In this exciting episode, we transform a second-hand party tent into the ultimate shelter for our camper truck, ensuring our build continues through the rainy months ahead. With the truck and habitat towering at least 3.5m / 11.5ft, we'll need an extra large structure that can brave the wild winter storms… but don't worry, we've got a few ideas!

Having put up a lot of these Gala tents for years, I would highly recommend running some large rachet straps over the top of the whole tent and back down the sides to some concrete anchor weights on the floor. Although you’ve screwed legs into the wood, the wind will pick up the top half and lift it out the joints.
The joints are bolted together but I think it’s a good idea to add a few ratchet straps. Thanks for the tip.
Having been a market trader with very heavy tool stool I still had to put 25kg weights on all 8 legs of the stall in any set up as a simple light gust would lift it up in the air and this is with nearly 5 tons of spanners, screws, nails, sockets, screwdrivers, hammers, chisels, power tools, chainsaws, and god knows what else all weighing the stall down , mama nature can put a massive bum spank in your day , I’ve seen stalls lift off for outer Bombay, so definitely either rope ties to drilled and bolted anchor points or ratchet straps with atleast a rating of 10 tons each, make em big and beefy. I guarantee you that those fixings on the fence post base bolted fixings will not hold up to a sustained gust force of 4 to 6 and will release your tent into a cross between a massive hang glider and a zeppelin. When fixing anchor points use an anchor fix glue or something similar like a multi surface bonding agent, most places will sell something useable.
Woh. That’s a little scary 😅 we were planning on getting some heft ratchets and using the a chemical fixing to blot some eyelets into the concrete. So I’m glad we’re taking the right precautions. Thanks for the tip…again! 😂😁
Totally agree no strength screwing into end grain, I would have drilled through the side of the poles and put a bolt in
Maybe a few guy ropes from the ridge and side poles and attach to the truck chassis
You folks have created quite an amazing space to spend a few too many winter weather months with a roof over your heads..
An incredible feel good episode this week, its 11:45pm and Im comfortably sitting sipping a nice 10 year old malt whisky and enjoying your crazy journey of self discovery.
stay safe folks, things got a whole lot dryer for you
Sounds like you’ve had a good evening! Glad you’re enjoying the episodes 😁 good to have you along for the journey! 😁
At the moment its a big (nice) tunnel you built. The next storm will right go through it! Would recommend to close the ends soon!! Concrete anchors to secure the walls are a good recommendation.
We’re on the same wavelength 😉 next week I think we’ll be making those upgrades
Fantastic progress! Once the truck is done, you've got enough room for a supporters party 😁
Great idea !!! We’ll need to get a disco ball. 🕺🏼💃🏻
I think it’s amazing what you’ve achieved. The ratchet straps are a must do in this case, because the tent is high up it will act as a wind tunnel and lift the whole thing off the ground. Cross brace will work also think about putting something to stop the wind and rain on the ends. Tarpaulin will work.
Yeah I think those are good precautions 👍 thanks for watching 😁
I say it's both genius AND ingenious! The music is excellent as well.
Thank you so much!! It was a bit of a risk but we pulled it off.
I disagree. Great idea. I thought the video was slightly too long (lots could have been cut out) and found the music annoying so I didn't finish watching sadly. I'm enjoying seeing the progress though!
You may need to put some cross bracing inside there using something like ratchet straps, it’s going to wobble side to side and could damage the trailer beside, if you put ratchet straps in 3 places like an X it should hold it in place
Absolutely essential. We've used our 3m x 6m pop up marquee with ratchets to anchor points in the concrete. One small gust and it will pull you off the ground. It's amazing how strong winds and buffeting can shred a marquee. Even consider dropping the sides if you know it will be windy to stop the wind from getting trapped in the marquee. Best wishes - Paul
A few people have suggested this. We will look into it 😁😁
Time will tell but we are all up for making it as secure as we can! 😁😁
Fantastic job
And a fantastic couple 👍👍
Thank you so much ❤️😁
Keep the amazing work going I find going off grid a brilliant way to live 🎉
Thank you for getting involved in the chat MJ we love virtually meeting everyone. We’ll have to do a live chat soon or something
Big truck plan, big tent, big friendly helper, = a big smile from me. Great video, looking forward to more.
😂 I love this comment thank you 🤩😁😁
You’ve got the best woman in the world she’s supportive and everything ❤
She’s the best!
I've been watching on FB. Did not realise you were on TH-cam. Now subscribed. I'm looking forward to catching up now. Love watching.
Amazing thanks for joining us! 😁
You dit a great great job guys
Let the build begin
Have FUN and be SAFE
Thank you and thanks for watching 😁😁😁
Great work, great vision.
Love to see people just getting on with it rather than prevaticating over things that might go wrong....
There’s too much to think about to over think it 😂 thanks for watching and the nice comment 👍😁
Like your scrimping and saving to do this
It has to be done! We’re pros at it now Ha😂😁
I have to say, I'm impressed with that. Good idea and well executed. Just enough room either side to fit it in. You have some good neighbours there. Definitely use some additional ties down straps, especially with no end walls on, strong guests underneath it will either lift it or tare something.
Thank you! Yea we are planning on adding some reinforcements 😁
Just Wow😮
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Just came across your channel. Amazing job getting the marquee up. Interestingly I helped putting up marquees at a music festival this summer. Halfway through the build a couple of the marquees blew away over night. They had not yet had straps added vertically down the sides. I would recommend putting in straps/ropes by the legs. Run the straps/ropes over the top of the marquee and down the legs and attach to a secure fitting in the concrete. Ensure a good tension in the straps/ropes. I would say you would probably only need three, perhaps four such straps. Not a lot of effort to safe guard the marquee. Good luck with your project 🙂
Thanks for watching, we do that in a later video 🙂
You are such a lovely couple. Setting up a tent is the best relation test. Keep up the good work.
😂😂😂 so funny and true. Putting up a tent should be a date to see how compatible couples are.
That’s big time well done
Thanks mate! 😁
It's a great start to my weekend watching you guys do great. My admiration for you grows every time I see all the work and effort. Love Hans.👍
Thank you Hans that’s so kind 😁😁
You guy's did a great job putting that marquee up now you can concentrate on building your new home and the weather can't stop you well done 👏
Hope so! 😁😁
Very impressive work, that really is the Marquis of marquees!
Your problem solving skills are great, and with help from your community you made it look easy!
If you have managed to block off the prevailing wind you may be able to manage without the ends
Good luck with the rest of the demolition and the build of the replacement accommodation - can't wait to see your progress!
Thanks so much ! Yeah I’m not sure how we could have done edit without extra help so it all worked out nicely. 😁😁
Absolutely brilliant..your videos are so good to watch..it's such a fantastic project .roll on next week.
Thank you so much! Glad you’re enjoying the series 😁😁😁 couldn’t do it without you
greetings from Ireland WOW that cover looks FANTASTIC well done
Thank you very much!
Well done . Lets hope the wind stays away.
Yes definitely! Time will tell
A brilliant idea
Very cool endeavour and thank you for putting Martin to work. 😊✌️♥️
Thanks Joanna 🙏 He’s a great helper! 💚
you guys are amazing! good to have help at hand 2, of course!!
Thank you!! Yea we got lucky with some helpful neighbours 😁
I love seeing you both having fun. Great video guys. Can’t wait for next video
Thanks so much!! Comments like this help 😁😁
One more step closer guys 🚚
💪🚚🎪
Slightly off today's topic but have you considered using the same locking system that they use for containers to secure the box down when you're transporting. From what I can tell there are 4 clamps, one in each corner, which are sufficient to secure a 35t container to the back of an artic hgv I'm sure the same system would easily handle yours.
I have been thinking about how to best secure it and I also thought that if it they can hold down a shipping container surely it could hold our accommodation. But maybe it’s too simple ? Maybe the weight of a shipping container plays a part? Not sure yet but I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s thought that could be possible. 👍
Bravo guy's, really great effort. That will go a long way to keeping the project moving forward.
Definitely! We can’t reply on the weather for anything ! 😁
I've used these marque tents for a similar purpose. The material though is rubbish to both sunlight and wind. If you can afford it, purchase a piece of polytunnel sheeting. Stretch as tight as you can over the frame and existing material. The existing material will act as a protective layer between the steel poles and the polytunnel. Polytunnels used a special tape, stuck to the steel to protect against heat and abrasion damage. The marque material will do that job.
Tie it down very securely ...... you've just created enough sail area to power a 60" yacht 🙂
Yeah that’s a good suggestion. I think we will eventually need to add a layer of protection. 👍👍
Brilliant solution....hope we have a mild winter....really enjoying your videos... Love the calmness of you both and the way you explain what the theory is behind each stage... Looking forward to next week
Thank you so much 😁 we try and keep level headed, there’s a lot that could go wrong so we just go with it 😅 glad you’re enjoying the series and thanks for coming along with us!
That marquee is a perfect fit! I’m so pleased for you. You can work in any weather now.
And £34.80 on scrap 😂
Rob suggests a shed at the front of the cab to store your tools and stuff might be handy?
A shed would be great 👍
Fantastic. I have total faith in you to finish whatever you start.
I am impressed with your teamwork. I was a little concerned the marque would be a bit flimsy in strong winds, but i like the way you have secured it to the base. May i suggest extra support of a crisscross from the top side bar down to the second post all the way along so if a strong wind dose come it wont pull out of the sockets.
Thank you! Yeah that’s a good idea. That would give it more rigidity for sure. It’s quite stormy today so let’s see how it goes 😂
Cranky Alexander sounds good
He’s great!
Wow absolutely brilliant. Keep up the amazing work guys. Already looking forward to the next installment.
Thank you so much 🙏 So are we! 😆
Good idea , now you can build through the winter
That's the plan! Time will tell if the marquee can handle it !
Wow, well done. Very impressive & a clever solution to a serious issue. 👍
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching 😁😁
Hey guys. What a victory for you guys to make a super nice workplace for the winter season, you are really ambitious and talented and you should have great respect for what you do, it's so nice to follow your journey so good luck and see you in the next episode. 👑👍
Thank you for such a lovely comment😁 we’re having a great time and knowing people are also enjoying it makes it even better 😁 and helps a lot when things get difficult 🙏
Top job you two , that is a superb work space...you're going to be laughing every day it rains ......well done 👏👏
Thank you so much!! we’ll only hear the rain from now on 😂
I hope no one has to take that trailer out next to you annytimes soon! Brilliant job and a great idea. Keep up the good work!
That would be very unlucky, it hasn’t moved in years 😅 Thanks for watching 🙏
Amazing episode, guys!!! 😮❤❤❤
Thanks! 🤩 Glad you enjoyed it ❤️
Great stuff! That will certainly help your morale and motivation, now that you won’t get drenched.
Absolutely!
Now you need some cool outdoor led lighting for the marquee
And a disco ball!!
Give your selves a big pat on the back brilliant job well done
Thanks Pete!
I’ve one of them tents and you need to make sure the roof strengthen wire bits the hooks are facing the ground or it will rub hole in the tent
Ours must be different, they will only go on one way. The turnbuckles aren't touching the tarp as they are now but they would poke at the tarp the other way round.
You’re right! And we were given bad instructions 😖 The hooks are clearly pointing up in the diagram. Grrr. Got some patching to do
Massive and good work. Love wathing you guys. Have a nice day best regards tobias
Thanks Tobias!! 😁
Great job, perhaps build a few wooden frames at the ends, and along the length,to reinforce the structure.
Thank you! Yes, we will be adding more tie-down points and more and more weight over the next few weeks. A second massive tarp or canvas would be ideal too
Good video again, what a clever idea to put up a tent, you can always tie down to trailer and old boat in strong winds.
Thank you! We’re going to be tying it down to more points and adding more and more weight over the next few weeks. A second tarp over the whole thing would be great too
Hi guys love the video a1 job have a lovely week end 😊😊😊
Thank you 🙏 You too!
You 2 have a great work ethic .
Thank you! We’re having a great time so that helps.
Ambitious 😂😂
Nice job guys 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much 😀
Brilliant! Well done!
Well done guyes. And yeah that was cheaper way.
Waaaaay cheaper! 😅
Only the boat tents is using thicker wall tubing... Made for vinter.
Time will tell I suppose 🤞🤞
Well done both great achievement 😊
Thank you! 😀
Positive effort and fantastic results. Will you be closing the front and back side of the shade. Use some lights on the top and side of the shade it's going to solve light issue for longer time to work. How ever the team effort was superb 😊 have a worry less happy build.❤❤😊
Thank you, yes that’s the plan. We’ll build the ends from the old steel floor off the back of the truck and wood as that’s where the wind will hit the most 💪
Nice job with what you’ve done but I personally would have kept it lower and just dragged waggon out to work on the cab, as it is it will be one big wind tunnel, I’d definitely put 3 or 4 ratchet straps over it and down to some good anchors as some strong winter winds will have that ripped off the posts, if the screws don’t pull out they will probably snap off- it’s amazing how powerful wind can be.
The batteries are dead atm and I’ll do anything to not have to work in the rain 😂 time will tell 🤞👍
@@RoadToOffGrideasy sorted with two new batteries.
Deffo put some strips over, if that takes off it could damage waggon, or other people’s possessions, boat etc or the building behind. A few screws won’t hold that when wind gets under it.
Yeah I think some heavy duty ratchets into concrete anchors are the way to go 😁 thanks for the tips 👍
cool, keep on working, it`s become great
Thank you !
hi again you you could convert a bus in there nex haha great work guys
A double decker could even fit!
@@RoadToOffGrid hahaha thats what i ment bless you both
Well done😊😊
Fantastic job
Thank you very much!
Love it 👏
Ficou ótimo
Parabéns
Brasília Brasil
Thank you 🙏
I would have placed a concrete block over the manhole cover, fixed the post to it and cut the post down to match the others in heights.
What would you do if you needed to access the manhole?
Over the years I collected old taps and brass plumbing bits in a shopping basket, when i weighed it in last year i got over £50, not a fortune but a suprise all the same. might be worth putting some lines from the top longitudinals to the concrete base?.
Free money is free money! Yea we will definitely add some extra ground anchors into the concrete
Mega
Great idea
Absolutely bonkers haha
Yes we are 😂
Great keep up the good work 👏 🙌 👍
Thank you! We’ll do our best 🙏
Amazing 🤩
Thanks 🤗
Epic!
Nice work space
Glad you like it 😁😁
Love the content.
Forget the build just live in the tent 😂
Open plan living with a lot of fresh air 😂😂
Truck looks small in there .i hope you moving it .and building the air up .they dont like being stood.great video guys
We will do soon. The batteries are dead atm. Thanks for watching 😁
@@RoadToOffGrid yes I know .but it best moving free up brakes .Air brakes don't like being stood .
Next week or so we will be doing all the maintenance so it will have only been sitting for about a month and a half.
@@RoadToOffGrid I hope you paint that chasis to .prevent rust before you build .
Of course! We’re going to restore the truck as best we can before doing the camper build. 👍👍
We're those tension bits in the right way?
I'd have put the pointed bits facing inwards so they don't puncture the tarp in the wind.
The instructions said to do it the way we did. But.SPOILER. In later episode we find some holes. But it is the correct way according to the manufacturer. We found a good solution though 😁
The sharp ends of the tensioners need to point downwards or you will wear holes in the fabric.
It might not look like it in the video but the tension rods are quite far from the marquee material. But we will keep an eye on it as the bad weather increases.
Great work,covered a lot in that video😂
It was a looooong two weeks!! 😂
Very punny! Well done 😂
Oh no! I missed the pun (embarrassed) ... I get it now 🤦🏼♀️ ~ Hayley
Hahaha your funny@@RoadToOffGrid
In the nicest possible way, you are crazy 😅 But maybe that's what this overall project needs in order to be a success.
Crazy is good !
Hi Hayley Pete well you just surprised me as I was reading who you are to read you was married what a surprise that was ,been following you from the beginning I don’t usually write but after reading you was married I had to ,you don’t look old enough lol I get great enjoyment watching you to work you are not afraid of having a go at what ever comes you way ,welding is probably the hardest to learn any one can as we call it weld but it has not penetrated we call it bird shit lol you both take care and look after each other,John 🇬🇧🌹🌹👀🤔🔥🤗🫢🤔🫠😁🙃
Thank you so much, really glad your enjoying the series 😁😁
You will have the local council round tomorrow asking you to,HAVE YOU GOT PLAYING PERMISSION TO BUILD THIS lol 😢😅🤔🙃
😂😂😅 I hope not!!
Well done just please move the truck into the middle 😂
😂😂😂 that was my dodgy parking job at the beginning. Now the batteries are dead!
With your design will the cab tilt? If it doesnt what will you do when / if you breakdown.
Yes, we will make sure we can still tilt the cab 👍
First end and that will come down, rip, we did a New Narrowboat and metal pole and tent lasted 2 weeks. We then built big fence post and roof trusses and covered it in plastic..Screwfix CAPITAL VALLEY PLASTICS LTD DAMP-PROOF MEMBRANE BLACK 1000GA 15M X 4M
Duck tape all the legs and corners and it won’t last
Will check that out thanks. Time will tell I suppose 🤞😁🫣
Loads of issues with the set up. First off is wind lift. You need a better system to hold the white marquee skin on. Far to many loose edges that will flap and then tear and destroy. The frame is not strong enough to take wind flex. You need more cross braces. Open ends work to funnel the wind and rain though. Also a good wind lifting point.
Time will tell 🤞😁
👍👍👍👍👍
Screws in end grain won't last long. You need to get some weatherprofing on that wood.
The wood is treated but I expect over time all wood rots and am I right in thinking into the grain like that is the weakest way? I have a few other idea 🧐
I wouldnt be happy if i was that boat owner, didn't leave any space for him. And those diagonal braces didn't need to be diagonal. An engineer said that? The posts are drilled into the floor so there they wont move to the side, could have just put horizontal braces at the top of the poles. Then you could have made some hangers too for tools and stuff. Great project nonetheless.
We got permission don’t worry 😁 thank you glad you like the project
Hi guys, I love your passion but it seems like a huge boat sail to collect the wind then take off bolts and all. Also unfortunately it’s coming into winter what about some roof vents to to let out excessive air that may work. Good luck you to Jon🇦🇺🥴🥴
Time will tell I suppose but roof vents is a good idea!
hmmmm one big storm and thst is air born and a goner......mother nature's will just pop them posts out like match sticks i think
How will it produce lift if both ends are wide open, offering no resistance? Where will the air get trapped in order to produce lift?
We might just leave the ends open or at least mostly open to let the air through. We’ll see 😁
Maybe anchor it to the lorry!
Not a bad idea! Maybe just when the weather is extra bad.
Please keep in mind that if you build the living box with an alcove, you will still have to tilt the driver's cab! The driver's cab swings out when tipped and takes up space. If the alcove is firmly attached to the driver's cab, you will no longer be able to access the engine!
I’m not sure if you’ve seen the previous episode but I explain how the design will work. It’s just a concept for now but the box on the back will lift up with legs and come off so I can still use the truck as a truck. So it’ll just need lifting up a bit to tilt the car forward when needed.
