UniFi OS uses a journaling file system now (the resiliency, as you mention), so unlike the early days of the Cloud Key Gen2, a battery backup is no longer needed. I remember what a huge improvement the battery was when the Gen2 came out. And unfortunately, I am still experiencing subsequent battery failures, but at least it doesn't corrupt the configuration.

Thanks for the update. So what is recommended to replace a USG if also running a cloud key gen 2 plus. Need to retain security cameras. I was thinking a dream machine SE. But don’t have the space.

You can do a drop in replacement with the UXG Lite or if you need failover/load balancing you can use the UXG Pro.

And now we have the UXG-Max almost the same as the UCG-Ultra to blur the lines further

I believe they rolled out an update for the cloud keys a few years ago that addresses the database issues and no long requires the battery. My cloudkey gen2+ battery stopped working a while ago, and either i need to go buy a lottery ticket, or the db issue is fixed.

They run off USBc, you could buy a large power bank and connect it in seriese between the power adapter and the Unifi device !

If you use a decent database thats not e.g sqlite, the database should not be able to be corrupted just by having an operation interupted. Same with a decent file system

Since ubiquity did such a great job with the lithium battery back up in the gen 2 cloud key. Let’s hope they don’t go down that path again. Makes me wonder how many swollen battery packs are still in the wild.

I've personally never seen it happen. I have at least four of them here that are hooked up and running and I've not had the issue. I'm not sure which conditions cause it but it doesn't happen to all the devices.

@@WillieHowe The Gen 2+ that I am running has a swollen battery and it won’t run off a POE. I need to change it out but just have not taken the time yet. It ran for approximately two years before the battery went bad. I have it powered by two amp USB-C power supply plugged into a battery back up. Not sure if they’ve made improvements on the battery since it first came out. I bought when they first were released.

Don't buy this stuff if you live in the UK. The returns process is done by sending stuff to the Netherlands. Your products get customs charges for returns! This stuff is garbage! I was offered instore credits to cover the customs charges! I will not be buying more items to send to the Netherlands! Very poor customer service.
