its just ok. The most disappointing thing is that the Gathering is cropped to 16x9 vs the correct original 4:3 that the DVD of the B5 movies has which also looks far better.
I didn't like that one bit especially that all of the episodes have been remastered to there original aspect ratio yet both versions of The Gathering on DVD are in 1.33:1 so i don't know why they did that for..
This was my xmas gift from my wife to me, watched a few episodes and happy with them over the old dvd sets i had. sharper and brighter and it also takes up about 80% less shelf space :) i kept the dvd moviebox set i have as i knew these werent in the set. Glad to have an updated physical set though after so long.
B5 was framed in 16:9 but cropped to 4:3 for 1990s TV sets. It's cool they're prioritizing the 35mm footage, the cropped CGI is a non-issue for me... More extras would be nice, but the costs involving restoration make the $80 a bargin. And it's a nice compromise- 35mm film negs merged with the original CGI as that is very much a pain to deal with.
The clear case - this would let light through. UV wavelengths will affect the discs over time, but the paper backing should keep exposure very minimal.
Actually unlike the DVDs, I think the Blueray goes back to the 4:3 aspect ratio so the cgi scenes looks better. That’s how it was with the remastered version on max.
@AnotherScifiGuy coolness thanks for info! I may have gotten shows backwards, I thought these were filmed in 16.9 and matted to 4.3 when edited in the 90s. If the film negs were closer to 4.3 like Star Trek TNG was, that's cool. I've not seen the dvds in... way too long, and I hate it when 4.3 is cropped to 16.9 due to detail loss, credits text loss, foreheads and other details lost...
@@ShamrockParticle the issue is that the film footage was shot in 16:9, and cropped to 4:3 for the original task mission. The problem is with the cgi scenes and the composite scenes that have cgi and live action in them. The original elements have been lost, so they can’t re-render them in HD, only the standard definition versions in 4:3 exist. The dvd cropped those to 16:9 and it looks bad. So it’s a choice of do you want all of the live action in glorious 16:9 with bad cgi, or all of it in 4:3.
Okay, that makes sense. I'd rather see all 16:9 and lose out on some fx. I just saw screencap comparisons - the blu-ray is far better overall, and the dvd is worse, but yet seeing the right of Sinclair chopped out (with neon bulb gone) for the new release is a little annoying. Surprised they didn't matte the CGI, but the end result is truest to the original broadcast and that's fair...
The DVD's are a mess. Stretched, blurry, VHS quality. They have served us all well for many years, but regardless of the cheap presentation, this set should finally replace the old DVD's where it matters.... On screen. Still, WB could have at least put a bit of effort in.
From what I saw, I'd say "yes" but not as enthusiastically compared to TNG, which had more grain removal applied but not excessively so as to wreck scenes (remember the TOS movie releases on blu-ray around 2008?) Characters don't look like autons either so it's not heavily altered upscaled videotape.
I'm buying it when I get paid, with or without the missing extras, I must have Babylon 5 in HD, I don't buy DVD's anymore, only Blu-ray's, but since the extras are missing I guess I will have to buy the DVD sets as well (damn you WB, fans want the extras on Blu-ray, DVD's scratch to easily!) just hope we get all the B5 movies and Crusade on Blu-ray soon!
Hoping for a price drop in the near future. Even if bare bones the DVDs in many cases are failing. When I rewatched during quarantine in 2020 I discovered many of the discs from the original DVD sets just wouldn't play. Also a shame they didn't include the other movies.

@AnotherScifiGuy don't tell that to The Sisko! Okay, I love B5 for being its own universe, but I could watch Sisko yelling at everyone all day and be entertained. Great show and cast on that one as well...... (Oh, look, dots! I'm thinking again!.........)
I just popped in disc 1 for a quick peek. There was no AI upscaling for the CGI, it looks like it's loaded with artifacting akin to generic resize upscaling. The blue text shows more compression artifacting than expected as well. It also lacks grain masking to blend in with the live action, but that's okay. Also, to save on rendering time, the fx was done in 4:3 as the Amiga Video Toaster, trendsetting or not, had limitations for being new technology at an affordable level. The live action shots do look better, but even for 35mm they are very grainy. Not unlike how Advantix was. TNG has grainy stuff, but not as consistent. Dark unlit scenes are the worst but I'd swear they're using a higher ISO than usual for that much grain. TNG season 2 had some grainy stuff in "Contagion" but there's still more overt detail, but not by too much. It's still noticeable, but there was more grain cleanup applied. But it does look like film and not upscaled videotape or dvd footage. Still, color fidelity, along with the fx at original aspect ratio, are a big plus. It's a shame they didnt render new fx or keep them stretched. Even though pillarboxing renders this true to broadcast, which is a valid goal, this show was made for futureproofing.
Unfortunate... but what was released is definitely a worthy step-up. The fx don't even bother me at 4:3 or upscaled quality in motion, the freeze-frames only tell so much. It shouldn't feel more mature than today's shows, but the target demographic definitely isn't kids.

Not worth the money? I don't buy Blu-rays for the packaging or the menus, I buy them for the content quality. Unfortunately this review is entirely useless for that. It's like reviewing a car by talking about the garage. 😄
Well it is just a quick look at the box art. The episodes are the ones that were in max, and I watch it in max. It looks good and nice to have it back in 4:3.
The box art looks awesome, with or without the B5 station!
You should review space 1999 it is a better science fiction show in my opinion.😊
I do like Martin a lot.
Was tempted to get this...after this review... I can wait... The animated Movie has already dopped in price...BIG TIME!
Patience young Padawan...PATIENCE! ...but then I would ONLY buy this for the CONTENT! Not for Display. That is what the DVD set is For. It is my PRESCIOUS!
The dvd sets do look good
And I do think these will discount in a year or so.
@@AnotherScifiGuy On the other hand, sometimes they don't release enough of these and if you don't buy it right away it ends up skyrocketing in price. You never know with niche stuff like this... :/
Is the show all in 4:3 or only the CGI scenes?
All in 4:3
