At that time Shillong was the capital of Assam. On 21st January 1972 the capital of Assam was shifted from Shillong to Dispur and Meghalaya was carved out of Assam.
I am really very proud of the authorities who have depicted the pictures of old Shillong. The reason behind this comment is that I was born and brought up in this beautiful place. My childhood day's were mostly spent in G.S.Road where my Father Late W.Kundandas, was a prominent business man and his shop stood right besides Flex shoe company owned by Mr. K.P.Das.I would feel glad to get more glimpses of old shopping centers located at G.S.Road including my Father's shop which was gutted by a devastating fire way back in 1967.Please do provide some more pictures of Old Shillong so that I can revive the sweet memories of the bygone era.

@@VikramjitSingh924 1940's 50s locals dont wear dhoti and turban any longer..I still have a photo of my great grand dad 1945. No dhoti. Trousers and turban only.. n ladies hardly put the cloak anymore.. and the carr is 1920's edwardian era design.. 1940s n 50s car are a little sophisticated
Everything has changed the environment, our thoughts and the people living in Shillong these days . Old is old but cannot become old. It will always remain in our heart also a beautiful remembrance.
A second copy should be given in the State Central Library.. for preservation and display.. But Thanks for making it available online too... We can witness our very won city's heritage...

A Heaven on earth kind of a place turned into living thrash now.. an unruly business hub.. overloaded with tourism without tourism etiquettes and civic sense..
When I first visit shillong at 1991 there were no crowd no rush, traffic where ever you want to park your car you can , everywhere people smiling and today only pipi popo everywhere nobody smiling, only money money
My great grandma says it was trendy for khasi ladies to wrap oneself like a parcel and walk in baby heels during that time.( just like those two ladies 1:19) now it looks funny, nobody wears like that anymore.. and I like how eveything has evolved.
I plan to shift there for my degree studies i hope it becomes a good experience it would be great if a local person guides me on which college to enter

Mom's grandpa wore Dhoti and that was probably the last era where turban and dhotis were worn by the people in Shillong.
This bring a very heartache n tears...wish can go back to childhood...wish to see my mother never grow old...
