  • Cancer is only a disease, and it does not and should not define you. It should only empower you, make you feel that you are strong enough to fight any adversity and bloom.
These are the thoughts of Prakshi Saraswat, who was able to beat cancer with her tenacity and fight off the social stigma she has to face as a woman cancer survivor.
Prakshi was diagnosed with Endometrial cancer in November 2020, a day before her 30th birthday. It was preceded by a history of heavy bleeding which was often brushed off as normal and nothing worrisome. While going through heavy periods on and off, her symptoms worsened during the lockdown. As she developed huge clots, Prakshi underwent an ultrasound that revealed a tumor in the uterus.
After a hysteroscopic investigation, scans, and biopsies, it was found to be endometrial cancer. Prakshi underwent a radical hysterectomy and bilateral oophorectomy that put her into medical menopause. Doctors deduced that her cancer was caused due to excess estrogen hormone in the body, probably because of undiagnosed PCOS.
Though she fought and survived cancer, Prakshi had to face social victimization that put her life plans into the doldrums. Her marriage was scheduled for April 2021. However, soon after, her partner and his family broke off all ties branding him merely a cancer patient and an infertile woman - she ceased to be a ‘normal human being’ in their eyes.
But Prakshi is truly Prakshi - a symbol of radiance in Sanskrit. She started to accept herself as she is and instead of, searching for answers for social victimization, she began focusing on her life. After two years, she counts every day as a blessing and takes it one day at a time. Prakshi believes when death stares you in the face, you tend to change for the better. Today, she is strong enough to help fellow warriors and survivors and assist them to fight cancer and societal mistreatment.
Let’s learn from this young woman how she triumphed against the double-edged sword of cancer and social abandonment and overcome her worst hours. Prakshi blooms out of her gloom to educate and aware others about the disease called cancer and how to withstand its detrimental effects.
