I love when steam locomotives blow their whistle's through a bundle of crossings at once. You can just the power in their whistles when they do. Btw, the SP&S 700 whistle sounds amazing here.
That's SP&S 700's whistle that filled in for 4449's original stolen whistle since 1975. It wasn't until 1990 that is was replaced with a Northern Pacific 3 chime and then an authentic SP 3 chime in 2010.
though the quality of the video footage may have degraded with age, after all it was probably shot on magnetic tape back in 1984, the beauty of this baby certainly has not gone away. glad to see some of the old footage still around
God the whistle sounds so much better than the one on it today. Idk if it's damaged or what but this won sounds magical. The current one sounds god awful.
I like the way it sounds in this video. But from what I understand, the whistle it has now comes from SP 4452, which would be the correct one. Either way, the proper whistle for these engines was the air horn. During the 40s and 50s, it was common practice to use the air horn at crossings, not the steam whistle.
Hot damn, it’s a nice sounding whistle. Since they have the same whistle. 700 & 4449 currently has a Hancock 3 Chime but 4449’s is a real Daylight one. So I doubt they’d every change it back.
It does sound a little off-putting now but it sounded amazing when it was first put on it. The low notes are now a little too dominant. I’m guessing it’s starting to go through the phase that most old Hancocks have where the high note (a beautiful G) begins to fade.
Nope. It was put on the SP&S 700. The whistle heard here is apparently an SP&S Challenger whistle and from what I've heard, was on the 4449 to raise awareness for the restoration of the 700.

Really, That's Locomotive (Daylight) Dude, It's Just a Locomotive, She Doesn't Have These Names Except For Her Nickname...

4449 was on her way home to Portland, Oregon.

Great vid, glad it's survived from 1984!
it pulled the original sp daylight cars
The consist had cars from the Great Northern, SP&S, and Frisco in it, so not totally original.
Well, at least it once had coaches to pull rather than pulling mixed up passenger cars nowadays.
That’s because the Southern Pacific was still their own railroad in 1984.

I'm probably in this one! I was towards the left as the train was approaching. It was really booking through Berkeley, wasn't it?
Dang, I was 10
Epic to the absolute max!
Just wait until July this year. 4449 will make an excursion longer than this! And towards the last place I would've expected too.
2x speed = high speed excursion

I Think This Whistle Went 700 In 1990. It Sounds Awful Like It. But Then Again Who Knows Where This Whistle Might Have Went.
KremeStation The whistle on it in this video is currently on SP 4449’s stablemate, which is the Spokane, Portland, and Seattle E-1 number 700

Was This Whistle Damaged?
