That is so cool! Very nicely done, I'm a woodworker myself. There's a certain satisfaction that comes from making something out of nothing! I make beautiful things out of pallet wood! Thanks for sharing!
I have used corks in the pass but all I did was to use a sewing needle and put it threw the center of the cork and after gong threw the cork simply pull the line from the needle... and you got a float. thanks very nice ...
Good work! It's amazing how such a simple device has so many ways to individualize it. This is pretty much how bobbers a were made 100 years ago. I've always made mine super functional with long 18 inch dowels to telegraph anything that touches it. If anyone is pressed for time, just skip the shaping, but shaping gives a more custom look. Leaving the cork in base configuration makes for a more rustic look. I used to use boat builder's epoxy on mine, but it's too much trouble. Spar varnish is right on. Nice drying rack. Would have never thought of clothes pins. My floats are so long I could never dip them, but I think filling a 1 inch * 20 inch long PVC pipe full of varnish would do the trick. I think that's how bamboo fly rod builder do it.
Wow, thanks for the compliment! Your videos were a huge inspiration for these bobbers. Anyone who likes this video should check out Black Warrior Lures videos.
I made some floats last year using your method. I wanted to make some more this year and forgot. I turn mine on a Jet mini lathe. I Super Glued my dowel in place and filled the cavities with SG. After turning, I sealed the cork with SG. It is time costly, but what the heck, I have a bobber that is just as good if not better than the number one selling cork float. If I loose it, no big deal. I just make another one. My friends are always asking where I buy these floats. When I tell them I make them, they say, "NO way!" On another note. If someone want to use a tube and plan to dip them. they need to plug the openings with modeling clay, so the dip will not go inside the tube. I do this with my brass tubes when gluing them for making pens.
*I bought these as a recommendation by a friend. Super light and extremely sensitive. I bought the 1/2oz first and then the 3/8oz both work well for jigging and flies with braided line.*
Its great idea i stumbled onto old tackle box with float like this and used a lurh genson flatfish behind it so you can stay on the stike zone or skirt the edge of the themocline parallel to the shore along the drop off floats a great and this is great way to make your own bobbers thanks so much
I had the same thought about etsy. There are all sorts of fishing items on there. But I didn't see any fishing bobbers in the "handmade" section. Yours are beautiful!
Great idea! Great DIY tools! Going to make the lathe ASAP, perfect for my needs. I made some using coffee swizzle sticks for pass thru bobbers. Thought...maybe seal secure the thread w/Super Glue before painting. Purely for strength. No, they didn't look well... they look great! THANKS!
Great video. You have really made some good looking well built floats with the minimum of operations and very informative commentary. A well thought out presentation.
Sweet! Pretty crafty! I might go a cheaper route and just seal(varnish) without adding colors. Although, a bit of color could be added with permanent markers(Sharpies) before varnishing. Just a thought. (Like the lathe, too!)
I've been cleaning a local river and found a bunch of corks washed up on shore and now I'm gunna use this vid and make some bobbers hopefully. Found a fishing line and a hook too so I was thinking about crafting a pole and a bobber from just stuff I find on shore.
You can make it adjustable by putting an oring on the top and bottom of the dowel. Run the line through the orings and you can make depth adjustments while fishing.
On Amazon there is a mini lathe with little wood working tools for 39 bucks. They all was 49 but one was selling the exact same one for 39 so I ordered it and got it the next day with prime. The little lathe has 5 speeds and it has a screw looking thing that goes in the chuck that I use and the point on the other end and yes it’s cool because they all turn out different. And I do like u do in gecko and the put it back on the lathe and get some funky looking paint stripes. My hardest part is getting a perfect whole in the center
A light wood works well also. Like dry drift wood thats been painted. Any wire thats small enough works pretty well. Might want to cut a small depression around the wooden dowel and then wrap. Might want to use a plastic straw in the float hole or plastic evaporative cooler water line, for slip bobbers.
Makify1 Ask people. Do an update video, talking to your audience about things. Mention the last video and ask people to comment if they would be interested. That might be a start. I'm not a fisherman myself, but this item would actually be good to ship.
Do you have any ideas on how to make a clip style bobber, unlike the slip style that you made in this video? It would be nice to see a video of that type as well. Thanks.
Shaping it is interesting, but I don't glue the dowel. Actually I find an old stick in the woods and jam it in the hole along with my leader. Interesting project. Thanks
Is there anyway to show how you attached the wine cork bobber to your fishing line? I'm having issues seeing how it's attached and use. Thanx 😃. Cool idea❗️❗️❗️
Dude those are beautiful 😁 I make my own floats too, made in a similar way, but I use cheap hooks with barbs on the shank, cut on the end and pushed into the base of the dowl to thread your line through
Just subscribed.......fantastic video, that has given me some great ideas,to help me in my own float(bobber) making . I`m a fisherman from England who is very much into older traditional tackle and methods and making and refurbishing vintage tackle too. I`ve been making my own floats for a while now, using goose quills mostly but I want to move on to other materials such as cork. Having no specialised tools or a workshop and limited space at home, has made it a bit impossible.Your home made lathe is a great, simple idea which I`ll have to look into i think.........I'd best watch your how to construct it video !!!Many thanks for the inspiration........tight lines.
Gonna make some on next rainy day. Won’t have any problem finding wine corks because the wife leaves them laying everywhere, (just kidding)! Thanks for the info and hagd!
Came out great.. How artistic are you? What if you put 2 corks and made a Betty boop or something? . t Love the ones you made and they should hold up quite a while.👍👍
hello I'm from Brazil. We are not accustomed here to fishing with this type of float. could you make a video showing how to fish with it? I'm sorry, I do not speak your language, I used a translator. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
We attach the float above the hook to keep the bait at the depth of water we want it. It lets us know when the fish are biting because you will see the bobber pull down underwater

Do you have a site or blog we can visit and check out your creations :)

What a great bloke sharing his tips with us all. I found the video very inspiring.

The Titebond II works very well. Cheaper that boat builder's epoxy. This will help me get more floats out faster.
They look great and have a more durable finish than store bought. Now I know what to do with my collection of corks.
sell em >profit lol
Cool idea...nice to know some young people are not just taping keys. Great work.

The act of fishing is great for hangovers.

When I was a young lad I would just tie on a piece of corncob. No time involved and usually free. And quite stealth it hides in with the rubbish.
I had the same thought about etsy. There are all sorts of fishing items on there. But I didn't see any fishing bobbers in the "handmade" section. Yours are beautiful!
Well done mate, greetings from the middle of the desert in Saudi Arabia!
I have done much the same with bamboo skewers and balsa wood, but use small o-rings to attach the bobber to the line.
Those came out nicely and that's an understatement
I never subscribe to a channel after just one video. Except for this one. Absolutely stellar pal. 👌
I'm honored. Thank you!

Those bobbers look great. I love this project. Thank you for posting it.

Dorset. UK. Very informative and well made video. Thank you. Best wishes.
A very good video, I make mine just using a hand file, small electric drill and aluminium sanding paper. No real heavy power tools required.
Very nice work thanks for sharing this how to video. I have a ton of wine corks now I know what to do with them this winter.

Excelente trabajo, te felicito.
Saludos desde Córdoba, Argentina.
I like the plans so I started the build. Thanks for sharing.
My boy and I watched this and then we ran out to the shop to make a dozen of these bobbers! A good way to spend a cold January day.
Nice!
To be perfectly honest, we only stayed out in the shop long enough to grab some materials and tools and scoot back in tHe house where it's warm.

love this, I have just started my own perch bobbers in the UK. and this video cleared a few things up for me! thanks ;)
I'm glad it was helpful.
Genius finally found a use for wine corks I always wandered how to upcyle them thank you
Wondered* Thank me later.👍😁
Nice. Now I'm inspired to make the mini-lathe !!
Use a whip finish to finish your thread same knot used to finish flies and then you won’t have as much wasted thread. Good job on the bobbers.
Nice project for all ages .
Great film, they look nice.
Great, we used to make goose feathers when we were kids. Hello from Russia.
At last! a reason to drink wine. thank you
Just use tubing top and bottom to attach line and change floats fast. Great video
Excellent thread work! First rate.
These are really cool! You could throw them up in an etsy shop and I bet people would buy them. Just an idea.
Bruce A. Ulrich That thought crossed my mind too but I wasn't sure if there would be any demand.

Thanks for the video, it made me go to the store and buy bobbers.
Very professional video.. Easy to follow. I will be making these...
That's a great idea with corks. Big Thanks and keep them videos coming!!!
Geweldig mooie, maar daarbij ook stevige dobbers. Veel beter dan die plastiek rommel. Fantastisch !
Danke für das gute Video. Gute Laune für dich
Great video. You did a great job with the corks.

You my man are an artist, beautiful work must be gratifying

Great video, very hard to find cork from wine bottles in the uk these days, mosh bottles have screwed tops, or rubber type stoppers.
This made me subscribe. I love the craftsmanship and attention given to such a simple project. :-)
+Smaakjeks Kjeks Thanks!
Excellent bobbers thank you,para
That was a neat video. They look great!
Is there anyway to show how you attached the wine cork bobber to your fishing line? I'm having issues seeing how it's attached and use. Thanx 😃. Cool idea❗️❗️❗️
use the litlle lead pellets for calibrating the floats one before the loop and another after the loop ;)
Great job !!! and great idea !!! Thank you !!!
Lovely video and lovely bobbers. Well done
That's how they would fish in the early 20th century, and it worked. I recommend modern fisherman try it!
Simple clear and great results - thank you.
these would make awesome slip bobbers
Dude those are beautiful 😁 I make my own floats too, made in a similar way, but I use cheap hooks with barbs on the shank, cut on the end and pushed into the base of the dowl to thread your line through
Excellent idea definitely going to Try this
Hello....

What a great video. I already have everything to make these. I'm gonna make a few. Thanks Great job.
Would be easy to make that into a slip bobber easy enough. Nice way to recycle some trash good job.
Very nice, looks like a lot of time !!!
Nice and easy instructional video to follow. Thanks.
I’d love to make a few of this and use it for Steelhead fishing here in Ontario Canada., thnx for the idea
