    STORYLINE:
Hundreds of people showed up on Monday for the opening day of the Smithsonian Institution's new Air and Space Museum centre in Chantilly, Virginia.
The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is a giant hangar converted to display aircraft and aviation artifacts, including the B-29 bomber, Enola Gay, which dropped the first atomic bomb used in anger, on the Japanese city of Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945.
Among the centre's first guests were seven survivors of the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan in the Second World War, present to see the plane and express their anti-atomic views.
Dr. Terumi Tanaka, who survived the atomic bombing of Nagasaki said he was saddened rather than angered by viewing the aircraft, which "killed so many of my friends, so many of my family members."
The survivors said their main complaint was that no information on the effects of the bomb were not included in the display.
The death toll in Hiroshima from the Enola Gay bombing grew to around 140,000 by the end of 1945, while some 70,000 people had died by then in Nagasaki from the second atomic attack, according to U.N. reports.
Many died lingering deaths well after the bombs were dropped - killed by radiation poisoning.
A small group of demonstrators shouted briefly near the Enola Gay exhibit after a red liquid representing blood was spilled on the floor near the plane's nose gear.
Security officers moved in quickly to restore order, and maintenance workers cleaned up the spill.
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority said that airport police arrested two men in connection with the incident.

Enola Gay is a historically significant aircraft, it's absolutely correct for the US to have it on public display. It's also absolutely fine for an elderly Japanese man to shed some tears upon seeing it - what's not fine though is the absolute ghouls crowding him with cameras.

There were more lives lost in Hiroshima than in Nagasaki. But when the protester at 2:35 holds the sign the reads, "140,000 dead", that is meant to combine the numbers of those killed at both Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Also, the mission to Nagasaki was bungled up in many ways, since they left with a fuel pump not working (so they couldn't use all the fuel in their tanks), they waited too long for the photo equipment plane (The Big Stink) to arrive, wasting fuel, then their primary target, Kokura (which was the secondary target for the Hiroshima mission) was obscured by cloud cover (they were ordered to drop the bomb visually, when they found a target), and when they finally reached Nagasaki, the bomb was was dropped 1.5 miles off target, resulting in the blast to be mostly confined to the Urakami Valley. The Big Stink then finally arrived just in time to film the explosion, and eventually, Bockscar landed at Okinawa, with so little fuel that two of the engines quit for fuel starvation.

thank you for saying that and understanding that at the end of the day a boy pulled from a base in Louisiana didnt drop the bomb to be mean it was his orders he was told it would end the war. the Japanese solders were under the same thing, they were told to fight the Americans to fight to the death no matter what so the Americans wouldnt advance. they were men following orders. thats all and thats all it will ever be. people just want to remember history and those who sacrificed everything. this is a piece of metal that holds history and it is being preserved that is all. the boys who dropped the bomb did not celebrate it was another bombing mission just like many pilots from Germany and Japan flew. the boys were all doing a job unfortunately the job is war and the currency earned is flesh and bone.

GEGEGE NO KITARO Japan should thank America for ending the war so quickly. The real reason that the Japanese war command couldn’t surrender because they knew exactly what they did to both the people of their occupation and the allies prisoners. How inhumanly they treated them. Had the war lasted 5 years longer, the Russian would occupy at least half of the over 6852 islands, and the allies would have learned about their pow conditions, suffering at the hand of the imperial Japanese armed force. Seeing how they slaughtered some captured German nazi prisoners, a much starker outcome maybe for Japanese. I am against all killing, even to the enemies. This is about how blessed the kind Japanese people are in general. Their good karma enable them quick recovery and healing. Yet some in government still try hard to deny the extreme cruelty their soldiers committed. It is for the good of the great Japanese people to learn. Even at winning, to remember to be kind too.

Even the surrender of the Japanese, after the two A-bombs, was almost impossible for them and only when the emperor decided to surrender and the pledge that he could stay on, Japan capitulated. With regards to the Enola Gay exhibit, my feelings are complex. On the one hand, no matter how you come at this topic, Japan was losing the war, and could not turn it around in their favor (despite what their propaganda was saying). On the other hand, I do not think the bombs were the only reason the war ended so quickly (though it was a factor in Emperor Hirohito's decision-making). By early 1945, the Americans had air and naval supremacy over Japan, plus on August 9, 1945, hours before Bockscar bombed Nagasaki, the Soviet army was sweeping through Manchukuo (Manchuria). The Japanese high-command were certainly worried that if they kept fighting, then Japan would be divided like Germany had been (but it would have been more probable that Japan would be divided north and south, like Korea and Vietnam would be.
    Another thing was that the Americans had three options for finishing off Japan;
    1. Nukes
    2. Invasion
    3. Blockade
The invasion was the route no one wanted, since it would lead to the highest number of casualties (and the Soviets would take more land in the lead-up to the Cold War), the blockade was already happening with American subs sinking Japanese supply ships, and American B-29s, land-based escort fighters (P-51Ds and P-47Ns ), and carrier-borne fighters and bombers destroying what was left of the Japanese war-machine. The nukes were the option that much of the American brass (though there were notable exceptions, like Eisenhower) felt was the quickest way to end the war. It was not the only reason Japan surrendered, but a contributing factor nonetheless.
The Enola Gay is currently displayed without much context of it's role in world history. Yes, the B-29 is a remarkably advanced airplane for it's time, but the Enola Gay should serve as a memorial to both it's crew and the victims of atomic warfare. The Enola Gay should be the reason we never use nukes in combat again, and eventually the reason nukes weapons become disbanded from warfare, like flamethrowers and poison gas have.

majorgeeek I am well aware that the Japanese surrendered largely due to the Soviet threat. I tried to make that clear because, after all, the Japanese saw what the Soviets did to the Tsar in 1918, and the leaders feared, rightly so, that the same would happen to the Emperor. The only reason the Emperor is still a role in Japan is because it was politically expedient to keep him there to restore ties with the Japanese people, even I know he and members of his family (like Prince Asaka for perpetuating the Rape of Nanking) should have been prosecuted like Tojo.
As for the atomic bombs being used, I think there is plenty to debate about, and I think that Americans in general don’t get as much context as they should. But I have met with American veterans of WWII, and even though I think we should not have dropped the bombs, they told me that if the war didn’t end that abruptly, they would have been in Operation Downfall (set to begin in October 1945), and they likely would not have survived (Casualty estimates varied, but many felt the casualties would be equal to, if not greater than all American casualties up to that point in the war). Though I’m glad the war ended as soon as it did, nuclear weapons should be banned, specifically because of the suffering of the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I am willing to debate with you as I am a history major in college with a penchant for WWII history.

@@adamestes5227 - what Tojo did wrong was he took the wrap and responsibility for WW2 away from Hirohito - this was done with Truman's guidance and blessings otherwise he would have had to put Hirohito on trial - For Truman the Hirohito trial always carried the threat of exposing and criticizing the Truman regime for its incendiary and atomic bombing of Japan’s cities with immense toll in civilian lives - Hirohito and his advisers knew Truman also wanted to avoid any possible judicial questioning about the bombings and about the ending of the war - insulating Hirohito from prosecution impeded the historical clarification of the decision-making process leading to war and surrender -just what Truman wanted
In response to your second paragraph, I wouldn't rely too much on first hand reports by veterans as they were not privy to top brass high level decisions made by both sides during ww2. In my opinion the USA planned invasion of Japan would never have gone ahead anyway because Truman had received Japan's official Offer of Surrender on August 10 which said the surrender was in response to the Soviet August Storm Invasion on August 9 - Sep2, 1945 so he knew he had to pull something out of the hat to entice the Japanese leaders to surrender before the Soviet army could gobble up more territory - the Soviet declaration of war was the key element to Japan's early surrender because it changed the calculation of how much time was left for maneuver. Japanese intelligence was predicting that U.S. forces might not invade for months. Soviet forces, on the other hand, could be in Japan proper in as little as 3 weeks.
The Soviet invasion made a decision on ending the war extremely time sensitive. In fact Japan’s leaders had reached this conclusion some months earlier. In a meeting of the Supreme Council in June 1945, they said that Soviet entry into the war “would determine the fate of the Empire.” Army Deputy Chief of Staff Kawabe said, in that same meeting, “The absolute maintenance of peace in our relations with the Soviet Union is imperative for the continuation of the war.” the strategy of making a last stand at Kyūshū was based on the assumption of continued Soviet neutrality even PM Suzuki said August 13 when asked why they could not delay surrender for a few days “If we miss today, the Soviet Union will take not only Manchuria, Korea, Karafuto, but also Hokkaido. This would destroy the foundation of Japan. We must end the war when we can deal with the United States.” The Soviet invasion invalidated the military’s decisive battle strategy, just as it invalidated the diplomatic strategy. At a single stroke, all of Japan’s options evaporated. The Soviet invasion was strategically decisive - it foreclosed both of Japan’s options - while the bombing of Hiroshima (which foreclosed neither) was not.

@@majorrgeek So let me get this straight: what you are saying with Tojo is that his only fault was being the highest-ranking war criminal to prosecuted because Hirohito couldn't be charged? This may not be what you intended, but to me that would be like you saying "The only thing Goering did wrong was taking the blame for Hitler". Yes, the circumstances are different, but it seems you did not take Tojo's crimes seriously. After all, it was Tojo and the other military leaders in Japan who convinced the Emperor to bring Japan into war with China, the United States, Great Britain, the Dutch East Indies, and all other Allied powers.
As for civilian bombings, I would hold Curtis LeMay far more responsible for those horrific events such as Hiroshima and Nagasaki, along with the firebombing missions against Tokyo, Osaka, Yokohama, and many more cities across Japan, that killed and rendered homeless just as many people as Hiroshima and Nagasaki (though without the long-term consequences of radioactive fallout). But you have to remember, WWII was a total war, where the civilian populace, who supports the military campaigns of a nation by producing arms and equipment in factories, by supporting the leadership in place, and contributing to the war effort in the guise of civilians firebombing
Let us not forget that before American bombers leveled Hiroshima and Nagasaki, they dropped thousands of leaflets on Japanese cities, pleading for the civilian wherein to evacuate from the cities before the bombing runs, and some leaflets even informed the Japanese that the Soviets had declared war against them, and urged the civilian populace to force their leaders to surrender immediately. Compare that to Japanese aerial bombings in China during the Second Sino-Japanese War, such as the Bombing of Chongqing, which took place from 1938-43. There, Japanese bombers bombed non-military targets such as residential areas, business areas, schools, and hospitals. And other war atrocities, from the Rape of Nanking, to Unit 731, to the Bataan Death March and many, many more show the Japanese Empire for what it was: a brutal regime that did as much harm on the world stage as Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. Do not take this to mean I intend to prevent scrutiny over U.S. atrocities against Japanese soldiers and civilians (those stories must be told as well), I am simply attempting to add context to this.

@@adamestes5227 - I did not say Tojo was not a war criminal, he definitely was and so too was Hirohito and so too was Truman - I said "what Tojo did wrong was he took the wrap and responsibility for WW2 away from Hirohito" in fact this move was pre arranged along with the Allied prosecution so the Emperor was not forced to abdicate, was not tried but Tojo was forced to take the wrap of the war on his shoulders at the trials to protect Hirohito and this is what we mean by perjured by the USA prosecution and Japanese government continued to function (the prime minister was selected by Japan) under the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers but Japan remained "independent and sovereign."
you mentioned General LeMay he himself was an undeniable "expert witness" who had pioneered precision bombing of Germany and Japan and who oversaw the atomic bombing of Japan and later headed the Strategic Air Command and served as US Air Force chief of staff from 1961 to 1956, and his view on the atomic bombings - he put it most succinctly: "The atomic bomb had nothing to do with the end of the war." - he also said he would have been tried as a war criminal had we lost the war
what else is wrong with your comment? total war? - WW2 was never declared a total war by the allies at any time even when Goebbels declared a total war it wasn't a total war even then since German women were not expected to take up arms in a fight same with Japan not all citizens/women were expected to fight and not all materials were seized for the war. Also the fact we held war crimes tribunals attests the fact ww2 was not a Total War where anything and everything goes including the law
the law is also clear under International Law of Hague it was only legal to bomb civilians if you had proof they were combatant belligerents otherwise Truman had a duty of care to protect civilians which he breached badly with his carpet and terror bombings of Japan - working in factories etc is not an acceptable or legal reason to kill civilians so don't make up crap if it isn't true - the proper way of handling war criminals you catch them try them and punish them - killing their civilians ie reprisal killing is just another war crime - eg Hiroshima classic war crime which was totally overlooked at the Tokyo tribunals in fact the word atom bomb were banned from the legal proceedings so we purjored the courts in order to cover up a classic war crime. Hirohito was insulated from any court proceedings too because Truman also wanted to avoid any possible judicial questioning about the bombings and about the ending of the war - insulating Hirohito from prosecution impeded the historical clarification of the decision-making process leading to war and surrender - just what Truman wanted
The information we are fed today, is the same bullshit our grand parents were fed yesterday - to pass onto us. The victors don’t critically examine their crimes nor hold war crime trials against themselves; they create a false history to glorify themselves - the bombs ended the war is all a hoax and it is wrong for us to go on learning that a war crime can be differentiated as something that was necessary and useful

Today an American Latino exhibit in the Smithsonian is controversial and being shut down (or the next museum?). I thought I'd revisit the Enola Gay controversy. The other day I read a quote from Cicero in Carl Sagan's _The Demon-Haunted World:_
"The first law is that the historian shall never dare to set down what is false; the second, that he shall never dare to conceal the truth; the third, that there should be no suspicion in his work of either favoritism or prejudice."
_Oppenheimer_ has been a successful movie this summer. The stated purpose of the Manhattan Project to build an atomic bomb was to get one before German scientists got one. When Intelligence suggested Germany had given up or failed their project, the American bomb project wasn't canceled. When Germany surrendered, the American bomb project wasn't canceled.
It's said there's more than one cause of Japan's surrender (and its delays): the realization of the hopelessness of their situation prior to August 1945, attempts to have the Soviet Union (with which they had a neutrality agreement) mediate with the United States to avoid "unconditional" surrender, U.S. dropping the A-bomb on Hiroshima Aug 6, the Soviets declaring war against Japan on Aug 9, 1945 (which they'd agreed to do three months after Germany's surrender which was May 8), the U.S. dropping the A-bomb on Nagasaki Aug 9, the Soviet victory over Japanese troops in Manchuria, their invasions of Korea and the Sakhalin Islands and the threat of a Soviet invasion of Japan from the north. Agreement to accept the Potsdam Declaration occurred August 15 with formal surrender and V-J day on September 2, 1945.
Prior to atomic bombings of Japan, there had been the incendiary bombing (or firebombing) air raids of Tokyo killing 100,000 and rendering one million homeless. The atomic bombing of Hiroshima led to between 70,000-150,000 deaths; Nagasaki 40,000 initially plus 30-60,000 dead from burns and radiation poisoning, a new and horrific injury.

nonsense Truman failed to observe the articles of War which make clear distinction between civilian and combatant - furthermore, SKF was selling Germany ball bearings until 1945 - USA Standard oil supplied Hitler with all the oil and Fuel and was refueling U boats - ITT purchased a substantial interest in Focke-WoIfe was producing German fighter aircraft used to kill Americans - Ford supplied Nazis with trucks - not all American civilians were as innocent as most Hiroshima victims should we kill them too??

    • @jtwimages
      @jtwimages ปีที่แล้ว

@@majorrgeek Truman's own quote: "the most terrible bomb in the history of the world." He did not want to kill civilians, but he had to due to safety of the planes holding the bombs.
If he warned Japan, the planes would have been shot down, potentially causing even more deaths
In The USA's own 'The Articles of War' of 1920, there was not a single mention of the word "civilian" so what articles of war are you talking about?
It's true that SKF sold ball bearings to Germany until 1945, but from Sweden, not the USA. The SKF in Philly actually said that they had no responsibility with Sweden's ball bearings supply to Germany. "Batt [Vice Chairman at the time] has been under fire because the parent SKF company in Sweden has been shipping ballbearings to Germany, without which the Nazis could not build airplanes. While Ball's SKF company in Philadelphia is in no way responsible for letting the Nazis have ball-bearings"
Standard Oil never DIRECTLY sent oil to Hitler, much rather the case that Hitler seized our ships / stole it from Spain.
Ford DID supply Nazis with trucks. As a matter of fact about a third were Ford which is complete BS. Never buying a Ford in my life after looking further into that
Now obviously the killing of civilians like this should not be celebrated, but the thing that should be celebrated is the fact that it will never happen again. If it does, then you can tell me I am wrong when another life is taken due to nuclear/atomic weapons.
Also look at what the USA did for Japan after the war! Without us, they wouldn't have had a check for 15 billion dollars (2.2b back then) to get back on their feet. The USA made peace with Japan in the end, and maybe you should make peace with the fact that history is history which can only be used to ensure we don't make the same mistakes again.

@@majorrgeek thanks for the clarification. Both sides committed war crimes but in the end, the USA would never have the power it has today without a showing of force with this kind of proportion. Without these two bombs the USA would be a subsidiary to Russia and communism. ask yourself this: do you want to be able to have conversations like these? If yes, then you better thank the USA for doing some messed up shit, cuz otherwise you would never have the opportunity we have right here. It’s really quite simple: do you want a government that allows for you to think freely about this topic or a government that fabricated a story that you HAVE to believe in? Because you have been at this for 4 years it means you care about this topic so by caring and being able to share your opinion then you are inadvertently supporting the bombs.
TLDR: the bombs blocked communism from entering the USA so free speech and having your own thoughts on a matter would not be allowed. Everyone that uses free speech is inadvertently supporting the dropping of these bombs.
