Excerpt from R.A Lorrain’s Letter
Date August 4th 1937.
To The Chief Secretary of His Excellency
The Governor of Burma.
Sir.
After much thought and careful consideration and after consultation with our former Sub-Division Officer L.L. Peter Esq, and also the present S.D.O.G Jarman Esq, whose headquarters at Lungleh are six days march from this Mission Station here at Sherkor, Lakherland, I have decided that I must appeal to your Government and request your kind consideration of deterring at once the Rev. Chester U. Strait of the American Baptist Mission, Haka, Chin Hills, and his workers from touring the Shandoo or Lakher villages and taking from as our Converts and Baptizing such with the assertion to them that they belong to the A.B.M.S and not to the L.P.M. and in many cases, the villagers are given to understand that if they have anything to do with us or allow our Pastors to Baptize them it will go bad with them and their Chiefs, according to the reports of our workers. -----------------,
In 1923 Mr. Thom then D.C at Paletwa, Arakan, gave me permission to come through to him, and 1923 and 1924 were spent touring the Shandoos and Matus there and at Mr. Thom's suggestion then I applied to the Chief Secretary for Burma at Rangoon for permission to work these Hill Tribes with the Gospel. This was deemed necessary as the country was being taken over by Government.The Chief Secretary gave his consent and in 1925 I was invited to accompany an expedition under N.E. Parry Esq and to meet Lieut. Col. Barns (then Major, I believe) at two of the Sabong villages which we did in February 1925.

Awaiting the favor of your kind instructions and acknowledgment of the receipt of this letter. We have no regular Dak here but only as we can make arrangements for men to carry in and carry out our letters the six days a journey that lies in between.
