  • Things to consider when buying your own synthetic jacket:
    - Make sure its sheet insulation
    - make sure its actually a LOT of insulation, it takes much more synthetic insluation to actually have a warm jacket, many synthetic jackets just dont have that much insulation.
    - Make sure the quality of the insulation is extremely hydrophobic
    - How well does the insulation retain its loft?
    - How heavy is it, many jackets are very heavy and even have less unsulation
    - What purpose are you going to use it for? Bush wacking? then make sure to get a shell or a more traditional jacket
    - Are you going to be in REALLY cold temps? if not maybe a less intense jacket would be better for you.
    SIZING:
I am 61, I got the SIZE M!!! So important. The size M is huge on me, its even bigger than my other jackets which are all XL or L. Keep in mind its a belay jacket meant as the outer most layer even to go over a rain shell. Size S or M would be good for most people. If you are small, good luck.

Nice review! Ready appreciate your detailed and honest reviews of this very expensive gear. One thing I will say is that all belay jackets are oversized so if you want a trimmer “city” cut you just need to size down. Cheers dude!

Best rain jacket, carhartt storm defender, can rain whole day and you stay dry if you also have the bibs on... heavy but its also made it through 2 year of work as shell jacket..

Only $400? Thats not bad for arcteryx, i remember seeing one different model going for $1100. I literally laughed out loud.

Yep, I also considered that they may stop making the nuclei the value will go up a lot. The belay jacket they made before this got really valuable on ebay when they stopped making them. Some say it was the best one ever, although I am really happy with my nuclei

@@Joshr13047 Yes the old Dually Belay was much more expensive, but I think the differences with Nuclei SV are pretty small in performance. Which basically means that Nuclei is amazing value.

Hey man, so you exchanged your previous XL to M? I just got a used Nuclei SV second hand, only been worn on one trip. It's L. I'm relatively tall and a bit muscular and I also feel the L is a little large, however, since I'm going to wear it on a trek up Kilimanjaro I'm thinking the size is actually OK since I'm going to wear two base layers, fleece, potentially a shell and then the Nuclei SV over all of that. Question now is, do you think the M would still be OK for all of that or the L is good for the purpose I use it for? Actually, when I wear it, it looks pretty much like you wearing the M. However, ideally I would prefer it to be a little more fitted. Let me know your thoughts bud.

I think all you can really do is try both on with your under layers. I couldnt agree more tho, I totally wish it was a little more fitted!

I also got the L and it feels like a tent. Not a big deal though, its a great jacket in all other aspects.

hi you mentioned this is breathable. I am looking for a warm jacket that can block the wind and rain and keep me warm but not have me sweating. I am from iteland so uts wet and cold and damp here and temo can be from minus 3to 4 degrees Celsius to 14. I am looking at the nuclei sv, proton heavy weight and the nuclei fl and atom heavyweight. which would recommend

Great question! you are looking at some good options. Here is my best answer:
      - if you are active definitely just a regular proton, i have had one for 3 years now and i love it. Most used and really great for active in the cold. I use it for hikes and runs from 0 to -10c
-if you are static then the nuclei SV thats it. The proton heavy weight is nothing compared to the nuclei sv. the nuclei sf is nothing compared to the SV also. I have no experience with the atom, although i know its one of their most popular products. I dont like that the sides have no insluation.
      - Other jackets to consider: the Mountain Equipment Citadel and the patadonia das. Although in my research the Nuclei is the best. But if either one of those jackets fits you better then I would go with that. The fit on the nuclei is huge.
      - If its really cold I like to wear my proton under my nuclei then take off the nuclie to be active.
But you are correct, in your conditions I would defnitely go with a synthetic option. My vote would be the nuclei. One last thing I will say is that the fit is very bulky, my girlfriend hates it and wont let me wear it around town. If you are mostly going to be in the city it might not be what your looking for. But for its features, I wear it every chanec I get.

Unusually for Arc'teryx, that's some serious hem lift at 1.50. I'd pass. My original standard Nuclei doesn't budge.

Enjoy it for the single season it'll be good for before the synthetic insulation loses its loft.

Yeah that is an issue with synthetic insulation, its worse with primaloft. I never pack mine up. I keep it outside the stuff sac whenever possible. But if you are a climber, yes definitely an issue
