Your reaction is almost exactly the same as mine when I test drove one last year (perhaps I was less animated but the same in spirit!) That same day I part exchanged my E46 M3 for the 1M and never looked back.

As a serial BMW owner, I should love the 1M.
It has all the ingredients I need, a small 2 door coupe, a smooth straight 6 cylinder engine, rear wheel drive, and a sporty setup to the suspension.
Unfortunately, I find it one of the ugliest looking, dumpy, sad-eyed, things ever to come out of the brand.
I know fanboys will go on and on about hydraulic steering, limited numer production, blah blah, but that doesn't make it great.
It's no doubt exciting, but it's too snappy on the limit unless you are an exceptionally good driver, and the interior is a bit too dated now.
I would not swap my OG M2 for one, no matter how much more in value the 1M is worth, because the M2 is a better car in every single way. And it looks amazing.
The m2 is not better tho , not as special and definitely doesn’t feel as good and raw when u drive it. Drive both and then make that claim being unbiased

Define 'special' ?
They only made 450 of the 1M, so it is a lot more rare, but that doesn't make is more special, or indeed 'better', because dynamically it is not better, it's worse.
The OG M2 is still a very raw vehicle to drive.
No bias, just personal experience and knowledge from being in the motor trade.
@@DjNikGnashers no they actually made 6309. Not sure where you’re getting 450 ? For Australia only? And yes one of the reasons it’s more special it’s due to being more rare. Either way what I mean by special which most will agree that drive it or review it , is that the combination of everything especially the hydraulic steering , just works. It doesn’t feel dull like the newest heavier electronic steering cars, unless it’s a Porsche. I guess to each is own depending on your driving style. Me personally I like feeling connected to the road more and the m2 has not provided that more than the 1m. If it did, I would if been driving an m2.

The hydraulic steering people (most of whom have never driven one) make such a massive thing about, I found disappointing. It is a bit numb, and just because it's hydraulic doesn't automatically make it amazing. The electric steering in the 911 is much better for example, and the hydraulic steering in my E91 320d certainly wasn't 'amazing' lol.
There are levels, and something like a Lotus Elise most certainly does have amazing hydraulic steering, but the fact is, the 1M does not.
The steering in my OG M2 feels every bit as communicative as the steering in both of the 1M's I had the opportunity to drive.
The OG M2 feels a lot more stable, meaning I can exploit more of the cars performance, it is not snappy like the 1M, it rides better, it corners better, it is faster, and it looks MUCH better (in my opinion looks are subjective to the viewer obviously|).
I can not see any point where the 1M is 'better' than the OG M2, other than rarity.
I test drove a M2C recently and was disappointed by the steering. The engine felt great but not reminiscent of the old M cars. Felt like it just did it effortlessly but brought no joy.
