the base or even other plants, maybe even place in a dead tree as a foundation for these plants) even that Tillandsia usneoides may look awesome among the plants.
All your choices seem pretty damn good to at least give a crack.
There are a few places that list the plant species of the Palau islands if you ever are curious.
Also there is one marine supplier that gets red mangroves (Rhizophora Mangle) Athleas they did a few years back. May be worth a shot looking?
Following.
Nice one! I much appreciate your support
Subbed
Good one! I much appreciate it. Out of interest, what sort of aquariums do you keep?
we are VERY interested in hearing YOU as you go through the building process but your background music and other ambient noise is sometimes drowning you out.
Otherwise, watching with great interest.
Ohhhh that’s for letting me know. I’ll be sure to keep any music down - I’m just playing with trying to keep interest and momentum up in the video. Unfortunately my wife has some lorikeets in an aviary just outside the shed, which always wish to chirp when someone’s talking. Are you hearing persistent bird noises?!
Chur
I'm going to need some help understanding 'Chur' !!! Being an old bugger and all!
some nz slang for like sup or thank you or basically anything@@australianaquarist
Hey, can I ask out of interest for myself, what sort of aquariums you keep? Just trying to get an idea if I have more salt, fresh, reef, turtle etc viewers!
I have a large estuary tank like yours, a new zealand green gecko vivarium, a amazon aquarium and a shallow reef mangrove tank@@australianaquarist - i like the bluestripe snapper for large tanks
@glub9075 looks like you’re a jack of all tanks! Bit like myself. I find the blue stripes tend to fade their colours out in the tank. Do you find this also?
I wont sub, although I like your channel. You upload so little with many months in between is the reason. Srry
Yes, it’s been a tricky process trying to balance actually building this tank, videoing the progress and family/work. I do appreciate you watching the videos
