It's a power play. Famin is pushing Renault to spend the cash. Wouldn't be surprised if Renault go to Yamaha hand in hat saying "Please, my son. He's very sick." Holds up engine.
Oooops 16:30 MARIO Andretti certainly NOT Michael Andretti.
Plenty engines around to rebrand. So they can use the savings to get better Staff for the F1 Team.

Meanwhile, Andretti is not allowed because they would be PU customer...and "not competitive." What a joke!
They also have the BALLS to say that Andretti and Cadillac aren't "heavy names" to bring. Andretti, named after an F1 champion and is a powerhouse at Indy, and Cadillac, a centenary company and probably the largest luxury car brand in all of America, while also racing at Le Mans...
Andretti were not allowed in because they don't bring anything to the table. Or not much. That was the right call. Formula 1 needs to expand it's reach with new members. Andretti does not do that.

F1 will tell Andretti no, but tell Alpine that they will make other teams give them an engine… Weird organization.
Ironically, Renault may have been motivated to continue the 2026 engine project if they’d had a customer team like Andretti (until GM’s ready in 2028) to at least somewhat justify the investment.

Agree completely, and you gave me an idea. Do you think at least part of Alpine's motive for publicly discussing a possible customer engine deal could actually be a ploy to get dispensation from the development freeze? Maybe the other engine manufacturers would rather grant Renault a mulligan than supply Alpine F1 with power units.
Lifting the engine freeze because they suck would be even more of a joke.

This is a classic show of French incompetence. Bruno Famin was in charge of the engine department of Renault in 2022, its all his fault and yet he blames the company for the bad engine. The interim Team principle and at the first time of asking the car was about +/-10 kg's over weight. It's very clear that he doesn't know what he is doing and instead of firing smart, competent & valuable staff, Renault should fire him. Bruno is and incompetent tyrant.
He seems like another Rossi. Bruno makes criticisms like "Ocon is too impulsive" while having a temper tantrum on national TV. Everyone is supposed to have a cool head except him. Get him and everyone like him out of the sport.
Imagine if Alpine can't get any engine deal sorted and is then forced by the FIA to use Renault engines since they're the manufacturer supplying the least amount of teams...
There's rules in place requiring existing engine suppliers to supply them.
Rip. I'm a lifelong fan of renault even though they have been ASS. Those 2 titles with Nando was just incredible.

Andretti probably doesn't have the money to buy an overpriced ass team. Not worth it tbh
A piece of turd can't sell for money no matter how hard you try. Andretti already has a better facility and staff than alpine.
Given the FIA alongside F1 telling Andretti to buy a team out, and the upcoming Concorde agreement renewal apparently to restrict the number of teams to 10, either Alpine (or any other team) sells to Andretti or pulls out entirely and Andretti fill the void

if they can come up with a billion dollars
No they only need 750 million
At least for me, it makes sense what Bruno is doing. My guess is that they are looking at the engine regulations, their current technology, and design and have found that they will not be able to compete against other engine manufacturers. So, from a business standpoint, it makes sense to change your supplier to something more competitive while reducing the expenses of building an engine. Not to mention, Alpine becoming a customer team does not only give Honda and Aston an entry way, but also Cadillac/GM an entry to F1 too. I know losing the works team status is a big deal but it's a bigger deal not making the necessary changes to succeed.
I think you are reading too much into it. To me, it's more likely Renault putting pressure onto the FIA to allow them to adjust their engines, as they have been denied recently.
Bingo. I think Renault are going to really go inn on the next regs. Wouldn't be surprised if they don't just give up and do the expensive option of going to yamaha and saying. "Fix? Please!!! You fix? Here money."

"Stuff it" would be "va t'faire" (with the follow up being voluntarily left blank) in my book ;)
I don’t see how a works team that produces it’s own engine can just say “our engine sucks, daddy FIA make them give us one of their good engines” and then the other guys are just forced to comply. If your engine is terrible then figure it out.
All the while blocking a team from entering who seem to be very dedicated and ambitious.
There’s some weird stuff going at Alpine right now, this just continues to highlight that. I mean they are a Renault brand after all, so abandoning their parent company’s engines is just plain odd.
Here's an upvote for that genius intro. Too good!

When I read the title I instantly sang the title in my head and i was not dissapointed when u came up the ladder
Gasly must be talking to Audi now. Alpine wouldn’t get rid of gasly if deal goes through unless they want Doohan to be their main driver
What I don’t understand is why Renault is still hanging on to Bruno Famin. The guy is the epitome of incompetence. They decided to replace Otmar with a downgrade. I will not be surprised if you will hear more excuses from this guy. It was actually good for Ocon to leave a toxic environment.
Dumping your engine is pretty embarrassing for a works team. They can sell the team for a billion dollars and go focus on WEC or something instead.
Alpine can't stop catching L's across Motorsport
Only Renault would fire themselves 🤦♂️
If there is any sign they should just sell the team to Andretti, it is this.
I dont know what the lmdh alpine blowing up have to do with them changing their engine. the alpine lmdh uses the notoriously unreliable mecachrome used in F2, and have nothing to do with renault.
edit: the hybrid system is also a spec unit from williams
You're forgetting the part where Alpine allocated€150 million to be spent modifying and redeveloping the V36 specifically for their hypercar.
Nico Lapierre: "It has been a lot of work to adapt this engine to endurance racing. The structure is the same, but everything inside has been changed and one of the strengths of Alpine, they have a lot of engine bench in Viry-Châtillon, and I can assure you that the engine was running a lot on the bench."
“The engine control system is also fully specific to the A424 and entirely developed and calibrated by Alpine Racing in Viry"
Claiming they had nothing to do with the engine is just cope. They wanted to save money by modifying and engine instead of building it from scratch and it blew up in their face.
Again €150 budget in the first 12 months alone.
I love how Red Bull publicly blew up their relationship with Renault, then whined to the FIA that another engine manufacturer has to be forced to supply them, and now has decided not to supply any other customer teams...classic RB
Not surprised: 2015 anyone? Lotus ditched their Renault engines into Mercedes while undergoing a transitional Renault Management?
they werent owned by renault at that point, they just switched suppliers
There was talk of Alpine considering dropping the '26 Renault power unit and becoming a customer team weeks before Le Mans. After already having invested a lot of time and money in to the power unit.
Only possibility will be Cadillac not Ford … a bit of complicated management structure I suppose…😊😅😅
A candidate for a possible engine manufacturer I’d like to see: Nissan
1. They’re part of the same alliance (Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi)
2. Nissan has a presence in motorsport through Nismo, participating in Super GT and Formula E
3. Immediate rivalry with fellow Japanese automaker Honda, who will be supplying engines for Aston-Martin in 2026
I could see merc giving alpine their engines if they put Mick in their car for the next few years. Just a thought
@LawVS that intro was mint. 10/10 instant banger. P1. 🎉. Seriously though, very clever.
That's what I've been saying....If Tsunoda comes to Alpine and brings in a Honda engine deal....it would be Alpine-Honda....

Remember the whole "You need to be a works team to be competitive," thing?
Renault is proving that false.
The seasone finale of the Alpine will be when Bruno fires Bruno. 🎉
There will be no Renault or Alpine in F1 in 2026. Good riddance, too. Absolute waste of time.
The engine development freeze was ahuge mistake. Nowadays if you come out the gate with an underperforming engine, you can kiss goodbye any chance at being competitive until the regulations change.
??? Apparently, you don’t understand the engine development freeze. Who do you think would’ve been coming out of the gate with an underperforming engine? Why do you think that the manufacturers who have shown interest in F1 in recent years weren’t looking to enter until 2026?
The development freeze has only ever applied from partway through 2022 until the end of 2025.
The only reason it exists is to give teams a chance to work on the 2026 engine without having to keep up with a development race with the current engines.
F1 had already reached the point where no new engine manufacturer was going to join, specifically because it’s a given that when you first enter into F1, your engine isn’t going to be competitive at first, and no manufacturer was going to put in the time and money into developing an engine when the engine regulation change on the horizon - it would have been too much investment into something that was just going to get scrapped by the time it had a chance of being successful.

It's taken them a long time to get here, but being a customer team is now working okay for McLaren.
Both Mercedes and Ferrari will be supplying one fewer team than they currently are in 2026, so could potentially supply Alpine.
But a Honda customer deal does seem to make a lot more sense.
Am I the only one to read the title with the melody of REM?
if Renault does not want to leave, then I don't think they will. If Alpine goes to FIA saying they don't have an engine, the FIA would almost certainly ask Renault to supply them first. After all honda and audi might only have a single team they'd be supplying but Renault would be at 0, if Renault wants to stay and no oter team wants Alpine then I don't think the FIA will be in a hurry to save them just because it would make Bruno happier.
Imagine if Alpine decides to be a customer -- of a GM works team. GM makes most of the engines for Indy between its own core works operation, plus Chevrolet. Plus with Ford climbing in behind Red Bull, GM must be feeling a bit left out in the cold right now.
There is no global manufacturer as experienced with open wheel engines as GM, they can probably figure out the F1 specs pretty easily and they have decades of experience at a parallel racing circuit. They have nearly infinite resources for design and testing at any rate, and more money and design expertise in their little finger than Renault has in their entire body.
Hell, GM could simply _buy Renualt_ if they really wanted to.

The rules state that in picking a manufacturer to supply a team without a deal, the first one to be chosen will be the one which is supplying the fewest competitors.
For 2026 - with Ferrari supplying Haas and Red Bull providing RB with power units - that leaves Audi and Honda as the only manufacturers delivering engines to one team.

Honda benefitted since 2019 from gathering data from 4 instead of 2 cars when it came to engine development (up until the engine freeze). Surely they would be interested in doubling their cars for 2026. Honda as a carmaker also obviously sees no conflict of interest with their Aston partnership, as they sell roadcars for different audiences (bar the NSX). The same could be said about Alpine, although Honda and Renault are rivals for road cars. Renault buying F1 engines from one of their competitors does seem somewhat embarrasing.

Alpine-Honda with Gasly and Tsunoda would be incredible.
Why do you claim that the Aston Martin Honda unit will be brand-new and not the current Redbull one? This is the opposite of what the truth is, the Red Bull unit will be brand-new and the Honda unit in the Aston Martin will be an upgrade of the existing unit
Oscar moving to McLaren was probably a career saving move.

I only started watching this year but have seen clips of Alonso with the bright yellow and blue, why isnt Renault a team anymore?
They are they were just renamed to Alpine.
Alpine is just an old sports car brand of Renault's and when the company relaunched the brand with some new retro-modern models, they also renamed/rebranded the F1 team. But nothing else really changed. It's still Renault's Enstone team, just painted blue.
one thing i see many youtubers wrongly assuming is that the wec car has a renault/alpine engine, it is actually a V6 mechachrome engine the same company famous for exploding engines in f2 machinery
Crazy stuff. And poor Drugovich.
I thought maybe Aston might get a say in this if Alpine wants to snuggle up with Honda, and since Drugovich has been a reserve for what feels like forever, it should be time to either give him a seat, because he looked capable in the FPs, or let him loose.
But yeah, with talks of Mick coming back, plus Doohan maybe being prepped, talks of Yuki reuniting with Pierre, Fernando staying, uncertainty with Lance, but nobody is mentioning Drugovich, unless he already left and i missed that part.
Drugovich better in IMSA with Cadillac than in Aston Martin. Unless Strollman is transfered into WEC team in 2025 (which we know it'll never happen).
It sounds insane, but no one outside of existing F1 fans know who Alpine is let alone that they’re owned by Renault. Developing an engine is incredibly expensive. So, they could both save and make much more profit by buying a good, existing engine.
Alpine's biggest problem is Bruno Famin. He's shown he's not a great team leader. He needs replacing.
I wonder how nissan would feel about a team with the name of a company they are associated with being powered by a rival

Le Mans reminded me of the 1980s with the exploding engines because of the turbos. But even they didn't tend to have the fireworks display like the one Alpine had! 🏎️🎇
(Edit: I have been given the F1 video of 10 best Alonso _at Renault_ moments as a recommendation. The three-year-old video... Coincidence? I think not! 😂)
Mercedes are ok but I doubt they will sell it to them, Ferrari kinda suck, Honda likely won't supply and Redbull I don't think will nail it. I think a large portion of the problem with Renault's power unit is in large part purely a lack of investment and development. There is a bit of history there and I think a good case for Renault to rebound with the new regulations with proper investment, since F1 is a much bigger deal now then it was in 2014.
Ocon made a great decision leaving Alpine ASAP
