Man, a buddy of mine built UW Heroic for super cheap and had a positive win rate against my really expensive Dirty Water(UB Control). I was so salty, lol.
27:45 You could've continued playing. Pay 3 mana for reject, leaving up an island. Upkeep exile march with Mavinda, exile the slip out to pay, targeting 2 creatures: The trespasser and a dragon. The triggers stacks so that you end up drawing to the drake's ability, thus you could've payed the ward cost and block the Shredder with Mavinda if needed.
27:45 could you not pay for mavinda, then March of mist x=2 to phase out the trespasser and 1 drake to draw a discard for ward, and then mavinda chump block the ledger shredder? I might be missing something but I think that was a valid line.
The issue is that the Ward trigger goes on the stack last, so you can't draw to discard something to it. EDIT: Nvmd. You would be playing March on the opponent's turn. Yeah, he could have
Seth, I'm a long time fan and your level headedness at 10:50 leading to a match win is probably the tightest I've seen you play. Kudos for seeing that line. I feel your competitive skills really shine when playing tempo.
Honestly Seth is a very good player - just not quite as good as a thousand players thinking together while watching him play. It's an unfair standard only met by the very top tier of players.
27:53 you actually had it! Or rather, you were able to force the opponent to have removal. Using Mavinda on the opponent's turn to flash back March, exiling Slip, targeting a Stormchaser Drake and the Graveyard Glutton was the winning line here. It's because of trigger stacking - casting it on your opponent's turn, their Ward trigger will go on the stack before your Drake trigger, so you get to draw the card you need to discard for Ward, and then unless opponent found removal, you chump block with Mavinda and win on the crack back.
I’ve been into Mavinda Magecraft stuff ever since Strixhaven, this looks super fun! Been wanting to try Stormchaser Drake for a while and I think Virtuoso is the perfect complement for an Azorius build
So Azorius over Bant? Is Angelfire worth switching into Naya or Jeskai? What are your recommendations? I think the archetype has more then just meme potential, especially in BO1
@@Germynator31 I’ve had a lot of success playing Selesnya, but I think going either Bant or Jeskai has a lot of potential, specifically for either Dragonsguard Elite or Angelfire - the trouble is that the deck really wants to play on curve, so playing a third color can make the mana base kind of problematic? @@adamoberlitner1188 oh does this archetype have an official standard name yet? Magecraft? Heroic doesn't seem to fit. It's hard to Google and compare decks:(
This deck plays largely on the opponent's turn. I've tried it with Lumimancer, and it tends to underperform. Usually I'm saving mana for protection, and this makes pumping up Lumimancer feel like it goes against the theme of the deck. That being said, a more white, creature-heavy version of this deck would love Lumimancer
At 27:45, you see a guard approach can tap a creature, you had exactly enough to tap it on their upkeep, pay for the ward discarding slip out the back, and chump block with the flyer :( Edit: nvm, would have worked with march to draw if the triggers are stacked correctly.
He could've not done that because if the spell that mavinda targets is used without targeting a creature you control, it costs 8 more to cast. But he could've cast march instead
It only works with March, but it's a complicated interaction because you need to discard the card you draw with it targeting your own creature. Still, barring the opponent drawing removal the game was Seth's with that play.
The very first deck I ever built was a mono-white Heroic deck back in original Theros (started playing a month before Theros pre-release). It wasn't the greatest deck but it could do some ridiculous things. Hero of Iroas, Sunbond (once Born of the Gods released), Hopeful Eidolon, with Elspeth, Sun's Champion as a finisher... I remember one FNM where I ended up winning off of Elspeth's ultimate because I had an infinitely big Hero of Iroas and the opponent had an indestructible Colossus of Akros. Neither of us could get enough damage through until I got Elspeth to ultimate (the 1/1s did some damage and would've eventually won but... I digress). We actually only played one game because the game took so long it ended up being a BO1 match long before BO1 was a real thing.
I agree with you that Delver is bad in the phasing version of this. Ascendant Spirit is pretty good as a way to have the same early-game pressure effect, but better. If you want to go zero-rare, though, Delver becomes a key card for the deck as you go heavier on counterspells and lose Mavinda.
Loved the deck, do you think since you didn't like delver that much, a non-budget upgrade could be ledger shredder? I am always curious where and how to improve those budget decks!
Really cool deck that utilises the phasing out mechanic really well. About the replacement for delver: i think you would need another one mana creature. Monk of the Open Hand should be worth a try since it will also grow kinda consostently with these cheep spells.
Am I missing something at 39:43? They go to kill your flipped Delver with Vanishing Verse, you counter with Sejiri Shelter naming Black when there's a Wandering Emperor staring at it. Why not name White? It still blanks the Verse and also blanks the Emperor.
Seth, if you are unhappy with *Delver* , might I suggest either/or of *Lantern Bearer* / *Mischevious Catgeist* ? Good early plays for chumping and removal-eating. Plus Disturb interacts really well with connive!
Clever Lumimancer is a great replacement choice for Delver. Have been playing it in a red white magecraft/burn deck since Strixhaven came out. Really solid one-shotter to pair with Virtuoso.
You might have won on the ledger shredder trespasser match by phasing a drake as well as the trespasser because the ward triggers before the draw trigger, from there you would have to chump block with mavinda but you would have the space to go for the kill
I run a very similar deck, but I also run Fly (which is awesome with Double Strike), Twinblade Geist (which can be a threat and give someone else double strike while targeting them later), and Curious Obsession.
Woo! Love it. I've been playing all forms of this deck for the past month (Boros, Naya, Jeskai). So far, Naya has been my most successful thanks to Snakeskin/Tamiyo's and Sticky Fingers. IMO, Ollenbock Escort is the best/cheapest other small creature to add protection for Illuminator.
Oh hey, it's a variant of the Azorius Delver deck I've been trying out. I've been using most of the non-creature spells in this list, with my threats being Delver of Secrets, Faerie Vandal, and Ledger Shredder mainly.
This deck makes me wish that they had pushed the second batch of Disturb creatures a little harder - having a cheap creature that turns into a cheap aura in the midgame sounds like something this deck would really want (especially since it would give you another nice pitchable for your Connive cards). I mean, it might still be cute to toss in some Lantern Bearers or Twinblade Geists, but it'd probably end up being way too clunky.
I mean as far as one drops are concerned Clever Luminancer exists. It just seems like it's always better than a delver. This deck is absurd I may have to attempt a modern version of this. I have a Selesnya Blitz I enjoy. Wonder if bants doable or too many colors lol.
So in the non budget version I swapped Ledger Shredder with Luminarc Aspirant. I think it works better, especially under an archon. Though tbh, the deck has such a bad midrange matchup, and that's most of the format.
@@MTGGoldfish It's been good. It allows you to grow a threat while being able to throw away lands connive. I think Clever Lumimancer is actually better than Delver here. Delver is good for the turn 1 flip and whittling them down in the air, but with the importants of creatures in this deck it seems like it's just a 1/1 most of the time. With Lumi you get another big beater to complement Virtuoso and Drake's draw and it can be very easily protected with all the phase spells. Not to mention, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Lumi keeps the magecraft buffs when it phases back in, meaning you can get even more gains and throw a security bypass on it to seal the deal same way you would with Virtuoso.

If he paid 3 for the reject, that leaves him with one mana. March of Swirling Mist can't be cast because it costs his last blue mana plus x for targeting. He could discard his last blue card to help pay for it, but if he does he can't pay for the ward 1 which is discard a card, and he can't target the graveyard glutton. His real mistake was not leaving the virtuoso back to block, because he didn't even need to attack with it to win the game.
By having to pay for Reject, Seth can't cast March of Swirling Mist for enough mana to target both lethal threats. He could pitch Slip Out the Back to the spell, but then he wouldn't be able to pay for Graveyard Trespasser's Ward.
Actually I was wrong about not leaving the virtouso to block. Graveyard Glutton's ability would have activated on his attack and Seth would have lost from being pinged
Couldn’t Seth have played March of Swirling Mists using Mavinda (pitching slip out the back) on his opponent’s turn targeting Graveyard Glutton and one of his Stormchaser Drakes? As the non-active player his draw trigger would resolve before the Ward trigger and he’d have a card to discard. It's weird to me that lvd, cgb and set all posted a video of this on the same day
"I think we phased out our opponent's will to play magic."
😭😭😭
Leonin could be cool in this deck!
game 3 omg brutal
This standard has so many combo decks that are loosely viable.
I want this in a pioneer form 😫
Set those phasers to stun.
Badass
Woot woot
Leonin Lightscribe or Symmetry Sage are probably way better than Delver in this deck.
I was thinking about the Leonin 👍🏼✨
Folks can yell at the chump attack all they want. A win is a win in my book.
Orvar would be cute
Ohh, that sounds hilarious.
MTGO contents when?
Today for Against the Odds!
Opponent plays bad unplayable counter that probably shouldn't be in their deck... and kicks your ass with it 🤔
Lol, yep :)
Phase en’ John
Orvar should be here for maximum foolishness.
If only Orvar was made in the last couple sets and had some kind of busted additional text that lowered his casting cost.
@@Dolphgrim I mean, if we have a sudden substitution affect and Raven's Crime, we get to copy a creature for basically free.
Clever Lumimancer would be way better than Delver in this deck
Man the salt in some of the games was interesting. I love the calling opponents cards bad while being rofl stomped by them. Really out of character for olive
Wtf is it saffron olive
now to add magecraft!
