CORRECTION: Dogs do love being petted on the head. The problem with it is when humans approach a dog from above them and try immediately to pet them on the head. That can be perceived by the dog as intimidating or aggressive and rightly so. When a human wishes to pet a dog, they should first allow the dog to come to them and not the other way around. Then, start by extending the hand to pet under the chin and cheek of the dog. If the dog likes it (and they'll let the human know), then you can gently make your hand move up to the head of the dog, down it's back, and pat the side around the shoulder. Slow, gentle deliberate movements. Again, dogs do like to be petted on the head by humans they have come to trust. They love it because it feels good. If it didn't feel good to them, they would pull away, tense up, or give other signs of discomfort. A good way to tell if a dog likes how you're petting him is if his mouth is open into what looks like a smile and the eyes are soft and half closed. The ears are also an indication. If the ears are back, flat, not up in an alert mode, this is a sign of a relaxed dog. AND I know all these things and much more because I have spent (and still do) countless hours with dogs of various breeds, sizes and temperaments.
My dog does the exact same thing ; much like my last dog that lived a full and happy life being rubbed and stroked everyday and night, from head to tail ,paws to belly and anywhere else he showed that it felt good. We are not making any mistakes.🐾🐾
i rescued an old westie highland white terrier "westie" I would massage her shoulders, she found it really helpful. She would sit in front of me, so she could have chosen to walk away at any time. She would have had me there for hours if she could have. Im disabled too now after a terrible accident and 2 operations. My dad is reike master and did therapy sessions with her. She enjoyed that too. She was a breeder on a puppy farm and an beautiful soul, another dog lover said, that you made the last 6 years of her life the best. Yep. Same here. With my mother/brother's shared dog. The first one was an angel 😇. She would love to lay on the floor with me, (her on her bed, and me on the floor), and would grab my hand, trapping it, while I told her how much I loved her. While stroking her soft head. RIP, baby girl xxx

Mine does too! Also when I'm driving and she is with me, I stop at a traffic light she runs her head under my hand. It's not on the steering wheel so why not? She will also lay her head on my shoulder.
My dog constantly pushes head head underneath people’s hands and leaves it there for pats, rather than moving so the hand is sitting on another part of her body. And often when I do pay her for an extended time, she will periodically move so that I pay her head as well as her body.
When I stop petting my dog's head, he comes back to my hand and nudges me to continue! He clearly LOVES me petting his head! His paws however, are a different story!
This is the silliest crap I've heard! This person needs to meet my dogs! My lab absolutely loves her, and my blue healer believes that the harder the better!

Yeah I agree with some others here. Dogs are always putting the top of their head in my hand rather than me putting my hand on their heads. It all depends on the dog and how they are treated, but they have always warmed up and sought head pets from me.
This is silly! We had dogs for 50 years. They love to be petted on any part of their bodies! Belly is the best. One leg will kick automatically! Lay on their backs and tickle on the stomach. This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. I run a dog rescue/sanctuary. A no kill facility so babies that aren’t for what ever reason adopted out have a place to live out their lives running in the woods, swimming in a pond, creeks camping out with my wife and I. I’ve been around dogs for over 60 years. I’ve got dogs that have been thru horrible mistreatment by previous owners. I’ve never had one that didn’t give off every sign of loving to have a gentle, loving head pat. It’s just my opinion of course but I’ve been doing this a long time.
Smelly Belly knew that people would disagree with this video. And when people disagree they jump on and write comments. And this is great for the TH-cam algorithm. Look at how many views this video got right away. So yeah pretty smart.
I just wrote the same thing. I wish I had read yours first and saved myself the time. (But then again, at least I added to the algorithm's data for the creators).
So when my Lab comes to me and pushes my hands upwards with her snout, and only stops when I scratch her head which she thoroughly enjoys, and when I stop, immediately uses her snout to get my hands to continue - I am a bad dog owner or my dog is a masochist? - this video is off key for owners who are imprinted on their dogs., and it should be noted that this is general rules only for how to approach petting of dogs unfamiliar to you.. Part of allowing you to be imprinted on your dog is that you know what they like, and would never do anything to make them uncomfortable, and with dog personalities and likes and dislikes being different it stands to reason that some dog like head scratching or petting of their head area by their imprinted owner.
I believe it's different from a dog to another. We have two, a Golden Retriever and a German Shepherd. The retriever looooves being pet on the head. If you stop, he will move his whole head under your hand, telling you that he wants you to continue. Same for the GS, but interestingly, his behaviour changed regarding ears. As a puppy he used to not alllow us near his ears at all (while still liking head pets). After he grew up, he started enjoying fingers playing in his ears so much that he makes facial expressions and sounds similar to a human who is really enjoying a professional back massage. So, even for the same dog, their preferences change.
Whenever I start petting my dog anywhere, she immediately rolls over and shows me her belly then waves her back legs around until I rub the belly. Or she’ll smack me with a front paw until I start. She does love her beard rubbed/itched
my dog loves her head being stroked . she dosent want me to stop and nudges me for more .. I think you mean approaching a dog unexpectedly!! a true dog lover will get the love and affection from their dog and have a strong bond that trust will always be there .
So dogs feel about us petting their heads like we felt about older people pinching or squeezing our cheeks when we were children. Got it. But dogs are just soooo cute!
Great topic. Subtle signs of dog being unhappy or ignored excellent. Wrong though about yawning…yawning signals a brain state change which could be displacement behavior or relaxation and enjoyment. Asking viewers to join up front is silly…we haven’t seen the video yet and it will totally change our feed!!!!
This is a good video. My dog loves being petted, but hates being petted on the head. I can see when others try to pet his head that they are completely looming over him and he pulls back. If they ask why he does that I ask how they would like a giant looming over them trying to grab their head!
I have a service dog and despite that she is wearing a vest with patches on it stating service dog do not pet or distract there are a lot of certain people who doesn’t want to respect this and act if they don’t see the service vest.. this is the most challenging thing I have to deal with and it makes my very upset.. I have to guard my dog from this behavior and train myself on how to deal with these insistent behaviors.. what should I do??, any advice??
I have had the same. Drives me nuts. I think the idea is that as the dog is clearly WELL trained people can touch them without fear of getting bitten by the dog. However, the owner may bite!! I fancy covering mine in anti-climb paint!! Especially as it is the head that gets touched coz the body is mostly under a vest. Just start swearing like you have Tourettes, and wear a hi-vis yourself in a crowd. If you do shout at a human - large or junior (of reading age) you are entitled to protect your disability aid (dog) as it is clearly stated on the vest. People also don't seem to know that a dog that is walking without growling or looking around or lunging is actually working very hard and needs to concentrate. Good Luck!
One of my dogs forcefully pushes her head into my hand, asking me to stroke her head and she definitely loves it. I always tell people not to stroke them on their head as their first interaction as it is intimidating and feels threatening to them. In fact, especially with children, I will ask them if I can do something and when they say yes, I will suddenly move my hand towards the top of their head. They usually flinch away. Then I ask how that felt; was that a bit scary? and they would say yes. I then explain how that is how a dog feels when the are suddenly patted on the top of their head and show them how to show the back of their hand and let the dog sniff it and all going well, to stroke the dog under the chin and around to their ears, over their shoulders and sides. Once a relationship is built and they trust you, and you are having a loving moment with them, that they enjoy being stroked on their heads. That is what I have found and I've lived with dogs almost my whole life, and I'm now in my 60s. I have a lot of dogs who live with me and they will take it in turns coming up on the sofa next to me, or on my lap, for cuddles.
You are right. We believe it is also threatening to touch other humans head. It's aggressive and used as power over others And you are advanced in your sensitivity and awareness of other creatures on our planet.🌿
All dogs, like all humans, are individuals with individual likes and dislikes. Personally, I always enjoyed having my head rubbed, especially by my wife.
My dog is friendly to strangers but he always pushes his ears back and turns his head away so I started telling people he doesn’t like being petted by strangers.
If they hate it so much, why do so many of them stick their heads in your hand? My dog will actually shove my hand from another body part to his head with his paw for head scritches & nose me insistently if I stop....does that mean he's a masochist?? I don't think so.
This is true- the head is the most vulnerable place on a dog that they would naturally protect.. My recently adopted 5 yr old rescue Husky loves being petted everywhere EXCEPT the head, and- he cannot stand his paws being touched (or even looked at, it seems! :D ha...). He will create subtle moves to gently steer me away from his head, such as present me his backside to scratch.. ..(ha..).. :/ .. Anyway, he is an extremely anxious dog, but he melts with shoulder rubs/pets , and has dozed off to sleep within minutes a few times after this!
Also, if you watched this vid, never approach an unknown-to-you dog with an open hand. I was shocked this creator depicted people poking at dogs with fingers moving all over the place. Closed fist only so the dog can smell you first without fingers being at risk of being bitten (off). Really surprised by that clearly faulty advice.
This video is somewhat true that dogs may see hands reaching their head as a threat given the size of us human, but what I did is to stay low (squat, sit or lay with them on the floor) and my two dogs would even fight to get a pet l, including in their heads.
I don't pat my dog's head, but I do give him a gentle rub behind an ear. It's clear from his body language that he actually enjoys the contact, as long as I don't go silly and continue for too long
Silly video to be honest. You can pet your dog on their heads, absolutely, no problem. What you can not do is reach for their head immediately. You'll see the dog pull away. Let them sniff your hand first, crouch down to get closer to their level, pet the shoulders and chest and then make your way to the head. Nothing wrong with that at all.
I don't know if a dog wants you stroking his ears or muzzle, and I also doubt they enjoy being patted on the head but plenty of dogs sure seem to enjoy stroking on top of the head, provided you don't pet hard and pull the scalp back with each stroke. I think they enjoy slow gentle head petting.
My dogs love having their head, scratched and petting the sides of their face, especially it’s not like when you meet a new dog that you go with your hand over their head, which isn’t that of aggression. This is the stupidest misinformation if your dog makes happy sounds when you’re petting it on its head or the side of its face was scratching its ears, you know it’s loving it if it leans towards you
Sometimes when I'm just laying down on the couch with my hand out, my dog will approach me and sort of rub her head on my palm in a very demanding way and I pull my hand away instead of petting her then she starts to throw tantrums
The commenters on this message board here have the right ideas. We know our canine psychology as good as any humans can know it. That's why we watch this channel in the first place! (I think this video was one of those "Let's put together a half-baked and debatable pronouncement to see how many viewers react." It's an old advertising/publicity ploy to gauge the interest of consumers.)
My pitbull loves being petted on the head and she has a big smile like she is in ecstasy. I never saw a dog that loves to be petted as much as her and she will even pull my hand over with her paw.
Every single dog I had in my life would shove their head under my palm for me to pet them. And my youngest even asks for a head massage with a special massage ball when she sees that I'm using it. She's just obsessed with head pets and scratches. And by the way she's extremely reactive rescue dog and hates unnecessary attention. But sure if you haven't made friends with someone else's dog, never put your hands above them.
What a load of bs. If it's your dog they most likely love it nut probably not from strangers. Dogs love scratches especially behind the ears and mine comes to me to get head scratches and absolutely loves hugs too. He always comes to get both. My experience, over 70 years of dog ownership.
You are sitting on grass or whatever, and your dog sits next to you without prompting, and leans against you. This makes it almost certain that they will actually like a hug. Don't overdo it though. Patting on head. Again, this will vary from dog to dog, but it is not good practice to do it to stranger dog. Dogs can get headaches, especially an older dog. So gentle massaging their scalp can help. It depends on the dog, but if they have a good and healthy relationship with you, they will move away if they are not in the mood. Your height and largeness is potentially a threat to any dog. Though you are still their leader, you don't need to be a tyrant. Know you dog well enough, and he/she knowing you well can mean some 'rules' like head petting, can be "broken". Lie on the grass on your back, with the dog right next to you. On your back with your neck and belly exposed in front of your dog sends a signal to them that you trust them with your life. The "an owner has to play the "Alpha dog" is sheer nonsense. I have NEVER known a dog to take advantage of it. You become more of a pal, a playmate, and can foster the idea that you are merely an older and wiser brother or sister, and not some arrogant tyrant. Use the "command" voice only for emergencies. [Such as a speeding car or motorbike, or suspicious food left on the ground which could be poisoned. Rare but it does happen]. Rescue dogs and ex-stray dogs will have developed a scavenging instinct. So even if the food is not poisoned, it could be full of harmful pathogens if it has been sitting there for a time.
Both my dogs love it in fact all my dogs I have owned even as a child all I repet all of my dogs love to be pet on the head it's actually how I get my oldest dog to sleep sometimes. Now a strange dog I wouldn't do that with unless it sniffs me first and checks me first but even then I get down to their level first so as not to seem a threat.
To a stranger dog... sudden touch in head make them feeling dominated and they become aggressive....but if we touch or approach the dog from behind there is definitely a bite will be happening. So for a dog who is a stranger ,just let it trust you and sniff you...then you can touch it neck, back and head also...but never from the back. For pet dogs...it is you who know best...but even sudden aproach from back make them insecure. This video is not made by a dog lover ,its only for likes n share.

My dog is friendly to strangers but he always pushes his ears back and turns his head away so I started telling people he doesn’t like being petted by strangers.
I don’t believe it either.
This is the most idiotic, rediculous, non-factual BS click bait about dogs on You Tube…..I’m speaking as an experienced dog trainer.
My dogs love their ears and jaws rubbed.
My dog loves her head rubbed. She closes her eyes and puts her head up as I do it
My dogs love having their heads petted and massaged. My oldest dog demands it.
So if dogs don't like the head pet.. why does my dog paw at my hand until I pet her head
Sounds like your pup’s making her own rules! 🐾
My dog loves it.
Great video
Also, if you watched this vid, never approach an unknown-to-you dog with an open hand. I was shocked this creator depicted people poking at dogs with fingers moving all over the place. Closed fist only so the dog can smell you first without fingers being at risk of being bitten (off). Really surprised by that clearly faulty advice.
My dog loves head petting and ear rubs. He knows when I let his head I also rub his ears 🤣
That's so sweet! 😊 It's like the perfect combo every time! 🐶❤️
Okay...😅
Nothing wrong with that at all.
excellent video
What? Dogs push tier heads to my hands and love their ears rubs, none rub?
I think it depends on their mood, especially if they haven't been for a walk.
Most dogs seem to like head rubs. Some dogs don't like their ears being touched.
My dogs love it
My dogs like me to rub between their eyes. They like their ears to be rubbed. I stop and they move closer.
My dog hates it when people other than me tries to pet her on her head. She will snap at anyone but me.
I have had dogs who loved head scratches & others who loathed it... depends on the dog.
Nope! Im not buying it.
What a load of bs. If it's your dog they most likely love it nut probably not from strangers. Dogs love scratches especially behind the ears and mine comes to me to get head scratches and absolutely loves hugs too. He always comes to get both.
My experience, over 70 years of dog ownership.
Bullshit. A dog will let you know if there’s anything bothering them about the way you touch them.
This is nonsense my dogs love their head petted.
Thanks for sharing! Every dog is unique-sounds like your pups know what they like! 😊🐶
Funny, without ever knowing any of this, I pet my dog in most ways suggested here, and never pet strange dogs unless they come to me, and many do.
All my dogs love getting pet on the stomach. They would actually roll over upside down to get stomach rubbed.
If it's on the Internet it must be true.😊
Are you sure you're not thinking of alligators
There are dogs that don't like it but the vast majority do.
This is stupid, a dog owner can tell when their dog is happy or not
My Yellow Labs absolutly love being petted on the head. Lol
It’s myth to me because my dogs are enjoying being petted their heads. They only liked massages on their heads or behind their ears.
Our dog likes it. He will come up and nudge your hand for pets
That’s so sweet! 🥰
My dog likes being pet on the head he falls asleep!!❤❤❤
That's true. Dogs love being rubbed behind their ears.
Both my dogs will nose their head under my hand if I stop petting them on the head, or scratching their ears.
i dont buy it my dogs sleeps when i massage their head..
I have four dogs and they all will force thier head under your hand if you quit petting them!
I use 2 have the perfect dog but I wouldn't allow ppl to approach her without either my permission or parents permission depending on age
My dogs like it
My dog insists on head petting. So I call bs.
My dogs demand that I rub their heads. I know because they force me to do it and get mad when I stop.
no, humans touching each other's heads is usually a form of intimidation or humiliation. I know what my dog likes, it only takes a little observation.
