I watch DMScotty to learn learn 'how to craft.' Hankerin, part of why I watch you is because you give me the 'why do I craft' and the 'what do I do with what I craft.' It's the difference in making the most beautiful game pieces and knowing how to play the game beautifully.

    AAAAAAAAAGH! Fan girl moment!
You legit just made my wife think I was crazy as I started yelling and waving my arms at my laptop, while watching this with headphones.
Anyway to discuss the points brought to the table! This was a great thought session. I'm glad to see you define the two types of DM so well, because this is a concept I've been struggling with but didn't understand or know how to verbalize. I'm definitely the crafty DM. That part is easy for me, it's the mechanical part I struggle with as a new player/dm, but I think the mechanical part is what makes the crafts really shine so I'm working' on it.
While the crafting parts of your vids are where I stole my craft aesthetic (and honestly your stuff was what made me pick up the foam and glue gun, not Scotty or DMG), the craft isn't the main reason I keep coming back for more. It's your DM philosophy, your thought process, your inspiration to achieve the most dynamic game situations possible!
I love that your vids are %20 craft %80 talking, thats what makes your channel stand out. And the crazy amount of game ideas you can come up with using 5 pieces of scatter blows my friggin' mind!
    /love letter

24:30 Never stop doing what you do!! As a few of the other comments have said. You are that voice that answers the question "what do i do with all this awesome stuff i crafted?"
It may be true that some of the other crafting DMs do it better. But you actually show/give us awesome and practical knowledge of what to do with it! Not just "check out this cool thing" but "here are the principles that makes this thing so cool, and how YOU can make it awesome in your game."

I've been DM'ing for twenty years and I like to think I have my 'style' pretty well down by now, from the finite points of rules I tweak because they don't really feel consistent with the result of the game through to the encounter dynamics but I have to say your EXTREMELY well put ideas, and especially incorporating complex ideas behind literature and the audience experience (I want to guess a literature or philosophy major maybe? Ive seen you talk about fairly obscure bits of chem as well but I know its a broad discipline over there vs our focused model in the UK) have really change how I think about my games. I can't say if the PLAYERS notice a dramatic difference in THEIR enjoyment, but I damn sure do in mine. And fuel to keep the fire burning is what really matters when your campaign runs longer than two dozen sessions.

Also.. how fast and simple it is to draw an instance on graph paper vs. crafting 3D terrains is insane. I can't come home and tell my wife.. I'm going to spend 6 hours for the next 3 months doing arts and crafts in the garage and I guess we can hang out on the weekends.

I've just finished my first game as a DM, and I had characters climbing on crates for advantage, characters dragging others to safety and even using the environment in combat. I think everythings better with a hint of, well if you take the strength check why wouldn't you do something like that. Carry the halfling like a backpack. Thanks for getting me back into the hobby and giving me loads of awesome badass ideas.

Thank you for continuing your work on these videos, I really do appreciate the in depth analysis on how to eat and sleep DM'ing. I love the crafting and humor, but I want to say that your unique strength is to teach that DM'ing requires an arsenal of lore and skills. I feel like I just finished a DM Lecture, and thats awesome.

Great video on how to balance your craft vs adventure planing. I think videos like this are what you bring to the youtube community, also by god you are very entertaining and hilarious. Lots of other DMing channels just feel like you are in lecture hall taking notes from a professor. Keep it up almost 4k subs you are doing something other channels arn't.

I've watched these other DM's that you mentioned. They are great. Your style and vision of what DM'ing is by far is the most unique and informative one out there. I prefer to plan and design for a few months before my campaign gets started which is where I believe we differ but don't stop your channel. This is bananas. B-A-N-A-N-A-S.. Like Coors.

I love Lair go Knowledge!!!! It's my favorite show on the Drunkens & Dragons net...I think that "mechanics" applies better to the game design by the DM than how the players use that mechanical environment. Could we say that "mechanical exploitation" by players already has a word -- "tactics"? When you get on top of the hill and then attack the people at the bottom from the high ground, that's a tactic. When you use the thin passage to prevent a small group from getting surrounded and overwhelmed by a numerical superior opponent, that's a tactic. When you wear a giant tube on your head to make it look like you are not threatening when you are really a badass, that's a tactic. Or something....Now you don't have to hate "mechanical exploiter" players because they are really just "brilliant tacticians." :) PS...I say keep doing the channel because it is fun and isn't that what is most important? It's like I said a long time ago, you make it cool to be a geek in a way that people like Bill Gates fail...

    • @Runehammer1
      @Runehammer1  9 ปีที่แล้ว

+Violet Deliriums aha! I rebuke that analysis! TACTICS are applicable to any setup or scenario..they are principles of application of force. Mechanics are using the actual, specific, available elements of a PARTICULAR scenario.

nice video. your work here has great value. I started back in 1st edition using graph paper. made this huge map and of course the problem always arises..As a DM you have things in mind for your group to go left but freedom of their choice they'd go in a completely different direction and then your stuck cuz you only set up certain variables. then you're left looking like a stooge. I'd rather not improvise on the fly. the 2.5 2.6 look is.an incredible way to keep your party contained giving you the buffer needed not to have to think randomly.

    I don't get something.
I get whats fun in character art, but does it serve a functional part in helping you build your world?
I think it helps a lot by giving you a feel of that character or object you created, but the way you talk about it sounds like it helps you more than that.

Hey, Hank - my world exists in a condominium. So space is limited. I love crafting, but it looks like I will have a paper world. Got the Index Card RPG stuff which is cool. And I have paper figures. Looks like I will be exploring a paper world or simply an imagined existence which is fine, too. I am working on "less is more" - because I tend to over prepare and get too attached to my own (wonderfully sexy and cool) ideas.
