Hey Nick How you doing? so happy you are helping us get the word out and help older folks like us to enjoy being outdoors and bending I have lost 50lbs in the last year and a half since I picked up this game and it gives us a way to continue to be healthy.

Me and my mom started this summer, and videos about discs were so full or jargon without being explained, so this video was so awesome thank you so much!
Thank you for saying that, my friend. Yes, it was so confusing when I was learning...or trying to learn when they would speak all that jargon. Sometimes it takes the fun out of it to be so technical when all we really want is a disc we can throw well!
I have been playing lots for the last 3.5 years. But I learned SO much in this video. Thanks, Nick! I wish I had watched this when I was first getting started. AWESOME.
Hi Nick. Another great video for we old-timers! I'm 68 and been playing for almost 2 years. Was introduced to the sport by my son, who has only been golfing for 3 years. I love the sport more than any of the dozen sports I have participated in, during my lifetime. I have a bad knee, bad hip, and weak arms. Not a very big person either. At least height wise!😂 I can only throw stand stills , and maybe a one step off the tee. I live in an upper Midwestern state, so we play in windy conditions a lot of the time. So I do carry a 171 gram SOL, and a 174 gram Buzzz SS, for this reason. 200 ft. is my MAX, on a good day. But here is something I wanted to share with you and others, that has really helped me to enjoy the game more, and actually improve my scores.(Still have some of that younger days competitiveness in me I guess.) 1) I have quit being concerned about my distance off the tee pad, and concentrated on hitting my lines, accuracy. 2) I have concentrated on accuracy on my up-shots from 150 ft.and in, and working my putting sweet spot out to 20 ft. These alone have improved my scores immensely, and made the game even MORE fun. Just thought I would share this with you.
Hey friend!! Thanks for sharing your story!! I think I might do an episode featuring stand-still throws. At our age, I'm not sure most of us can do much of a "run up" anyway! My max is probably 250 on a really good day...but most of the time, probably around 200. Are you throwing the Sol and the Buzzz off the tee?
@@NickArnette Yes. I actually throw the 174 gram Buzzz into a headwind, or left to right side wind, with a small amount of "anny". I seem to get a decent s curve or flex shot, whichever it would be, ha, doing this. I use the SOL of the tee, with a tailwind, or right to left side wind. I throw only RhBh. I use a 157 gram Jade for extreme up hill shots off the tee. My main 150 ft. and in approach disks are a 173gr. soft exo Link, stable, and a 173 gr. zero medium Pure, understable. Short downhill, NO wind or a tailwind, I might break out the 154 gr. Glitch. But it's very touchy. Mainly put with the old reliable P2 from circle one. Circle 2, the Link or Pure, depending on the wind. That's pretty much my "boring bag".
@@billmartinn9851 Yes, the Glitch is pretty touchy. Not many people mention that. I'm glad you agree. You must have pretty good arm speed to be throwing those weights for a standstill. Good on you, my friend!! I need to try the Sol!!

Glad you liked the video!! Yes, I want to do an episode about old dude health issues. I invited a guy with a disc golf exercise channel to do a video with me but so far he hasn't responded.
Hey Nick, hello from Melbourne Australia. I think you've really found a niche with "Old Dude Disc Golf" - great stuff so far. I'm 60 and just starting out - it's mid-winter here and tons of wind, so I tend to throw maybe 100-150 in the direction I'm aiming, plus another 50-100 in the direction the wind's blowing 😀 I probably need some discs with less glide, but the Glitch is soooo nice Thanks mate, and good luck with the channel
G'day mate! So nice to hear from someone down under!! Do discs fade in the opposite direction in Australia?!! Haha!! Yes, the Glitch is such a fun disc to have around. Today when I was playing a passerby wanted to try a throw. I handed her the Glitch and she loved it!! If it's pretty windy, you might do well with just mid-ranges. Try a Roc3, a Roc, or a Buzzz. They will handle the wind pretty well. Thanks a million for reaching out!!
What perfect timing. I'm an old dude who's just decided to give disc golf a try. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I feel like I just got six months worth of education in this video alone. Please keep 'em coming.

This was a great Video that cleared up a bit of fog for me. I'm 66 and have a grandson that has a couple disks and two DG courses nearby. The first time I threw one of his discs, I was like WTF!!! How can one throw these damn things.... it's nuts compared to the frisbees I used to throw as a kid. Anyway a couple months later and I'm able to throw my Diamond out about 275' on any hole thats flat to downhill. Still not scoring the best yet, but for how much I'm on the courses, about 3 times a week, I'm getting there. Played yesterday a full 18 holes for the 1st ti e for score and was +20. Had 4 pars and 7 out-of-bounds. It's amazing how putting a disc o-o-b's can blowup a hole score . Thanks for a great video, I'm loving the game so far....
That's awesome. Sounds like you're really catching on quickly! If you're throwing a Diamon that far already, you might want to try a Jade. Same manufacturer. It's a 9-speed. It flies a little straiter than a Diamond. I still use my Diamond a lot though.
Yes!! I'm hoping to get there soon!! Glad you liked the info!! It's stuff that took me a long time to learn so I was glad to share it all in one place!
Lots of good info Nick. Finally got to see you throw a few discs. I understand why you like the Diamond as a driver. It does not take a lot of power or speed to get some distance with it. Let's see how far you can throw it. Definitely a little hyzer on that baby.
I threw the Diamond on a hyzer flip in my first video. I have had my longest throw with one one of my Diamonds that's super flippy now because it's so beaten in! I'm on my second Diamond now.
Hi Nick, I appreciated your comments about throwing lower weight discs! I did an experiment with 3 Leopard discs. 1: a Leopard pro plastic at 174, 2: a base plastic Leopard at 151 and 3: a Leopard3 base plastic at 151. Overall I found I could throw the lighter discs in base plastics farther than the heavier disc in the pro plastic. I did get slightly greater distance with the Leopard3 with numbers 7, 5, -2, 1. Thanks again!
I'm glad you agree with the lightweight. I played with a senior player last week with a fast arm who has been playing 40 years....he still throws lightweight discs and he can control them very well. Those Leos are great discs!!
Good call on plastics. As you say, the differences can be stark ! Appreciate what you are doing with content. May be worthwhile mentioning that flight numbers are brand subjective and within brands are relative. For instance a 5 glide in Innova is a comparison to other discs in the line-up which have the same speed. A 5 glide is different between a 7 speed and a 10 speed. I try to ask friends or try a friend's disc whenever considering buying a new disc. If I can't try one or ask a friend then I look to video reviews, as many as I can watch ! You did a nice comparison on Blizzard v. DX !
Such a great point that flight numbers are suggestive. I will be sure and mention that in an upcoming video. Thanks for your helpful comments!! No matter what we know about discs, every one of them is a bit of a mystery with a personality of its own!! haha!!
@@beerowjr I used an app called Ace Trace. It’s only a phone app so I had to use it on my iPhone which made it difficult to use on such a small screen. I found it very difficult to use so I stopped using it after a few videos. It’s not cheap $45 and it’s a subscription so it’s only good for a year.
1 tip for beginners is to throw over stable disc's for easy distance especially since they are more forgiving on throwing angle and you can throw them in the wind you must throw over stable discs with anhyser it was the disc that taught me how to throw hyser throws. So nick go out and throw an overstable disc with anhyser and I know you will love that shot!. An over stable disc is way more forgiving.
Thanks so much, Kal! I have a well-beat in Diamond I used for hyzer flips, and I love it. I'm not able to hyzer flip most of my discs. I think my arm is too slow.
@@NickArnette now you are misunderstanding, we are not trying to throw an overstable disc to do a hyser flip we are just trying to keep it from flipping over to quickly so we throw the disc with an anhyser and it will flatten out, then come back hard at the end. Very easy to control and easy to throw for distance. My Arm speed is very slow but I do throw with a fore hand and so I create a lot of spin which allows my discs to fly further. Its all in the wrist. I can throw 200 ft sitting in a chair. And I learned that throwing from a chair showed me that I didn't need high arm speed to throw far I just needed spin. and that came from our guy Robbie C by doing this from a chair gave me confidence that I can throw pretty far. Over stable discs are easier to throw then under stable trust me.
Great Video! Love the Glitch too! Would you happen to have any recommendations for websites that sell lightweight discs? I have been having trouble finding them in the 150g range lately.
Yes, lightweight discs are not easy to find. They sell out right away. I use Discovering the World a lot, and also Infinite Discs, and DiscStore.com. Still, lots of the lighter versions are sold out. It shows there's a demand for them.
Mr. Old Dude, I'm really enjoying your videos. Keep 'em come! In the meantime, when you say you're throwing them well, what's your distance? I'm about to turn 62. I've played off/on for 30years so I have decades of bad habits. My max distance is between 240-270. Any suggestions? Also, how can I determine what arm speed is needed for a proper flight? Thanks for doing all this!!
My distance seems to be going down...even from a year ago. I think I'm just aging. My drives are in the 225 ft range on average I'd say. Determining arm speed is basically trial and error. If I can't throw a disc properly, I know it's too fast for me if I'm giving it all I've got. I don't like to try too hard to make a disc fly properly so I don't put too much strain on my arms and shoulders. I've had a tennis elbow issue so I need to take it easy. 240-270 is very respectable. If you want to work on throwing even farther, I'd just watch some of those disc golf coaching channels that offer tips for throwing better. I'll be posting a video about that in the future. I'm honored that a veteran like you would be watching my video!! Thanks so much!!
Proper flight will depend on whether you tilt your disc Hyser or anhyser. nose up or nose down so this will be all about practice and learning the disc's you throw! And what angles work for your throw, I throw different then anyone else so I practice with the disc's I use Until I figure out how each one flies I throw 100 disc's almost every day But I throw the same 5 or 6 disc's over and over. Eventually you will learn What disc does what with your throw.
Next vid oughta be why flight numbers don't matter. Disc wear, inconsistent runs, plastics, manufacturer inconsistency and marketing to start. Try a 135 Blizzard boss you'll get a new personal distance record. I got over 600' flat! in the rockies with them.
Thanks for your comments. That's a good point about flight numbers. I'll be sure an mention it in upcoming videos. Blizzard Boss. Wow!! Very tempting to get one. I have had really bad luck throwing Blizzard plastic. I've tried a Blizzard Wraith and Beast, both were super overstable. Could not get them to flatten out...but I could in other plastics.
@@NickArnette oh yes, I one hundred percent agree that most blizzard sucks. Wildly inaccurate and unreliable. The boss is the exception. Not the ape, destroyer, wraith, dominator or anything else. Just make sure the dome has a nice gradual slope to it, not some abrupt angle one inch in. Thanks for responding and for the good vibes keep the frisbees flying my friend
Disc numbers are different for each person depending on how fast you can throw and how fast you spin them at that speed... BIGGEST piece of advice I can give... (throwing Backhand where you "Pull" the disc toward your throwing arm, rather than Forehand (or sidearm) which is like throwing a ball). ... Bring your forearm UP in front of you... level with your shoulders, elbow and wrist horizontal... Now saw the disc slowly back and forth like your trying to cut your own chest. Look straight ahead... Don't look at the target... that should be away to your side... but we're not throwing the disc right now... just look straight ahead... (You can now look down as you pull that disc back and forth in front of your chest... Look at it... it should be FLAT with the horizon)... That is how to throw it Flat... not tipped on an angle that will cause the disc to fly in the direction you tip it... You should nearly touch your chest when it's at the peck closest to your throwing arm... but the disc should be travelling back and forth in a STRAIGHT line... NOT in a curve around you. Don't bother reaching right back... start level with your back shoulder, and end up with your throwing arm straight out to the side (so out to the right if your right handed) aiming at the target. Do that action a LOT.... don't throw the disc... just do that action... back and forth... flat disc... travelling in a straight line... Your arm should be behaving like a trebuchet.. From a right angle, to a tight angle then straightening out after it has passed your throwing arm shoulder. The disc should be resting on your pointing finger knuckle and tucked up hard under your thumb base muscle... (Apparently it's the Thenar... You can google "Hand Surface Anatomy") When you have done that a LOT... try this... Don't grip extremely hard... about as hard as a good handshake (not a 'I don't want to hurt you mum' soft handshake)... Now try pulling across at the same slow speed as above... BUT.... as it almost hits your peck... accelerate hard. Don't let it go... let it pull out of your hand as your arm straightens out. Have you ever flicked someone with a towel or scarf... You don't yank your arm at full speed from behind all the way to the front, you end up doing a flick at the end... Disc golf is "Almost" the same... except your not pulling your hand back at the end of the whip... (eventually you turn it away behind you a little instead). Background... At 55 I took up Disc Golf 2.5 years ago but... I'm sort of fit... Ex trail bike rider, took up downhill MTB in 2019... but otherwise lazy az. I throw heavy discs, 170g+... I can hit 330ft (100m) on a good day and 300ft most of the time... I throw 10-13 speed... BUT... disc numbers are different for everyone... I throw backhand 95% as my forearm tweaks my left side back muscles with any real effort. I can throw an Innova Beast (10, 5, -2, 2) at my max... 330ft. I can throw an Innova Leopard (6, 5, -2, 1) at 300ft with slightly less effort... I can throw my Latitude 64 Diamond (8, 6, -3, 1) OVER 330ft in the right conditions... but the result can be so varied, and often ends in a roller that I have to be careful.. but I'm giving it max effort.. I can back off and throw it soft, and have it do a nice S.. but I use it to go round right hand corners (I'm a back hand right hander) so the speed number matters... but what I find almost as important (if not moreso) is that the disc actually FITS your hand comfortably when throwing at the speed you want to throw it at.

Lightweight fission plastic MVP/Axiom discs are great. More controllable than other lightweight discs.
I am 62 and can throw 300 ft but more often around 250. I throw fore hand flick only.
Eventually you will learn What disc does what with your throw.
and the flight numbers are subjective slightly based on companies.
Curious what your max distance is being a senior?
I haven't measured in a long time, but it was just a little over 300. Most of my drives are probably in the 225-250 range.
You can google "Hand Surface Anatomy")
When you have done that a LOT...
I can back off and throw it soft, and have it do a nice S.. but I use it to go round right hand corners (I'm a back hand right hander)
so the speed number matters... but what I find almost as important (if not moreso) is that the disc actually FITS your hand comfortably when throwing at the speed you want to throw it at.
Wow! Thanks for your thorough and helpful comment! If you happen to come to the LA area, I would love to meet you and play a round of DG with you...do an episode of Old Dude Disc Golf with you. You have a lot of good things to share! I also go to Denver several times a year, so that's also an option if you're in that area. Thanks again for your helpful comment!
@@NickArnette I would so love to... but I'm a little south of LA... New Zealand.
I spent a day in LA (Delayed flight). Hilight of my day was having the dude in the turban on rollerblades playing guitar scoot by. (Even famous in NZ... and old re-runs of White men can't jump etc).
If you ever make it to Wellington New Zealand I'll talk your ear off. I'm only 55 so still about 30 years before I get old.... right?
I mean Whittier??
Yes, Whittier. I used to play there every week. I don't play it much anymore. Need to get back there!
@@NickArnette too many gopher holes
@@WhiplashJoe I stepped in a go for a gopher hole at Kenneth Hahn and tweaked my back. It’s still hurts.
Yeah, KH always made my ankles sore... can never do 18 holes there.
Cerritos?!
Cerritos isn't in this one. It's the best course around here for someone's very first round of DG.
