What is that steam thing called that they use to straighten the hair? I would love to have one for my hair...haha. It looks so much less damaging than the flat iron.
it's also very painful, the metal is very very hot. the damp cloth is to stop the hair from burning and also steams it. essentially, do this yourself and the heat will travel up your hair to your scalp and cause etreme pain. Not to metion they also treat the hair with a wax-like substance to help the hair keep it's shape.

日本髪、というと、鬢付け油べっとり、というイメージがありますが、この映像を見る限りは鬢付け油は使ってないように見えますね。演劇・舞踊用の鬘は鬢付けは使わない、という事で宜しいでしょうか？「櫓のお七」「鷺娘」等では最後に髷をほどく場面がありますね。鬢付けで固めてあると、こうはいきませんね。あと、下に膨らんだ髱は「袋付き」というらしいですね。祭りの時代行列用の鬘も演劇・舞踊用と、ほぼ共通らしいですね。

it's rice paper thread called mottoi, they use it in different thicknesses to for making kanzashi or hair ornaments
