The appeal to Right-wing propagandists of ignoring patriarchal violence in favor of focusing on things like "creepy" age differences (real or imagined) is obvious - a cultural shift that lets the likes of Christina Pushaw describe authoritarian censorship/thought-control efforts to deny the existence of gay and queer people as "anti-grooming" makes sense from that perspective - but I continue to be confused by the appeal to (putatively) Liberal or Leftist interlocutors. *So I certainly think an 18-year-old dating someone twice her age is a red flag demanding scrutiny, but I can't even count how many times I've heard people call someone dating an adult a "pedophile" (untrue by definition) or say that they thought an adult dating someone literally two or three years older is inherently creepy. It's feeling like the Satanic Panic all over again, but without a focal event for the panic, the label "pedophile" (and/or the related "grooming") gets attached to anyone dating someone more than a year or two younger. Again, I DO think the particular situation of Manson is creepy, but the overt relational violence is the far creepier part, and I'm reading the focus as part of a larger trend that I think is ultimately hindering the recognition of sexual and intimate partner violence. "Actually abusive" is always worse that "creepy".

Everyone on Twitter supported that man's father and insulted the deceased. When her father went to jail, the girl declared that the deceased was innocent and had an affair with someone else. What the hell happened to suddenly convince large swaths of the public that ANY age difference* between sex partners is an inherently abusive dynamic while SIMULTANEOUSLY ignoring plainly shown intimate partner violence (whether fictional representations like song lyrics or real-world violence perpetrated by musicians, actors, sportsball players, etc.)? It just seems like such a weirdly misdirected focus to me, and your specific example here is illustrative.

Why did I see so many tributes to Kobe Bryant when he died from people who, based on their politics and usual stances, tend to object to rape? What is Jameis Winston doing on my TV all the time? The weirdest contradiction was, of course, watching the third of the country that had been decrying Donald Trump as the worst person ever largely because he's a constantly lying narcissist with long history of sexual assault rally around Joe Biden, another constantly lying narcissist with a long history of sexual assault (and the Trump crowd flip the other way).
The appeal to Right-wing propagandists of ignoring patriarchal violence in favor of focusing on things like "creepy" age differences (real or imagined) is obvious - a cultural shift that lets the likes of Christina Pushaw describe authoritarian censorship/thought-control efforts to deny the existence of gay and queer people as "anti-grooming" makes sense from that perspective - but I continue to be confused by the appeal to (putatively) Liberal or Leftist interlocutors.
*So I certainly think an 18-year-old dating someone twice her age is a red flag demanding scrutiny, but I can't even count how many times I've heard people call someone dating an adult a "pedophile" (untrue by definition) or say that they thought an adult dating someone literally two or three years older is inherently creepy. Or consider the wild over-determination of sexual grooming, a phrase I've heard applied to adults with other adults, young adults (18-, 19-, and 20-year-olds) with teenagers (in cases where those adults had no power over the teenager and in cases where no sexual assault is alleged), and now any school curriculum that acknowledges that gay people exist. It's feeling like the Satanic Panic all over again, but without a focal event for the panic, the label "pedophile" (and/or the related "grooming") gets attached to anyone dating someone more than a year or two younger. Again, I DO think the particular situation of Manson is creepy, but the overt relational violence is the far creepier part, and I'm reading the focus as part of a larger trend that I think is ultimately hindering the recognition of sexual and intimate partner violence. "Actually abusive" is always worse that "creepy".
