Any Peruvian watching this, remember this man. Make him your president, instead of making oafs who have no care for lifting the Peruvian population out of poverty and into empowerment.

Im Peruvian and I also read "the other path" book, and I think is right if you put on value most of property, the people will trade with each other and also the banks or financial institutions for credit or money and you will have more money on the economy. You have also make it easier to create a formal enterprise.
@A AL. no, you are free to choose what you want, as long you don't impose that on others but if you live in socialism and don't want to be a slave of socialism you are illegal
It is no accident that governments make it difficult to obtain a business permit or enforce contracts, etc. The government and its politicians and bureaucrats (and the vested interests, e.g., long-established businesses that don't want to face competition, that bribe politicians) are the principal beneficiaries of this system. I wish the ILD would conduct a similar survey in the US. But as much as I appreciate what de Soto is doing, I'm not sure that his message will win out in the end. Here I think Schumpeter is right. Every one of these regulations is supported by a compelling narrative about a concerned and helpful government, which is trying to help the poor take back a little bit of the finite wealth which was misappropriated by the rich under a free market system. The tune is always the same, whether it's Peru or the US, and it almost always wins the day. Plus, no Western liberal is going to support a system whereby the poor are able to organically and through their own efforts attain a higher standard of living thereby deprive the Western liberal of the opportunity to play demigod.
Dear Dr. De Soto. Thank you for your extraordinary effort and success in discovering the power of the poor and making that power part of the solution for ages-old problem of exclusion of the poor from mainstream socio-economic and political life. Coming from a Communist past, that is exactly what my own country, Ethiopia needs to do - with little modifications though - to extricate masses from the trap of abject poverty. I'm not a great fan of capitalism, but I'm of liberty and democracy. Because, these two powerful concepts, I strongly believe, have the power of unleashing the power of the poor and liberating them from poverty, exclusion and marginalization by the elites. In my opinion, in my country, "public enemy number one" are the political elite, who claim to represent the poor and hence know what is best for the poor. The poor know what is best for them - all they need is liberty, freedom and democracy so as to make the laws work for them; not against them. Finally, I don't know how much you know about Ethiopia's socio-political and economic establishment, but I strongly believe there is so much you can do to help Ethiopia and Ethiopians to benefit from your repository of knowledge and hands-on experience. Do you think there is any possibility of extending your help in that front? Such help can begin with conducting experience sharing workshops, sharing documents (such as this video) with Ethiopian professionals, politicians and institutions working along similar lines. Thank you so much for this inspiring video packed with useful lessons!!!
What's even more amazing is that once these people are incorporated into the formal economy and given land rights, they use the money wisely and invest it to really build their businesses ... they don't waste it on stupid shit like the latest iphones or god knows what. Imagine how much better the results would be if they were also given free access to internet so that they could get free information via youtube and google about capitalism, marketing, trading, exporting etc.
Please make a follow up video 10-20-30 years later so we can see how much their lives have transformed from just doing those 3 things (give people land rights, make easy business laws and include them in the formal economy i.e give them credit / loans etc.).
I agree. I think this is a great idea and there is evidence for his approach, but the video is very biased and we need to follow up to see what actually changed. This guy has a wonderful book as well, The Mystery of Capital.
@duster I live in Peru and actually, after the first year of implementation of HDS´s programme, 340,000 new firms registered; Peru finally developed a middle class and we defeated the Shining Path because terrorist groups lost their appeal. Unfortunately, the following governments didn´t continue implementation of the reforms and we have now gone backwards :(
Any society that aims for equality over liberty ends up with neither. But a society that aims for freedom over equality ends up, as a happy accident, with a great deal of both.
@9:50 Great!! Score one for the poor folks! @12:50 What they are NOT is freeloaders. They are dying to work in any way possible. Compare this to a welfare generation bum. @30:24 As would anyone. These are the kinds of situations where a large group of disenfranchised people have every right to live off the land and at the very least be left alone. @39:35 Wealth fragmentation in itself is never a problem. In fact it is a very positive part of any monetary system. With today's digital technology, identification and titles are much easier to accomplish than before. @40:36 I truly hope one of the successful N Korean defectors translates this book and sneaks it into N Korea... @42:18 Then they ought to get off their fat behinds and look for them. @43:23 Sooooo... it IS possible!
Power of the Poor is the study of the Informal Economy, the peddlers, the underground economy. It is not the concern for the poor. It is more how convert the Informal in Formals, how to make them pay taxes, which should be beneficial for all. And the roots is part of education. not to trust government who act as oppressor, as rulers who only favor rich people. If the poor, who may not be poor, follow all government's rules, may not be able to keep their business.
The problem is the conversion of men and women into legal persons, or corporations. This is a form of slavery. All men and women have the same inalienable rights, but persons do not. We should be getting rid of legalization, when applied to men and women.
Inclusive capitalism regardless of economic/racial class/caste and legislating reforms that empower and include the greatest number of poor should alleviate or eliminate, given time, the worst social & economic ills in any nation. So what does the U.S.do? They give tax breaks to the wealthiest few with the expectation of business & job growth despite a dismal record with this strategy during Reagan's term. Increasing the economic gap between the top middle and lowest income earners. It gives me the feeling that this country is the richest banana republic in the world.
Thank you very much Hernando, for the reforms that helped my dear Huaycán and Perú.

Excellent video for the poor to take Action now!!
Excellent! Formalizing informales is the answer and revert that money to each region for development, incentivizing to go back and decentralizing Lima
Agree. As M. Friedman said, capitalism is a necessary condition for freedom.
