Ed and his wife Birdie are farmers, and theirs is a humble, hard-working life. They work during the day and then relax at night with dinner and television. But Ed is bored with their routine.
While looking over his crops one day, Ed finds a brain growing on one of his trees, asking him to help. He leaves it alone at first, but he can't resist its call to be rescued and healed. So he sneaks out into the night to bring the brain into the barn and heal it. In doing so, he forges a connection to the brain, which soon grows more powerful and seductive, upending Ed's tidy, quiet life in unexpected ways.
Directed and written by Azwan, this offbeat horror-comedy takes its narrative structure from a situation that is often fertile ground for a domestic drama, where a man seeks more excitement than his current humdrum life and marriage currently give him. But with its quirky horror flourishes, deadpan performances and surreally fantastical elements, it might also be one of the most unique and memorable portrayals of a man's midlife crisis.
With such a cocktail of elements, it would be easy for the storytelling to go off the rails, but the writing carefully structures its characters and world, keeping a brisk, steady pace to build momentum and intrigue. Ed and Birdie's domestic life is stultifying and monotonous, especially in the conversation. The pair have that weathered demeanor that comes from years together, and there's comfort and some affection between them. But their routine is not exciting.
All that changes when Ed encounters the brain, which exerts a siren-like influence on him. At first, the brain looks like a giant walnut on a tree, emitting a startling cry for help. But then he begins to hear the brain's voice in his head, entreating him more urgently. When he heads out in the middle of the night and helps the brain, it eventually grows into a much more powerful entity, one that takes over Ed's mind. The effect infuses him with energy and good cheer -- and certain new abilities.
But it also arouses Birdie's suspicions and saps away the trust between the spouses, bringing up buried resentments. As Ed, actor E. James Ford is both taciturn and stoic as the farmer, but also compellingly loopy enough for the film's wilder flights of fantasy. As Birdie, actor Samantha Nugent provides a performance that balances the gently eccentric quirks of Birdie with the very real complexities of a wife trying to mask her impatience with her spouse and the long-simmering discontents between them. When it's revealed just why Ed is so drawn to the brain, it cracks open a deeper mystery of why this couple became so estranged and what they need to do to move forward.
Distinctive, funny and memorably quirky, FARMER ED is unafraid to really go for it in terms of eccentricity and weirdness, especially as Ed and Birdie barrel towards a big confrontation. But the biggest surprise is how well it resonates as an examination of why couples become distant and how easy it is to seek solace or relief elsewhere. The storytelling is a wild ride, and the conclusion is cheekily ironic, but it's also a wily, disquieting one because it's rooted in relatable emotions and all too human situations.
