And I am seeing this after owning the flash for over 6 years now. Just exactly what I needed to know. Thank you very much for the tutorial. Awesome job indeed!!!
I just wanted to take a minute and say thank you, David. I watch instructional you tube videos when I need to and sometimes people prattle on about unnecessary things and I just felt like you were quick, concise and straight to the point and I really appreciated it! Thank you.
Finally, a person who actually knows how to give a tutorial. Im a beginner, skip all the photography lingo and just get to the point, which is exactly what this guy did. Bravo!
I've been in video for years and have been trying to branch into photography for the past 3. This is by far one of the easiest equipment tutorials to understand, simple and to the point. Thank you!!!
Awesome job dude, very informative and clear. I liked that you acknowledged that you weren't sure about that particular button rather than trying to explain something poorly. And really, most people won't use that button anyhow, especially for those who watched this video tend to be more amateurs like myself. Thanks again!
Thank you. Someone just let me borrow this particular flash so getting information on it helps. You speak clearly and do a good job of articulating the key points.
Thanks for this. I'm still relatively new to photography and using an external flash. I bought the 430 EX II this morning. Your explanation is very clear and easy to understand for someone like me that is just starting out. Thanks again.
I've actually had my flast for a while now, never looked into it properly enough and this is a great starter video for flash newbies thanks! Subed, faved, liked, followed etc
Wow, you should make the instruction manual for this thing. After I read it I had no clue, you cleared it up. Thank you, Im really new to all this and its nice to get instruction in english.
I just got the flash and playing with the controls. One really nice feature it has it the ability to auto adjust the flash range when you adjust the focal length on a zoom lens. Ex. I have a 18-55 lens. The flash will drop down to 24mm at the 18mm end of the lens. At the long end 55mm, the flash moves up to 50mm. It will adjust to a few in between settings as well. Very nice durable case that comes with it which has an inside pocket to hold the flash stand too.
Thanks man, this helped a lot. Just what I needed, not too much info at once, just enough to let me know how to mess around with it and learn how to get the look I like.
I have been watching video after video trying to understand what these setting actually mean, and your video is the only one that actually explained the meaning of the settings, along with how to use them. I feel like I actually understand how to use this flash after watching your video!! Thank you so much! Would have been nice if you knew a little more about the last two settings. I really appreciate how easy to understand and follow this video is, so I am bumming because I don't know if I will find another video to explain the last two settings as well. But THANKS SO MUCH for this!
I have the 580EX and have been needing another flash for a long time. I have been considering the 430exII but wasn't sure it would be enough. I need it more for my second body and for off camera shooting. i think i'm sold on it now. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for saying you don't know what it does instead of talking bullocks or ignoring the setting completely! Haven't got one yet, but now I sure know more about why i might want to get one. thanks!
Thank so much David. Took me forever to find this kind of info. I own a Sigma and the same basic concept explained here, now allows me to apply that in return. I feel a lot more confident and knowledgeable and how to use my Sigma speedlite. Again, thanks a million.
Hi David, I did look in all comments here, but regarding the High Speed function in 430EX II (the third button from left to right) is when you'd like to set the shutter speed higher than 1/200. By default the maximum speed is 1/200 even if you setup a higher than that, and the reason is about the how fast the curtain close and open, so 1/200 is the limit, and with speed over that you could expect some black strips in your image. Please, if I told something silly, correct me! Nice tutorial!
Thanks David. Totally helped me out. Mixing in the Canon 430ex with a Nikon D600. Now I'm off to grab some spectacular pics of real estate listing in Las Vegas.
Great video, it was very helpful- I ordered one today, and even though I don't have it yet I feel like I have a pretty good understanding of how it works. Thanks!
Thank you for the video. My zoom setting was stuck on 14mm and I couldn't figure out how to change it. I had the built-in wide panel over the flash and as soon as I retracted it, I was able to change the zoom setting like in the video.
For those with curious minds - the "I'm not sure what this shutter priority thing does"... When selected it allows you to exceed the Canon max sync shutter speed of 1/250th of a sec.. It's called (ironically) Hi-Speed Shutter sync up to 1/8000 / sec. The other with the >>> tells it to flash at first curtain or last curtain in your camera. Useful to use last curtain for longer exposures all the way up to bulb. Or down to bulb I suppose is more accurate
Am I correct in assuming that if you are using your camera in the manual setting and using the flash in the manual setting, you would pre-set how strong you want the flash to be, but it would always flash according to whatever your camera settings might be? For instance, in changing light, I shouldn't have to worry about changing anything on the flash if I go from 1/250 if a second to 1/1000th? The flash will work to my settings; the only variable would be how strong the flash is?
thank you so much for making this. it all makes sense now haha. do you have any suggestions on what settings to use for shooting at concerts and still be able to capture the different colored lights and stuff?
thnks for the video...cud u plz tell how can we use three or more 430ex ii flashes off camera ..without using camera pop up flash or 580ex ii as master??? thanks
For others who want to know what the last button is that he mentioned. It controls the flashes high speed sync abilities. Usually you can't fire a flash if you're shooting faster than 1/200sec. Pushing the button once will put the flash into high speed sync mode, which means you can shoot with shutter speeds up to 1/8000sec (so long as you are using it on cam, or via an advanced trigger/cable). Press it twice, and the flash fires just before the second curtain on your shutter shuts.
Took me forever to find a video like this. Most how to's about flash are more theory and technical explanations. I just need to know what each button does and its functions. This was perfect.
Great tutorial thanks :) But one question, when you zoom the flash to 24mm or 50mm, is that for a full frame or a crop sensor? or can the flash detect what camera it's connected to and compensate?
the last thing is called high speed sync, its a new thing and helps with the photos when shooting outside, its the one i use the most, cos its a fill light, even indoors.
HELLO THERE I JUST FOUND YOUR POST AND I HAVE TWO QUESTIONS I HOPE YOU CAN HELP ME WITH, (1) WHAT IS THE NAME AND MODEL OF THE TRIGGER YOU USED TO TRIGGER THE 430EX2? THE OTHER IS THAT MY PILOT LIGHT DOSE'NT LIGHT UP IS EVEN WITH NEW BATTERIES ,DOSE THAT MATTER ARE IS THE BATTERIES NOT STRONG ENOUGH OR IS IT BROKEN? GREAT VIDEO AND THANKS IN ADVANCE
thanks i really enjoyed the video.. but i need help.. Is it possible to shoot with high speed sync using the 430exii and the canon 600d? the 430exii is being triggered by the canon600d inbuilt flash so the 430exii is in slave mode..
@kimboy007 Yes with batteries in the flash you know your ready for the next picture when your pilot button is red you have to wait for it to turn red or it will not flash.
Thank you very much for your lesson. It gave every thing about 430EX II. Thank again for doing this for us. Can I have your website again please? Can you teach us about low key lighting using 430 EX please. Parsa, Sydney
Would you kindly explain the manual settings? I was not able to follow your button sequence in that part of the tutorial, beginning @ ~ 3:45 minutes until ~ 4:55 minutes. Thank you.
not sure if anyone asked but I think you skipped the mounted part, how does the batteries work when mounted? will the pilot button still be needed before the flash? great video :)
Hey Jon, the zoom values relate to full frame sensors. But the flash is able to adjust the zoom automatically if you have a crop (aps-c) sensor. speedlights net / 2011 / 03 / 30 / canon-430ex-ii Scroll the page down to the chapter "Auto Zoom".

Excellent video. Simple and clearly explained. Hard to find in the TH-cam ocean.
+Patricia Connelly thanks

I'm trying to use my old Canon 430EX II with my new Sony A6300 camera and this video was exactly what I needed to know. Thanks.
Thank you. Someone just let me borrow this particular flash so getting information on it helps. You speak clearly and do a good job of articulating the key points.
just got it today. Did an unboxing video of it. I love this, it improves your photo by A LOT. i was blown away by the result..
Thanks for this. I'm still relatively new to photography and using an external flash. I bought the 430 EX II this morning. Your explanation is very clear and easy to understand for someone like me that is just starting out. Thanks again.

Much better than a lot of professional photography instructors. Thanks!
thanks

Just picked up a 430 EX II. Great overview..exactly what i needed to know to get started!
Thanks so much! I have had my 430ex for a couple years but could only use it through the camera. FINALLY I know how to control it manually!!!

Just bought one of these....your vid has helped me get to grips with it, as a previous responder said, " better than the manual"

Your 7 minute video is better than the manual. Thank you.
Cool. Just got one, started to read the manual and thought oh no, I don't understand hahaha. Your video helps a great deal. Thanks for the help
Just to add to the general comments here...just what I needed, nice and straightforward. Thank you
Thank so much David. Took me forever to find this kind of info. I own a Sigma and the same basic concept explained here, now allows me to apply that in return. I feel a lot more confident and knowledgeable and how to use my Sigma speedlite. Again, thanks a million.
Just bought one today. This tutorial was just what i was looking for! Thanks!
Thank you for your tutorial! I have an evening military homecoming to shoot tonight and your tutorial is greatly appreciated

Quick, simple and to the point. People talk NOT manual waffle. Cheers.
Thanks! It shed a lot of light into how to use the flash!
nice nice explanation... just bought 430 and still getting hang of it... but this video gave me a head start
@sjphs Regular batteries around 800 shoots or if you get energizer lithium batteries i think I was getting around 1200 shots
This was an amazing tutorial. Looks like the other 6 people who didn't like this love their Chinese cheap flashes.
This was awesome! I knew nothing about this flash, and know I completely understand!
Thanks for the video. It's a nice overview of the functions of the 430EX.
Thanks
thanks for the info,, im stuck with the ETTL,, but now having this info about manual mode my shots look better
Abbey king Happy I could help
What's the best setting to use for a fill flash at an outdoor car show? Thanks!
Thanks so much. I found the manual pretty intimidating and I started to fear my flash but I'm good to go now :)
Thank you David. Your video is very helpful indeed. Many Greetings from Greece! George.
Wow thank you very much, this is much better than reading a tiny letters instruction manual
Thanks

hey....great walk through on how to use this flash...have you ever connected the flash to strobe lighting using the slave?
SunShine007 yes I have
Media Unlocked Can u direct me to a link on how to do this
thank, this really helped me i just got my 430 ex ii. one question, why do people use the 580?
It has more functions like controlling the 430ex over infrared and all and all a better flash. I just like the price point on the 430ex better.
Great video! Finally got around to understanding this thing.
@hoavcao yes with the t3i or a wireless transmitter and receive unit
Hi David, great explenation about the flash. Helps a lot to get a better overview about. THX
This is so helpful! Do you need to put your camera into a certain mode in order to use the flash?
+Kaylee Koenig I use manual mode
thank you so much for making this. it all makes sense now haha. do you have any suggestions on what settings to use for shooting at concerts and still be able to capture the different colored lights and stuff?
Thank you! Best 430 ex II learning vid by far!
What type of batteries do you recommend using in the 430exii for long lasting where I wont have that delay when the pilots not ready?
@raluca, your menu is flashing because your diffuser screen is not pushed all the way in. Push it in until it clicks.
thnks for the video...cud u plz tell how can we use three or more 430ex ii flashes off camera ..without using camera pop up flash or 580ex ii as master??? thanks
@rlisberg I hope to have the remote flash video shot with in the next few weeks
For others who want to know what the last button is that he mentioned. It controls the flashes high speed sync abilities. Usually you can't fire a flash if you're shooting faster than 1/200sec. Pushing the button once will put the flash into high speed sync mode, which means you can shoot with shutter speeds up to 1/8000sec (so long as you are using it on cam, or via an advanced trigger/cable). Press it twice, and the flash fires just before the second curtain on your shutter shuts.
What are the stops when using the decrease/increase flash output? Is 1/2 a full or half stop, etc. ?
never knew how to use it and this vid explained it all.....Thanks
+Bang Bang TV happy to help

@elimar48 have you poped up the on board flash when it goes of you should as. As long as you have your flash set in slave mode
Thank you for the great straight to the point tutorial! Much appreciated!!
+One Man One Volt happy to help
This is so helpful. I have watched it a few times. thanks!
Ahhh! THANK YOU for explaing this in a layman's terms! Big help!!
the last thing is called high speed sync, its a new thing and helps with the photos when shooting outside, its the one i use the most, cos its a fill light, even indoors.
Thank you for the great demonstration on how to use this wonderful device. I shall attempt to use mine now. =)
This was immensely helpful and very straightforward! Thank you.

Good overview. Easy to follow, and done in a nice concise way.
just got the light , for some reason i cannot control the zoom at all . any suggestions?
Beats reading the manual. Big thanks for the info.
Look into Sanyo Eneloops, they seem to be the goto ones for rechargeables as they hold their charge when not in use. Cheaper in the long run too.
@Minxie4You Yes but the 430ex ii can not control another flash
Yes its a great flash I have a link to it in the description bar . I have 3 of them and love them
@WarmothStrat I am happy I could help
thanks i really enjoyed the video.. but i need help..
Is it possible to shoot with high speed sync using the 430exii and the canon 600d? the 430exii is being triggered by the canon600d inbuilt flash so the 430exii is in slave mode..
@kimboy007 Yes with batteries in the flash you know your ready for the next picture when your pilot button is red you have to wait for it to turn red or it will not flash.
what flash do you have and does it have hyper sync
What's the best setting for shooting subjects like liquid droplets if you just have the one flash.
Thank you so much! Super clear and concise instructions!
@MrSchadoosh I believe there is it should be under menu. I dont have a 60d so I am not positive
Thank you very much for your lesson. It gave every thing about 430EX II. Thank again for doing this for us. Can I have your website again please?
Can you teach us about low key lighting using 430 EX please.
Parsa, Sydney
Thanks, cleared a lot up for me.very simple to understand..you dont happen to have any instructional videos on the 5d Mark ii do you?...
@SuperWario094 Your flash sounds broken could you please explain whats wrong with it in more detail
Nice explanations. Thanks!
thanks
Would you kindly explain the manual settings? I was not able to follow your button sequence in that part of the tutorial, beginning @ ~ 3:45 minutes until ~ 4:55 minutes. Thank you.
Do you have it in ettl mode or manual mode
not sure if anyone asked but I think you skipped the mounted part, how does the batteries work when mounted? will the pilot button still be needed before the flash? great video :)
Hey Jon, the zoom values relate to full frame sensors. But the flash is able to adjust the zoom automatically if you have a crop (aps-c) sensor.
