Once, you've downloaded to your computer, then that means you got a copy of the photos & videos. You can also just delete a few and see whether the copy is still there and then you can delete all from the Google photos. All the best!
WARNING you will lose you exif data, these data will be separated to json file. Exif keep such data, as the day your photo was taken + many more information related to photo. 👎👎👎

During download my internet connection went down again and again , so I had to keep trying to download repeatedly and now Google is showing this notification when I click on the 2nd link - "You have downloaded these files maximum number of times! Hello I created albums to download my videos and photos. Sadly i'm very confused about something... in the albums, I only see the photos and not the videos.... But when I download them on my hard drive I can see all my data including my videos. So why in the albums it doesn't include the videos as well? I'm on desktop by the way. Thanks for you help
Thank you very much for helping people out. It is outrageous how Google makes their products extraordinarily anti-usable just so that they profit from people by making them waste cloud resources. This is unjust. Any good and sane product design would give you a simple button to download all photos. But instead, you have to go through that massively painful and non-intuitive process. My tip, avoid using Google service for storing your data for a longer time or avoid using it at all. I want to help my mom to move the photos onto her computer. Unfortunately, she is locked into Google with her phone. (And yes, just because I am a programmer or software developer, it's not easier for me to use.)

Hello! Yes, after downloading the photos & videos to your laptop. Then, save them outside Google Drive & hence you could delete them from Google drive to save space.
After you've requested it, then Google will create a download link after sometime, depending on the size of your photos & videos, then email the link to you. When you click on the link, you can then download all your photos & videos to your computer, tablet, phone, anywhere you want!

What's your operating system. If you're using Windows 10 and above, you won't need any other program to unzip it. If you'd look at 6:49, you can see that I don't open json files. Every photos has got a json file with the same name. It's just the extra information of the photo and not the photo itself. So, you don't need to open the json files. I hope it's clear.

No. If you do this method you'd be given json links where you would have to open and download 1 by 1.
The problem is photos metadata are contained in the json file
I won't need the json file to open the photos. It's just an extra info.
