Anyways, just to let you know I have started my first role as a Trainee QS and would like to let you know that your videos (and the advice you gave me in your replies) have been instrumental to me. Thank you 👍 Funnily enough I started my career as a QS (6 years) and moved into Project Management. I’d say that’s the easier switch but it has a lot to do with the age of when you make the switch or your employers perspective on whether they think you’re up to it. Timing is also critical i.e. if we’re in a boom period QS are normally hard to come by so more companies are prepared to train, etc. I’ve bookmarked doing a video on why I made the change which will cover some some of this. I’ll give some thought on the types of QS. There definitely are different types but potentially a good discussion / education point might be the different methodologies / techniques they use.

Not saying that Quantity surveyors are not people persons. Would you suggest sticking it out for 3/4 years and then changing over? I have one year down in a PQS firm. Thanks.
Hi James, As you’re in the industry make sure you take more than just my opinion before drawing your own conclusions as we’re all different and there’s no right or wrong answer just what’s right for you. One thing you’ve said that stands out is the people person aspect. If you did stick out being a QS for the long term and had any ambitions to do something yourself business wise long term I think this can play in your favour. Or even in a larger company you could get more involved in the bidding side of things, meeting clients, etc. Which needs more of those skills. This is just a personal opinion but I would probably try and stay in the role for 3 years before looking to move. I think it hugely helps your cv and by then you’ve probably got a couple of projects under your belt that you can talk about their life cycles from in detail. It’s hard to see the future but form my own perspective and seeing juniors grow you’ll just come across as a completely different candidate in how your cv reads but more importantly when you’re in an interview as well. The flip side is more if you’re unhappy and it’s making you miserable then there’s absolutely no harm it starting to look and apply now. No point putting yourself through unnecessary stress imo.
