All of the shows and the movie have a connection. There are characters that cross seasons as well as mentions of varied characters throughout. I love how this episode nods to the movie...I that scenes actually match. So very excited to watch this season.
The “this is a true story” serves the themes of the series. Many of the seasons deal with themes of truth, and how “perception of reality, becomes reality”(V.M.Varga S3). If you believe that the story is true, then in your head, it’s no different from the story actually being true. These themes are further explored in this season.
I would push back a little and say the "true story" wording at the start acts as the show's "opening." While most TV shows have their own animation and theme song, this flashes the "true story" bit instead. It also suggests that what we are watching isn't actually what happened. If they are willing to change the names, then what other liberties are they taking to this tell this story? Helps to explain why UFOs might suddenly show up during a certain massacre at you-know-where.

Because Danish Graves doesn't actually exist. When Fargo says This Is A True Story, it isnt. But the seasons are inspired by some real life events.

For Fargo the this is a true story but, it’s a tongue in cheek deal for the casual viewers. Keeps them intrigued.
