    Unless the cops think you’re up to no good they are not going to hassle you.
    The law is there more or less for probable cause.
    Just don’t bring a knife into a restricted area. And at that point, it really doesn’t matter how long the blade is.
    There are stores in Chicago that sell pocket knives. Not to mention I regularly see students who attend chef schools in Chicago carrying their knife rolls on public transportation.
    Yes the law is very clear but it is only enforced when you do something stupid.

    I was an over the road semi driver for 8 years and all the knife laws drove me crazy, so I carried a Victorinox Classic SD for years and then I got a Victorinox Rambler. I had no issues at all. I was able to use it for cutting shrink rap off my pallets and for other things. I am so glad that Leatherman has the Knifeless Rebar and I wish I could have had that with me when I was over the road. I constantly had to open the side access to my tool storage to get different screwdrivers and other tools. I would have been so much faster and efficient if I had a bigger Victorinox and plier base multitool. The knife laws didn't allow me to carry that though. Being a semi driver, if DOT officers are bored, they seem to pull a random truck over at the weight scale and do an inspection. They want to see your log book, check you for weapons and check your truck for violations. They will write you a ticket for anything and arrest you if you have illegal weapons on you. I was pulled over maybe 3 times, that I can remember, but if I choose to not follow the laws, I would have been in trouble. Especially the time in California, they even cuffed me when doing the inspection, for they're safety. It was ridiculous. I never got a ticket for anything though. For a regular driver, I wouldn't worry about knife laws much. Victorinox knives are considered friendly knives. I seen so many people carrying them all over the United States. I wouldn't carry 1 over the 91mm though. A locking blade might also make it considered a weapon, on the bigger Victorinox knives.

      Wow, this is such an interesting post. Thank you so much for leaving it here. I haven't really thought about how complicated it would be to drive all over the United States with our myriad of knife laws. The bladeless Rebar is pretty awesome. I have one that I carry at work now. And it is quite functional! I don't like that the tools are on the inside, but it's great that I can at least have them with me in a compact package.
      The classic SD is, I have to admit, a remarkable tool for such a small size. Now I would always choose a Rambler over that, but when it comes to awesome functionality in the tiniest package, you really have it there. It cracks me up to think of you cutting plastic off of pallets with that teeny knife!!
      Yes, and honestly, as a woman, I'm probably a lot less likely to get in trouble for carrying a Swiss army knife if they feel like enforcing the laws. It really kind of annoys me that the 85mm SAK measures slightly over 2.5 inches, because then you could have a larger scissors!

    • @Spanky8402
      @Spanky8402 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @thevineclimber the small Victorinox knife actually works really good for cutting that plastic. I did get alot of people commenting on the small knife though. 😆 🤣 😂
      As long as your not speeding or causing trouble, you shouldn't have any problems with cops. I seen cops more because of weight stations. I also did government loads every so often, which sometimes had police check in at the gate. If you are worried about it, I would just go with your gut Instinct.

    Great video Anne. Welcome to the confusing world of local knife laws. In the UK it is reasonably clear, but enforced in a confusing way. Our laws state that a folding knife (non-locking, non-assisted opening) with a CUTTING EDGE of no longer than 3 inches is OK to carry without reason. BUT there are reports of some police officers measuring the whole blade length which puts some of the otherwise legal knives into the non-legal carry group. I try to stay legal when in public places and at work. I carry any of my SAKs from 91mm and smaller with the Pioneer X Alox, Huntsman and Explorer in rotation. I always have my Midnite Manager unless I am flying.

    • @thevineclimber
      @thevineclimber  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oh, so they like, put a ruler along the sharp part of the blade and kind of roll the blade out on the ruler? I didn't even consider that!! From what I'm hearing from other commenters from the US it sounds like similar questions happen with enforcement around here. Some people don't care and that includes the police! A good resource while traveling is Knife Rights’ Legal Blade app. They usually keep up to date on knife laws in most areas. The app does show 2.5 inches as the limit in Chicago. Oddly enough, you apparently can carry a cane sword. That would surprise an assailant! And there’s nothing like looking like a Sherlock Holmes villain, when you open a bag of chips.

The blue one, whatever one that was, but back from when they were all blue, not half-and-half, was my everyday carry for EVER. I got rid of it so long ago and I keep meaning to make a video about it, because I feel like it's actually kind of meaningful. Such a great tool. I would just bring the knife. If the measurement is so close to the cutoff, you probably have a good case to argue, because of the precision and tolerances for the measurement (assuming anyone would care in the first place).
    Here in Germany it is forbidden to carry any locking, one hand opening blade. Technically that would include the multi tool I carry in my pocket, but I don't think I'll get in trouble with it. These regulations all tend to be a bit unclear. For example you wouldn't be able to carry a fixed blade knife here, when it has a blade length of more than 12 cm (around 5 inches I think), but you are allowed to carry tools. For example a machete. It functions just as well as a normal knife and is way longer than 12 cm, but since it is considered a tool, you can carry the machete, but wouldn't be allowed to carry a chef knife.
    I believe the such a depth gauge like ruler is called a rule (and the person using it the ruler), if my bit of wood working knowledge serves me right.

    • @thevineclimber
      @thevineclimber  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wow thank you for this comment! Yes, these regulations always end up with confusion. What if you buy a knife - how can you get it home? If scissors are ok and you take apart the scissors, is that now a knife?

      @@thevineclimber As for the scissors, possibly yes. But it would be a real headache to get a final judgement, when someone has been charged for that.
      You can transport knifes, but the knife can not be accessible for use. In general you either have the knife sealed in it's packaging such that you need some other tool to open it. Or you must carry the knife in some sort of secure enclosure. What exactly that means is not so clear.
      Some courts have considered a backpack to be sufficient, but some are of the opinion that you actually need to use a locked box.

    Hi Anne, great video as usual. Knife laws do vary from state to state. Here in NYC the blade length is 4in or less. A knife with a pocket clip is illegal. Gravity knives, stilettos, or switch blades are illegal.
    My son is NYPD cop & cops don't carry rulers so how do they measure blades. Here & probably most places they use the 4 finger rule. They place the knife from the hinge & place it across their 4 fingers. If it's shorter your ok.
    So !!! My general rule is out of sight out of mind.

      Out of sight out of mind sounds good but then the challenge becomes keeping it out of sight. I think I would rather just be sure everything is OK. But they don't make it easy! Surprisingly the cop said swiss army knives are not really on my list of weapons type of knives. He let him go with the knife. Probably not, but I still don't want to risk it.) I carry a Manager for that reason, which is like a 1.5" blade so fully safe. How you carry yourself is just as important as what you carry...maybe moreso. I once made a run to the ATM and Family Dollar without removing a knife that was over my city's blade length limit from my pocket. The guy who used the ATM before I did was obviously an LEO. I acted normally. No worry. I'd venture a guess that most LEOs don't like having to enforce such a stupid (and frankly unconstitutional) law. They do have a lot of discretion, and it would probably take a real jerk of a bad apple to arrest someone solely for carrying a knife with a blade that's 0.07 inches over the length limit.
    That said, I keep the blade length under three inches. That'll certainly change if I move out of this city. And any place that isn't okay with me having three inches of blade is one I'll stay out of.
    AKTI is my go-to resource for navigating the complex and sometimes confusing laws of different states.
    Thanks for this video!

    Anne, I causally looked at Chicago policy on Stop and Frisk and it seems without probable cause they don’t. Looked at Doug Ritter’s Legal Blade app and interesting you can open carry a lot of knives,so dangle your Swiss Champ on a lanyard off your purse strap and it seems you would be legal. Intent has a lot to do with how most LEOs treat people.
    Interestingly, according to the app, you can conceal carry a 2.5” single bladed fixed blade, so a Pikal knife is legal? And it seems there is no restriction on sword canes?? 🤔🧐Remember 911 was carried out with box cutters so all this legal wringing of hands does little for public safety other than to create an illusion that bad people can’t harm you because they are going to obey the law? No, only law abiding citizens obey the laws, like yourself, who now has to be concerned if there no locking SAKs violates the law… again 🤔🧐!!

    hm...In my home country (and in the northern neighbouring too, as i was able to check their laws) there is an important difference between carry and transport in the law. In your pocket would be carry, in a snap or velcro closed belt holster it would be carry.
    In a closed backpack pocket (with a zipper for example) it's transport.
    The difference is that transport means "in a closed container" and a closed handbag, backpag, fannypack... all counts as transport.
    So what i would probably do (even though i won't ever be in the area of chicago) is to either put it into my backpack or put on a fannypack or something simliar, so i would not "carry" but "transport".
    Or put a 58mm model in my pocket.
    As for measuring: you can also go the other way: mark the length on the ruler, and hold the tip of the blade to the mark.
    With the caliper it's more easy: use the depth gauge it has the same way: open the caliper to the length you want to measure and the thin long extention that comes out the bottom is what the blade length should be.

    • @thevineclimber
      @thevineclimber  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Wow, this is extremely informative; thank you so much! I didn't see anything about the difference between carry and transport in Chicago. But clearly if you buy a new kitchen knife in a store, you're gonna have to get it to your house somehow.
      Oh, my goodness. Thank you for telling me about the calipers. I feel like that's something that I knew, but a fact that I never used.
      Does your entire country use the same knife laws?

    • @nirfz
      @nirfz 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@thevineclimberYes, and they are pretty easy at the moment.
      The transport and carry thing in my country is mainly for guns as there are only a few knife things forbidden: knives that look like a different item when in their sheath or folded. (knives that "pretend to be something else")
      Any laws like that are generally made as federal laws in my country. Where the federal states laws differ are mainly things like house building law details and "less important" stuff like that.
      But our minister for the interiour announced a few days ago that he wants to change the weapons law in terms of knives and forbid the carry of a lot of knives.
      (Because there were two homicides in the last month with knives. Which the law he wants to make would not have prevented anyways)
