It's not really a Christmas special but it's Christmas.
This is, sort of, how an episode of Secrets of the Motorway is put together. Come along on a journey of discovery and learn of the magic of youtube, or.. all of the things you don't normally get to see and how editing saves the day.
If you've ever wondered what goes into making those "simple" TH-cam videos then this might offer some insight as to what goes on.

Really enjoyed the channel this year John and hopefully you'll continue. Have a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year. PS. If you are having trouble thinking about a new series, how about Today's Roman Roads, they are everywhere.
Especially during the winter months, do you have enough time to capture enough footage in 1 trip? I'd imagine it already takes a lot of time traveling to the right spots and setting things up etc
I know you don't take suggestions but shouldn't the M6 be multiple episodes and should start on a special number (like ep.50 - 55), only because its the longest of them all
I have zero interest in cars, minimal interest in driving and road infrastructure and yet I watch and enjoy every one of your videos. You do great work. Thank you for that, and for the look behind the scenes. Brilliant stuff. Merry Christmas
Same here Rag 'N' Bone I don't drive and never have prob at 52 too late to learn BUT i have been all over the U.K as a Passenger (my grandad was a lorry driver so sometimes i got to go out on runs with him as a kid prob would have got the sack if his company found out lol) NOw my partner drives so seen a lot of Motorways and John makes a boring subject interesting as we all tend to zip along on the motorways (concentrating on the road ahead as you should as a driver) and we miss all the sort of things he points out in his vids!
Rozelle seems as delightfully goofy as you, Jon. It was so much fun to come along with you both on this one. Thanks for what you do, I’m so glad to have found your channel!
You've turned a rather boring subject into really interesting stories John, and it's nice to see how much work you put in behind the scenes. Merry Christmas and thanks for all the videos :)
It's like the difference between good and bad teachers; they can make the most interesting subject into utter drudgery or they can turn something that on the face of it is uninteresting into something really enticing to know more about. John is the latter.

Just like the TH-camr Tom Scot, you have the amazing skill of taking a seemingly boring subject matter and making it entertaining and fascinating.
I'm working backwards through a lot of your back catalogue, Jon...I started with the Scottish motorways (where I live and inadvertently found your channel).
The content is interesting in many ways I'd not expected, and the delivery of the material in very entertaining. Carry on doing your thing 👍🏻

I always enjoy when Content Creators give viewers a "peak behind the curtain" and shows how much hard work actually goes into these. Way more than just drive to a location and film. But the result is a wonderfully unique channel that I'm glad the almighty Algorithm introduced me to.
Interesting take on your series. Btw, you can get teleprompter apps for tablet computers and camera stand mounts for tablets, if you think that might help with your lines.

Been watching this series since the first couple, when I had my fingers crossed it would be made into a full series. Love these videos so much, you have a style that makes even quite a drab subject like motorways really interesting and engaging! Thanks for all you do!

Oh, this was really interesting, thank you. Went down the Pathetic Motorways rabbit hole a few years ago, and was always intrigued by gist slip roads, so this series just absolutely hit the spot. Always suspected there was a lot of footwork getting to those motorway side locations. Stunned you get those amazing drone shots from the little DJI. Brilliant series. Genuinely, I didn't realise I needed these videos in my life. What a gem of a random find of the Arena Essex video many months ago.
Absolutely love the way you produced and edited this 'fly on the wall' documentary. Having the interviewer off camera and talking naturally to you throughout your day, brilliant! You've managed to turn what could be one of the most boring subjects on earth into an extremely interesting topic! Just wondering what your plans are once you've exhausted motorways! 😊
When your first video started playing for me I was a bit like "why the hell am I watching a video about service stations" then I became hooked and I've watched just about every video since!

Excellent video, Jon. Absolutely love the series of the motoways/service stations...and yes, in a nerdy way, find them fascinationg. Being a lorry driver, not so much the service stations as the majority are complete sh*tholes (literally) . But yes, 10/10 on your content. (Kudos as well, to your camera lady...the patience of a saint).
@Auto Shenanigans your edits are pretty good, content excellent, video length spot on. You clip to a different angle, location or subject way before boredom could even think about arriving!!

Great to see the makings of your videos. Your trusty Saab must have some serious mileage on it now 👏🏻 suggestion for your next “series” could be abandoned railway yards or lines as there’s plenty to go at there. Would link in nicely to some of the subject matter in your motorway vids 😊
The trusty Saab 9-5 has now been replaced, it got to 188,000 miles. I think im doing 2000-3000 miles a month... stupid!

I came across your channel earlier this year............wasn't looking for anything of the sort, but I do look forward to each episode, It's quirky & informative but most of all very enjoyable to watch. One of your best. Mesmerised I was. Particularly enjoyed at 5:10 the nervous voiceover “Where’s the motorway, what are we doing” sounding like she was thinking “is this guy a youtuber or an axe murderer”.

This is excellent. Very interesting and informative. Nicely paced, real world and easy to follow. Now please slow down to this pace in your "normal" episodes.
Brilliant show, John! Pre-, filming, and post-production are the details that make or break a series. Describing your techniques in your own unique way are invaluable for the rest of us looking to reach your high-level of quality. This documentary is one of the best "how-to" I have seen presented; go for an YT award, mate!
Thank you for being so indepth in this piece in how you create these marvelous videos. And thank you for sticking with the series; these are the same time/motivation challenges that I faced in past jobs involving TV and radio production.

What made you choose roads as your subject of interest? I must admit I had no desire to learn about them until I stumbled across your channel. Oh jeez watching you take the 9 5 through that ford brings back painful memories . I was driving my year old 9 5 one evening with my 17 year old daughter and came to some water across the road in a village . I told her watch me and learn how to cross a flooded road . Do I need to go on ? The electrics actually failed not the engine . The green flag recovery bloke checked the engine and said it was dry . Now several weeks later the Saab dealer rang to say the engine was ruined with water in it. I said nope it was dry and I had a witness . Oh yes said the service manager his mistake,it was the car beside mine ! My daughter still reminds me of how to drive through flood water so many years later lol
