NGL, there is a special place in my heart for Crown Royal. Not saying that it's a favorite. Just that very early in my whiskey journey, my 21st birthday in fact, an uncle gifted me a bottle. I have made a point to try most of the releases since then, back in 1990. I imagine I will have to give this own a shot as well.
Nice! My brother gave me a bottle on my 21st birthday in 1982, it has the label on it dated 1971 and I’ve never opened it! I planned on having some when I got married or had children but at that time I wasn’t drinking anything. Now I’m into bourbon, whiskey, tequila but I just haven’t opened it!
@nickp5511 - out of curiosity, it might be fun to see how much that bottle is worth. I bought a bottle of single malt from Silent Stills in 2000 after I defended my Masters. I set it aside for when I had kids or got a house. I wasn't blessed with children and the houses where l live start at 1.4 mil, so I never got a house. I spend $180 on the bottle. Sometime mid Covid I did a googl3 search on that bottle and it was worth $1500. You never know.
The descriptor they're politely not reaching for is 'mediocre'... Naturally given generous assessments, but still straight and honest. And they don't tank the local store's sales on the product! These men are good people. I really like this channel. 👍 👏
If you guys see Crown Royal’s “Hand Selected Barrel” at 103 proof, take a chance and buy it. Best “sipper” from Crown that I’ve ever had. A bourbon lover’s style of Crown for sure. The crown blackberry is great too for cocktails.
My first whiskey was Crown Royal so I will always enjoy some. Have quite a few. Just got two single barrels so looking forward to trying that soon. Great show as always!
I drank Canadian whiskies almost exclusively for many years. The regular Crown Royal was my special occasion bottle. But, in 2019, that was changed when my wife and I toured the Jack Daniels’ distillery. Been chasing bourbon and rye whiskies since then. P.S. The best single malt I have had so far is from Cedar Ridge.

CR Noble Collection, Barley Edition is an extraordinary blend of whiskies distilled from 85% unmalted and 15% malted barley grains, aged for at least 5 years. CR did a 100% Barley edition as part of their Noble Collection which is actually quite good. I thought the Harvest Rye was horrible but their 16 Year Rye also a Noble Collection release was life changing for the price. FYI.
The only single malt I ever tried was from a craft distillery in MN (Tattersall) and it was the worst whiskey I've ever had. So bad I made everyone try it. This was a fun video! I'd be interested in having y'all do more single malts. I'm curious what they're supposed to taste like. The one I tried tasted like spoiled lettuce.
Crown Royal used to have (maybe it's still around, but I haven't seen it in years) a Hand-Selected Barrel edition, my all-time favorite whiskey. It is one of the few times when the second and third bottles lived up to the hype of the first time I tried something and loved it.
I bought a bottle a few weeks ago in Springfield MO for like ~ $50. Very happy I took a chance on it, it’s a great sipper. Definitely a bourbon lover’s type of Crown.
I tried several store pick barrels a while back and ended up getting a bottle of that over some well-regarded bourbon brands. My father was very happy with that gift.
I went to the New Riff distillery a few weeks ago and they gave us some of the single malt at the end of the tour. It was something special. The 6 year malted rye is also super underrated.
Being a Canadian, I have a soft spot for Crown Royal, especially their older releases (before flavored). Prices are always good. Don’t think I’d buy their single malt, there’s plenty of alternatives. Agree, it may be a good one to try for someone new to single malt. Don’t know why we’re being subjected to listening to Trenton talk about Canadian whiskey or single malt, he’s definitely the Chumley of the whiskey world, and definitely a proof hound rather than an expert.
At 55usd, you're getting it much cheaper than here in Canada - here, the 90CAD price tag really sours the already unexciting taste. You could get a truly good, 10-12yr single malt scotch for that, and crown's less expensive XO blend tastes much better.
One day Trenton is going to like a Crown Royal and want to buy another bottle.... I may have to try this one though we mainly use the flavoured versions for making various drinks such as jello shots etc. I enjoy the regular Crown Royal Apple and the new Blackberry is also quite interesting.
1 to try and include if you do a single malt blind - Stranahan's Blue Peak single malt. Given it's finished in Solera barrels, it might have a chance! Was gonna also suggest Woodford Reserve, but it's a straight malt, not a single malt.
I have always found CR to be very consistent with a decent flavor. There are a lot of whiskeys I like better but they are usually more expensive. I have had a couple of bottles of their Reserve which is very good. They have an XO finished in a cognac barrel that was decent as well. Both the Rye northern harvest and Noble Barley edition are fantastic. The 18Y XR is my favorite so far but not really worth the price but is a great choice once in a while.
When I tried that, the barmaid was so embarrassed about previous customers' negative reactions/disappointment, that she refused to accept any money for it: she was just trying to empty the bottle as fast as she could legally do so, without actually drain-pouring it... It was so underwhelming that I honestly cannot remember anything about how it smelled or tasted! I then asked for her recommendation (I think it was Mars Komagatake Nature of Shinshu Kohiganzakura, so in a whole better league) and bought one for me and one for her, so she didn't lose out. I think Northern Harvest Rye is regarded as a joke by almost everyone I know! (But then: so is Jim Murray!)
@@andrewbutler7681I was just starting my whisky journey at that time and ran out and bought a bottle. Am not a rye fan to this day. Pikesville would probably be my favorite but there are so many bourbons I like better why spend money on it. Just always assumed my palate was not developed enough to appreciate it.
I was told you can drop off the crown royal bags to some liquor stores. Crown Royal will donate the bag stuffed with goodies (cleaning supplies, toothpaste, singles) to deployed military.
Thanks guys, I enjoyed the video and the information. I'll pass on the CR though as I place this product in the same category as the Jim Beam White Label...
If you've never had the barley edition, winter wheat, 18 yr, hand select, or XO, give those a try. Fantastic whiskys imo. I never think it's fair to judge a brand based on its flavored expressions. I agree the 23 yr apple is not something I would ever buy, ha ha!
if you want some good crown royal the noble collection is amazing. hard to find now but can be found here and there sitting on the shelves. the 16 year rye is my favorite.
Sounds not too dissimilar from the standard Cedar Ridge single malt to me. The Cedar Ridge had a good bit of that toasted what I call cereal grain type of note to me but did have some fruit to it as well. Similar price point as well.
Up hear in Canada i keep hearing people rave about Shelterpoint Smokepoint Canadian whiskey. Apparently it's phenomenal. I tried this Crown Single Malt and think it's okay just like you guys describe it
Did somebody say single malt? I'd recommend Balcones if you want a big flavor bomb. Stranahans single malt solera cask is my go to regular And if you want a challenging single malt Stone Imperial cask strength, distilled from their Imperial stout it is a whiskey that you can disect for hours.
CR is usually a pass for me. It's not horrible or anything. The Orphan Barrels Entrapment is a 25yr CR Deluxe and it is awesome. But, yea 25yrs so there's that.
Finally popped the "bubble gum" cherry in a nosing. Achieved my first E.H. Taylor Small Batch for MSRP. Got it home, grabbed a Glen, let it sit half an hour, and there it was... Bubble gum in my Bourbon. COME ON BAND-AID AND PENCIL SHAVINGS!!😁
CR is a big (bad) deal to me in Ontario . . . meh . . . CR is always a "Pass" until it goes on sale -30% or so . For the same price range , I always go for Single Malt scotch at 15 yo age.

ain't nothing wrong with Crown, but it could be better. Their range can be okay for drinking, but is also perfectly fine for mixing...it's sad because their higher priced stuff just doesn't punch well at the price...except Black and Northern Harvest. Hand Selected is great, but not widely available. I also got a mystery bottle once from a crown employee and it was AMAZING. I was like where is this stuff??? I have hope someday...but as a Canadian (and one with Crown on their doorstep) I am disappointed in this single malt. Canada doesn't have much widely available Canadian malts and Crown had a chance...I agree it's good for beginners, good for bridging from other whisky's, but not at the price...I think part of the issue is the new oak barrels and NAS. Just hasn't had time to develop and I dunno I don't think I'd like something older in new oak regarding barley. It's a Crown...it tasted like Crown...being a malt that's not good.
I collect Crown Royal and I have 19 different flavors. I'm looking for Crown Royal XR Red. I have Blue, looking for red Someone please tell me where I can find it. I retire from the military and I'm having a CR party

Crown Royal and Canadian Club Classic are my two faves from my home, the land of the North.
That is so sad.
I like lot 40 rye and alberta premium cask strength personally, but canadian club 12 is a great cocktail whisky
My first whiskey was Crown Royal so I will always enjoy some. Have quite a few. Just got two single barrels so looking forward to trying that soon. Great show as always!
Crown Royal is a guilty pleasure. I will not turn my nose up at CR ever.

Northern Harvest top shelf, award winning. Black is also good
Another bottle that I won’t be purchasing 😂 Happy living through y’all with these Crown Royal offerings. They do make a nice velvet bag…
It’s a great single malt. Crown did a great job on this one. Already one of my favorites. That Crown Barrel select is a whole different level though.
lol at the broken glass sound effect when Trent threw the bag 😂
