- NO MEN ALLOWED IN THIS MARKET IN MANIPUR! 🇮🇳
Yo guys, on my second day in Imphal I have decided to visit one of biggest and the most famous market in Imphal. Ima Keithel - meaning “mother’s market” in the local Meitei language - in Imphal, the capital of India’s northeastern state of Manipur, is said to be the largest women-only market in the world. Men can enter the space - but only to buy goods, to work as porters or guards or to provide the women with cups of milky chai. The creation of Ima Keithel dates back to the 16th century Kangleipak Kingdom, when it began as a makeshift, open-air market for bartering crops. To bolster the war efforts against the neighboring Burmese and Chinese, in 1533 conscription was made mandatory in Manipur and all men were trained as warriors from a young age to protect the kingdom’s perimeters, which run along the border with Myanmar. Only married women may sell at the market, and a retiring vendor usually passes her space to a female family member. The protector: Ima Imoinu, the goddess of wealth and business, is the patron of the market. Enjoy!

During the time of Kings reign there was lot of frequent war. So most of the mens are out in the battlefield far from their home. So women need to fed their children & elders.they came out to sell whatever they had at their disposal to fed their family thus womens market started. This tradition is going on from many centuries. Thus no mens are not allowed in this market as a seller. About greeting people you had to say "khurumjari" we dont say Namaste And "Thaagatcharee" for Thankyou.
Bro visit churachandpur too...

Hi Mete, the face paint that u spoke about is called 'chandan tilak' in Hindi. In India, those who follow Hinduism apply tilak on their forehead with sandalwood paste or with something called kumkum or sindoor. So, wat u saw in Manipur is a tradition followed by the Manipuri Hindus. They apply sandalwood (or chandan) paste on their forehead and on the nose as part of their Hindu tradition.
Also, bora as u rightly said is pakora in Hindi and fritters in English. The prickly/thorny and sea urchin like vegetable is called thaangjing in Manipuri, makhana in Hindi, and foxnut in English. And as u said u know wat aamla is, is called Heikru in Mainpuri, and Indian gooseberry of course in English.
Sorry that u struggled with communication gap in d beautiful state of Manipur. Those who are well-versed in English and Hindi (be it older or young generation) would have explained u better about the things. But not bad, those who made an attempt to tell u wat u were asking really tried hard. Some were shy. But you could somehow understand a bit as to wat they said. Thats wat we enjoyed in d video. The video is good. Loved it!
Ok
....... Would have explained to ......
All the ladies are so lovely. Some of the conversations were really funny 🤣
The video was so nice and lovely i didn't skip even a second. Enjoyed the whole video. Love from Manipur.
Many funny conversations😅 that our Emas don't know English they are old generation anyway its our pride for visiters to visit here in Manipuri and explore our IMA MARKET. Love from Manipur❤
It's so funny conversation with our Emaas but atleast they are trying to explore what they have selling things anyways great the Emas in our nation and as well as thanks alot to visit in our native place Manipur from Germany. So,
We heartily most welcome for visitors to visit here again thanks a lot..🙏
Why do only married woman allow to sell in Ema Market ?
Ema Market is possibly the oldest and largest woman-led market in Asia . Earlier, men usually were the breadwinner of the society but during the war against British and Manipur, men served as army to face the war. Thereby to run the family slowy women came out to earn for livelihood. Thus, the system continued and it became the symbol of women empowerment.
500 year old market.
P.S: Subject to correction.
Thank you for coming. 😊
Did meiteis fought british or they fought alongside british??? For what I remember Kukis fought the british not meiteis.

"Jantra" that you said looks like bullets are actually a container where sacred text woild be kept and then you will wear it as a necklace or wear it on your arm. The sacred text is there to protect you against demons and bad souls. Also laing with the sacred text a pice of "phanek" or woman's skirt will be kept, it is so because woman's wear protects us from demons, as woman's wear are mother's wear

Men of the Meitei ethnicity went to serve in the army during war. As a consequence, women had to support their households by cultivating their fields or weaving textiles and then selling the products on improvised markets. The improvised markets led to the formation of the Ima Keithel(Market).
Similar theory in Khasi society. Men went to war and many didn't come back so children take mother surname and women had to take care of property and became the matrilineal culture that it is today
Thanks for exploring our manipur and really interesting this video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😊

Ima Keithel basically means ‘Mother’s Market’. In the early days there was a labor system in Manipur which forced all the male members of the Meitei community to work in other places or fight wars, leaving the women behind in the villages. So to support their household, the women took the responsibility in their own hands. They cultivated their paddy fields, weaved textiles and created products that they sold in improvised markets thus leading to the birth of Ima Keithel.
