If you would preheat a regular frying pan or the oven then you also preheat the air fryer. Parchment paper for air fryer or reg parchment with holes punched will help make less cleanup.
P.S. I use my air fryer a lot, not for the lazy properties, but because living in an apartment that doesn't have an over the range vent hood and no window to open in close proximity, it prevents things from smoking (i.e. when grilling steaks or burger patties) and sending the fire alarm off.
