We dug our trampoline hole about 25 years ago...and just UN-dug it to get all of the rotting boards out we used...sure wish we would have known about this back then!! I thought we might have to put a cement barrier or retaining wall blocks, but this has worked out GREAT!!! My husband wasn't really onboard until I showed him the video and how relatively easy this was going to be. He was impressed, too!! When we originally dug ours out (the full depth, and all by hand and wheelbarrow) one of our teenage sons and about 4 of his buddies agreed to dig it out if we hosted the Homecoming dinner/dance for their group of 10 at our house. AGREED!! It took them 3 afternoon/evenings and lots of hamburgers on our part. Well worth it!!
Yes, it was worth it! I've replace the trampoline mat twice and had to do a little maintenance with the wire mesh that we put on to retain the dirt (re-attaching it to the frame with zip ties), but besides that it's been almost maintenance free.
We like your idea of putting mesh and ground cloth around the trampoline. What kind of mesh and cloth did you use? Can you please explain a little more how you did that? Did you zip tie the mesh? Did you poke holes through the cloth to zip tie it to the mesh? Thank you
Here's some information about the wire mesh and cloth: I first attached some heavy wire mesh (not chicken wire but the heavier mesh with straight wires creating small square spaces) around the trampoline and then as far as the cloth goes... it is a landscaping fabric that has woven plastic fibers. Search for: "Master Gardner 447 4x250 Landscape Fabric" (www.mastergardner.com/commercial-fabric.html) and you should see something similar. Our roll was 6' x 100' so we folded it vertically and horizontally and it worked out to fit pretty well. I attached the fabric to the wires with zip ties after poking holes through the plastic fibers. I used plastic zip ties, but if I were to do it over again, I would us metal zip ties. The plastic ones pop off eventually and have to be replaced. I'm replacing them with metal ones. Highly thinking about this. My 10 year old wanted a trampoline for her birthday so I just ordered it. Trying to find ways to keep it wind safe. It comes with a safety net so I was thinking of doing what you guys did but also teathering the net down. Gets pretty windy here. Too bad I just had my 5 room workshed torn down a few months ago. Could have made a fun playroom with foam floors, trampoline and swing from the rafters. Lol
Did you notice any difference in the bounce of the trampoline. I am reading that air tunnels must be added to allow the air to escape to ensure bounce is not lost?
If you use the mats over the springs (as you should) then, yes the bounce will be less if the trampoline is flush with the ground and you don't have air tunnels. Another option would be to leave it 6 inches above the ground, so the air can get in from the sides.

You see, I don't want my time spent installing it to be longer than the time that is spent in use by my nephews! Not trying to be the pessimist but; UNCLE SPENDS THIRTY DAYS INSTALLING = NEPHEWS SPEND THIRTY MINUTES JUMPING AROUND ON IT!!! The inevitable question that arises sooner rather than later will be, "who's gonna dig that thing up so we can throw it away?" No, you don't have to dig a drain trench. I dug the lower trench because my neighbor's were worried about water standing in the hole even though it only took about 2 hours to drain without the trench after a big rainstorm. The upper trench I dug just to help drain my yard after a heavy rain.
It took me 3 years to dig 17 feet around to sink my above ground pool. The only thing I'm digging now days is to put a tree in at 61. My grandkids would love this in the ground, hum.....
Does anyone every bounce off it and hit the fence? I'm looking to put in a sunken trampoline but worry that the only spot I have for it, is too close to a cinder block wall on one side and a concrete slab on the other. (but from the pictures I've seen on the internet of where other people have placed them, I think maybe I'm being over cautious.) Also, a lot of the 14-15ft wide ones that I've priced, seem to come with a 200-250lb max weight, but it seemed like you had tons of people on yours at the same time. What did you pay for the trampoline? Any idea what your weight rating is? Thanks.

That was a concern of ours, we were closer to our property line than we had thought, but we needed to put up the fence for other safety reasons and to keep the HOA out. As for the price, well we got the trampoline free from friends that moved away (free trampoline but paid for it in time putting it in the ground), so I don't know how much it cost or the weight rating. We try to keep it to only 4 kids on it max but sometimes that gets ignored... when there's a bunch of little kids on it you have to worry more about them knocking each other around.
