Lovely video! Selkirk yard is a really nice place to watch trains yard opetarions! About the SD40-3... there are better ways to upgrade these wonderful SD40-2 (my favorites). The Illinois Central did a greath job on their ex SD40-2 now SD40-3 keeping the original cab visual which is infinitely more beautiful.
Selkirk is the largest rail yard on the East Coast , all CSX traffic to NYC, Boston and New England pass through it, it began as a small interchange yard between the B&A and the NY and West Shore Line RR , it was greatly expanded in the 60s during the Perlman days just before the big Pennsylvania RR NYC RR merger, NYCs original yard in the Albany area was in West Albany , interstate 90 passes through the middle of the place it once was, just west of Albany after leaving the river and heading over the hill, the land levels out to a wide spot, this is where NYCs West Albany yards where, it was made obsolete by the Selkirk yard, the then President of the NYC RR Alfred Perlman believed he needed a larger more modern yard to handle what he thought would be a huge increase in east coast traffic after the merger in 68, so he tried to prepare for it by upgrading the rail road, he got fired for it, because the new Penn Central management wasn't about rail roading, it was more about getting rich by robing the company, so they didn't like real rail road men, Perlman went on to save the Western Pacific RR from bankruptcy in 1970,
Amazing video. You allowed in the yard? Where is the best spot for railfans to watch trains in this yard. I am planning a future trip to this yard in the next 2-3 years.
Railroads are very welcoming to railfans provided we don't trespass onto RR property. With hundreds, and in the case of the big Class 1 RRs, thousands of miles of track, it's not exactly easy to keep an eye out everywhere. That's where we, the railfans, come in. We're like free security. We know what looks suspicious and what doesn't, what should or shouldn't be there, and we're really just huge nerds so we will actually call RR police or dispatch if we see problems. Many of us have done this.
Nice video! Got to love those yard slugs! I had no idea CSX SD70ACe's were rare, I saw one in Naperville and thought nothing of it.
