    Luv 2 Drivelapse? - / takemytripdotcom "Like" for updates & great travel ideas
    This drive is a round-trip, beginning and ending in Ouray, Colorado. It follows US Highway 550, the Million Dollar Highway, south, over Red Mountain Pass to Silverton, then returns via the same route.
    At first I was disappointed that it was raining in Ouray and Silverton, but the weather was actually quite amazing. Clouds hung low over the mountain peaks, creating a foreboding mood amongst the fall colors in early October. At the pass, above 11,000 feet, it was pouring the snow, creating a beautiful scene.
    You'll have to put up with my wiper blades, but I hope you can enjoy the beauty of this drive, on a not-so-perfect day.

    I grew up in Ouray, the town at beginning and end of this video, I learned how to drive on this road (winter and summer), I took my driver's test on this road in February...my father worked at the mine at the 5:50 mark. One of my classmates lives in Silverton, and commutes to Ouray, every day, winter and summer, on this road. There is one avalanche per mile on this road - definitely dangerous - this is the main north-south route on the western side of Colorado; as such, semis drive this road when it's open in the winter. This road isn't for the faint of heart, as you can see - some flatlanders have literally frozen in the middle of the road, unable to drive another foot on this road - but it's well worth the trip.
    Wherever my family is, there also is my heart, but my soul remains in those mountains.

    Through the rain and the snow, it was still an excellent looking video and an amazing ride. Everything about the ride was great. Glad I was able to view it. Thanx for posting this.

    I can't tell you how many videos of I have watched of this drive either coming or going, but this one has a more interesting look with the wet pavement and sped up. And then you get to see it change to snow making it even more scary. I also like that you show going in both directions. This may be my favorite Million Dollar Highway drive video.

    Can we all agree that 19:45 is the scariest part and probably the best scenery? I think it's because you have that big tall mountain on one side and huge dropoff on the other side with those crazy winding curves. I think this may be where the photo was taken of the original road?

    Beautiful! I always wondered what driving in snow might be like, and I felt that gave me a taste (the last time I saw snow was in 91 and I've never driven in it). The clouds lifting on the mountains and rain reminded me of a vacation where we had to get off of the mountain where we'd been camping (North Carolina). It was the first time I'd ever encountered 10 foot visibilities while driving - and we crossed a couple of bridges just before they were closed because of flooding.

      If I remember correctly, it was the first week of October. The aspens are still colorful -- they usually lose their leaves by the first week of October, so I don't think it was any later than that. I think you could run into just about anything by mid-October :)

    is this speed real? specially for the truck, as I see he is using brakes but how long can he use brakes. it seems that any way you drive from Colorado it is downhill. this does not seem to be a road for heavy trucks.

    • @takemytrip
      @takemytrip  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's sped-up, probably about 400% to real time.

    • @ex-navyspook
      @ex-navyspook 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I grew up in Ouray, and it wasn't unusual to see a trucker, unfamiliar with the road, sitting near the bottom of the "hill," smoking a cigarette, with two or three fire extinguishers around them; the smell of smoking brakes wasn't unusual either. It's the main north-south route in Western Colorado, so there's really not any other way to go, so quite a few trucks do brave this road, winter and summer. On the OTHER side of Silverton (the town at the midpoint in this video), there are two other passes, the Coal Bank, and Molas, which are almost as bad.
      There aren't as many accidents on the road as you might think, though; people definitely bring their "A" game while driving it.

    awesome. how scared were you?

    • @takemytrip
      @takemytrip  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not scared. Even though it was pouring the snow, I was pretty sure it had been warm enough that it wouldn't stick to the road... much. And there were road crews salting and scraping the road, so I was pretty sure it would stay passable. I learned to drive on snowy roads when I was a teenager, so I'm a little better at it than the average Floridian :)

    • @herodotus7
      @herodotus7 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      takemytripdotcom Yeah, I am from the deep South, although I lived for a about four years in West Texas and spent some free time in New Mexico and southern Colorado. So I have very little experience in the snow.
      I am not totally comfortable driving in the mountains, even if there isn't a cloud in the sky. I am probably more comfortable in the mountains at night when you can see beyond what is immediately in front of you.

    • @bleeder228

      Doubt he was drunk, probably just unsure of the road. There are only 3 spots on that pass that require a truck to encroach on the oncoming lane and none of those were the places where he was in the video.

      Snow removal and road maintenance is easier without guardrails, and they'd just get taken out by the rocks and avalanches (one avalanche, basically, per mile...I didn't drive it if I didn't have to in the winter...EVER).
