      I would only add that whatever M2M instrument you order it would need a lacquered Maple Fingerboard.
      And if you go that route I would like to add that maybe Abalone might be a better choice than MOP.
      The Block MP inlays on my LP Custom are all but invisible against the light colored Maple Fingerboard.
      Just saying...........
      Gotta add a Stinger with your Trogly Logo at the base of the headstock/Stinger.
      In the same location you would find Spiders, Centipedes and Cobras!
      EDIT: As a nod to your past have the maple fingerboard sort of carry through the top with a figured maple strip similar to a Spotlight Special (only if it looks good).

      Na - I just built something very similar. I don't miss bridge pickups at all and rarely use them - and if I do it's in combo with a neck or middle. Most sound shrill and empty - not as full as a neck pickup. The only bridge pickup I've found tasty is the Gibson "Dirty Fingers" that I installed in another build. That one actually sounds pretty good. Everyone is different and that is a good thing - nothing wrong with preferring one over the other. That is what makes guitars so much fun. :-)

      I think I'd rather have a single pickup in the neck than a single pickup in the bridge

    • @darwinsaye
      @darwinsaye 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If a guitar's only going to have one pickup it has to be in the neck or maybe even a midway position for me. Can't stand guitars that have the one pickup but in the bridge position. Don't even get me going on bass players who play on the neck pickup alone.

    • @kokokola7725
      @kokokola7725 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Me too man, never understood why the bridge is seen as the default or standard pickup to have for a single pickup guitar. Neck pickups are much more useful and versatile IMO, especially if it's a humbucker. They respond much better to picking dynamics, you can obviously have nice smooth clean tones but you can get a lot of bite out of them if you push them enough. I have an SG Standard that I've modified to be a neck pickup only guitar and I love it. It's really the only configuration I want at this point. I wish it was more common outside of jazz boxes.

    Neck pickup only guitars are something I've wanted to see for a while. To me the neck pickup is a lot more important than the bridge- all my lead and clean playing is done in the neck position, so I really only use the bridge for heavy rhythm. I could see a guitar like that being excellent for math rock/modern prog tones. I'd use a DiMarzio Air Norton if I bought one, simply for the versatility of that pickup.

    1:20 That ES175, I learned to play on one of those, with the exact same configuration as the one pictured. Best neck I’ve ever played, nice and thin. It’s a mid 60’s and it belongs to my brother. He still has it. He’s ten years older than me and has a masters degree in Jazz piano and guitar. He taught me how to play on a cheap Yamaha acoustic, but I quickly ditched that and played his 175. I couldn’t play it when he was around, but luckily he was always at school practicing piano and wasn’t at home very much. I would hook it up to my Boss OS-2 overdrive/distortion pedal and that thing would sound so gnarly. Sometimes he would leave his Roland Jazz Chorus 77 at home and I would rock out with the 175 and that very loud amp.

    For me, the most important thing on a Jazz Paul would be to have a fat single coil, like a P90 or a Duncan Phat Cat. Such tones! On top of that I'd probably add a trapeze tailpiece for the added resonance.
    The rest is largely cosmetic... I like the natural finish but book-matched maple would be the way. I'd pair that with gold hardware (Grover tuners), white binding, white pickguard, rosewood neck with MoP inlays. For the back, a medium-light stain on the mahogany, giving it some warmth and contrast, but I'd also consider a maple cap or laminate with binding on the back as well, not unlike those fancy Teles you see sometimes.

    I own a single pickup guitar, but that's just the bridge. I absolutely love it for playing heavier stuff, I tend to pick high so the lack of a neck pickup gives me some freedom for that style (still a huge fan of having a single coil neck for crispy cleans though). This particular guitar though... I'd love to play it just to see how it feels... not sure if I'd want to own it though. Just the neck seems a little one dimensional in terms of tone. At least a single bridge can get away with trying to do something different a bit easier if you get bored.

    Ok, my “if money was no object” Jazz Paul transparent back, R9, ebony finish, split-parallelogram inlays, ebony board, flower pot on the headstock, w/b/w binding all around the top, neck and headstock, floating mini-hum-bucker, old school jazzbox pickguard scaled down, with “hidden” volume and tone under it. A floating bridge, and the split trapeze tailpiece Epiphone used to have on their archtops. Gold hardware usually isn’t my style, but gold on an ebony finish, yes please. Otherwise, I’ll keep the traditional woods, nothing too fancy.

  • @renodavid
    @renodavid 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You read my mind with the idea of the floating pickup (OK, I read yours). It would look a lot better, but then I remembered that the whole point of a floating pickup is to avoid disturbing the vibrating top of a hollowbody. So, on a solid-body Les Paul, it would serve no sonic purpose. But, still, that lone humbucker does look clunky. Maybe a mini-humbucker? Hey, I wonder if anyone makes any gold or amber-colored pickup rings that would match the knobs. That would be an interesting look. Then you could make all the hardware gold...it would look awesome!

  • @willmatson3103
    @willmatson3103 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Honestly, binding is just gaudy imho. Less wood removed is better for the wood stability. This is something that's been known for literally centuries; in the violin manual written by Mozart's father (himself a very celebrated teacher of the instrument), there's a comment where he says that a student should seek out a violin that's plain and unadorned with the 'foppery' of inlays and binding, as it adds nothing to the tone of the instrument and if anything, takes awhile from its structural stability.
    If I were going to design a custom guitar, I'd maybe opt for 'faux' binding with the maple cap edge being unpainted, but I wouldn't want the neck or body bound either. And for the fretboard, I'd probably prefer very small dot or entirely absent fret marker inlays.

    If I were to have a single pickup LP custom made I would have them put the pickup in the center with it being just a touch closer to the bridge if not dead center in the middle where the pups usually are at. I think this would be a truly unique sounding Les Paul. The least used position on LP is the full neck position so why anyone would go that route is beyond me. Maybe if you had a high output pickup and used like a 1 meg ohm pot for both volume and tone maybe then it would sound OK. If it's just a standard Gibson set up it would be too muddy for me, rarely do I use just the neck.

    Absolutely would rock, I love neck pickup only guitars and this is the first time I've seen this configuration on a Les Paul. I don't love the top but I'm not a big fan of figured tops in general. Would be much more appealing as a plain top or with a solid color, more fitting of the minimalist layout. Would be even better with just a single volume knob that coil splits, never found tone controls to be of much use on neck PUs. Would be cool to see with a wraparound too. I've never understood why it's assumed that the bridge pickup is the one to have in a single PU guitar, they can be fun but they're not nearly as versatile IMO.

    If I were to do a Jazz Paul I'd go for the silver burst finish, as a nod to Charlie Christian, with an unbound neck with no inlays at all and for a pick up I'd go with a New Yorker (Delux) but with a black surround to go with the finish. As it happens Epiphone did make neck pick up only Coronets with them and they do work well for that. Just a stop tail and the controls as on a Jr. However a stacked tone control, the inner one would be the tone the outer being a blend for piezo.
    Godin did used to do a Jazz model that was built around their piezo system with just the neck hum bucker.

    There is a sludge metal band from Ireland and they are called Slomatics. And the guitar player has a Les Paul Standard in white with the single neck pickup.

    A Robert Fripp inspired Jazz Paul would be cool. Black with a single neck PAF and mahogany top. I would give it a bass cut control also, though. That would help dial it in.

    I would rock that--if I could afford it.
    I use the neck pickup a lot, and I love no pickguard on a Les Paul with a natural or sunburst finish.

      Work on your slow vibrato.
      It takes practice but well worth the effort.Gary Moore was pretty masterful with the slow vibrato.
      You've got your tone nailed down pretty good, it's all just more time playing.
      Just try to play as often as possible and you should be fine.
      BTW, nice Epi LP.

    A les paul florentine with a mini humbucker or the alnico 5 in the nec and a bigsby in a shellac finish like an old violin (doesn’t have to be violin brown but a violin brown burst would be cool ) super 400 inlays and multi layered binding all around
