It’s a crime MLF isn’t a household name in the world of guitar. He’s now touring with Stu Hamm doing the music of Jeff Beck across Europe..sure wish that show would come to the states.
I remember Michael Lee Firkins and his guitar playing and style..I am 58 now and he came out when a lot of other great players did..but he was relatively unknown but 1 of my friends was an amazing guitarist and we used to listen to all of those great players..totally different style from the Greg Howe and Paul Gilbert and Ritchie Kotzens of the time..I am so glad I was alive and was around and learning to play guitar back then.. the best of ever times for me. Thank you for this video.
That first album is incredible. I've checked out the albums after, but they sound very different to me. Great lesson, I've honestly never even been able to visualise in my mind how he's playing that riff! Makes sense now, super creative.
great !!! .... your lessons and remarks are always brilliant ....... i love MLF , man i had really trouble to work on the song Hula Hoops also from his first album ... so unique phrasing ... thx
1-5-9 shapes require a wide stretch and can be tricky for some. In the opening riff the notes on the G string (E F#) can also be played on the B string. It introduces string skipping, but it narrows down the stretch. Btw, great vids on this channel, glad they showed up in my suggestions.

NOTE: Slight correction at 06:53 I play 17th fret on the E string when it should be 16th fret 👍
The Michael Lee Firkins albums still holds up today. One of the greatest albums Shrapnel released.
