Same here! I bought the evo skies Espeon back in December and it is hands down my favorite artwork in a modern card. If it became worthless I’d be fine with the $120 I spent on it
I don't necessarily buy to sell down the road, but if I don't sell a single item I have, I will have a lot of fun ripping it all open over time. No regrets and no expectations other than having fun with it.
Best thing to invest, buy a COUPLE of sealed products and hold for YEARS. Don't scalp shelves, and dont try to resell in a week. Hold until these cards aren't printed anymore. Even Sword and Shield still shows up in stores.
I haven't listened to the whole video yet, but I'd say there's a big difference between sealed products and single cards. Sealed products always grow in value because they get rarer every time someone breaks them open (which happens daily). For this reason, it seems like the only risk to investing in sealed is that it may not grow as quickly or as high as other investments (ex. mutual funds).
It's best to mitigate that slower growth by making sure you already have maxed out your mutual funds/index fund investments BEFORE investing heavily in sealed. Sure the amount you put into sealed is at risk of being outpaced by traditional market vehicles, BUT I make the argument that you're in a hobby you enjoy + the delta is negligible when it comes to asset appreciation. Just a small cost of having fun.
Nobody likes to “lose” money but it’s astounding that a single card can have a stable value of $5,000 even before the crazy boom or any pullback. Nice to maximize when you can but don’t forget to celebrate the remarkable general success of the hobby.
Checking in from SOUTH DAKOTA!! TH-cam’s algorithm brought you across my screen just the other day, and your content’s drawn me in instantly!! Love it, can’t wait for the next one!
Here’s what I’ve always said. Base set was super in demand in 2020 and 2021. But it was because nobody thought it would be worth anything back in 98-99.. now adays everybody thinks it’ll be worth everything so they’re keeping their product sealed and safe. So eventually their won’t be the same “limited supply” as base set had. And the customer base will likely be people who already have that product because they were around when it came out.. hope that somewhat made sense :) oh and also it’s our generation who’s collecting the base set stuff cause it’s the stuff we had as kids. It’s possible kids now don’t keep their stuff in good condition or collect sealed product and will want their childhood sets in 20 years but who knows
Great points as always dude. Stores around me have been empty since Xmas. Seems like a weird time now, might be good to wait until everything settles down
one of my biggest regrets was just completely dropping pokemon after all the hype died down around 2021 and 2022, and its one of the mistakes ill definitely be learning from as time and time again pokemons shown their capabilities of completely taking the world by storm, so deep inside theres a part of me waiting for the market to crash and for everyone to forget about pokemon for another 2-3 years im just worried about others having the same mindset
I really like to compare it to the stock market. Singles are the single stocks, the fan favorite pokemon are your blue chips stocks and sealed are your etf and mutual funds. They all have different levels of risk and the best advise is surely to diversity in pokemon investments but also other investments. Kudos for the great quality content Phil!
At the end of the day a market crash doesn’t matter because it’s just cards, I’ll just keep ripping packs in secret on the weeks my ex wife has custody.

Thanks for being honest with pointing this out, within the last month I started buying and selling singles. It's good to hear and gather as much information and different variables when selling to not completely tank your own operation.
I definitely went a little crazy starting out my collection, but I've pulled way back now. I rarely pick up packs and have only bought a few singles this month. It's definitely fun to watch it rise in value, but you're right! Don't want to get burned here.
I just started collecting again (literally today) after decades and watching a bunch of videos to try and get some general knowledge again. I enjoyed your format and video style a lot. Subscribed, keep up the great work!
Hey Phillip, I’m a fellow Aussie, almost in my 30s and have watched your videos for a while now. I’ve always played the games but have observed the collecting side for a while. I’ve recently fallen victim to the hype and decided to actually invest a bit. Just wanted to say thank you for your videos as you are my go-to for advice. The effort, detail and ultimately the watchability of your videos is very much appreciated.
Brand new to pokémon card collecting and am very grateful to have found your channel to learn about the hobby. Hopefully the market lowers soon so I can have more chances on getting cards for my collection.
With every new set the cards look even more astonishing! I would buy all sets if I could, but I took your advise to just focus on some sets I really like. I also think a drop in prices overall is inevitable (and we need it to keep the hobby alive).
I started collecting last summer and your channel has definitely helped me navigate this hobby and not overspend. I feel like I’ve got a great little collection already while staying on a budget. Thanks for the great content!
In these crazy times, when prices for Pokemon cards seem to be exploding, it is especially important to act prudently and with foresight. As you mentioned, and I am also convinced of this, this hype period will come to an end at some point.
It is interesting how history repeats itself in the Pokémon card market. The analysis of past crashes and corrections really puts things into perspective. Markets naturally rise and fall, and I have been collecting cards for the last few months. However, stock shortages and scalpers driving up prices on ETBs and other products make it hard to find them.
Sword and Shield era, I was trying to collect every single card from every single set, but now I've just started focusing on the pokemon I like from each Scarlet & Violet set. Made it so much more joyful to collect instead of hunting for the money
I've just dove headfirst into this hobby, and wow-I'm learning so much every day from this channel! 🌟 Coming to you straight from Brazil, where the struggle with these new collections is absolutely brutal. 😩🔥
With all the hype right now, it's very easy to forget the gains made on a mediocre set could be very minimal. There will most likely be gains long-term but if you factor in how liquid an asset is, inflation, and all the time spent acquiring and reselling product, the gains made on a set that isn''t very desired might not be worth it. Thanks for the reminder Phil. :D
This is a great take! I rejoined this hobby back in 2024 right after shrouded fable came out, and nowadays my friends have been getting into it the past few weeks. Their mindset lately is that every single thing pokemon TCG related will indefinitely go up which I really disagree with. Once all the hype dies down and there are less scalpers (hopefully), I know for sure the prices will finally go down as well which is why im refraining from buying anything for the next few months (until the rockets set haha) until everything finally dies down. This is a video I definitely need to show my friends 😂
The question is will the price fall down under retail price? I don't think so and there is literally no example in all years of Pokémon this ever happen. In my opinion you are pretty safe if you buy at retail price. And you should always be ready to sell some products.
This is a really good point, and it would be super interesting to see what sealed box prices also did as a comparison for which investment might be safer in the long term. Love the content as always!
4:59 the next vintage boom will def be the Rocket set coming up after Journey Together. It’s the 25th anniversary of the OG Rocket set. Team Rocket cards are going to go up in value for sure.
Enjoying this hobby and the amazing cards is the main reason why I find investing so fun! I’m not mad about having some beautiful full arts that can go up in value with time, just having fun(:
I think this is one of my favorite videos so far - SUPER informative and eye opening. It's crazy to think people are thinking this hype is forever. Love the vintage examples. 🙌🏼
Prismatic Evolutions JUST released, so it has at least a 2-year print run ahead of it. As more people open packs, more supply will enter the market, bringing down prices. I try to follow the rule of buying a set 6-9mos after release when prices have stabilized.
Thanks for the analysis I think I felt this way going in, hence all these boxes full of bulk cards that aren’t very valuable. Now just being smart investing in cards I actually want rather than buying a ton of booster boxes hoping to rip one
I just started collecting back in December. I found your channel and been watch to learn and make smarter decisions. I've been having fun making a master set of Obsidian Flames and working on making a pokedex Binder with extras i got. Gonna work on Steller Crown next for Master set. Keep up the awesome work and keep everyone informed.

Ok thank you Soo much!! I feel so much smarter, I just got back into the hobby a couple months ago but lacked knowledge but your channel is so helpful!!!
I like this take because it helps bring people back down from the hype. It’s a good way to remind everyone that a reset will be coming when the hype is down. I always found the single card buying high risk as opposed to sealed booster boxes. The booster boxes seem to be a guaranteed growth as each year progresses
Watching pokemon tcg TH-camrs took me back to the hobby, i use to collect in 2016 for the xy and stopped after sun and moon, but now im really excited again and I'm really close to finish my silver tempest master set.
That’s the problem with the hobby. Majority of us collect to keep, enjoy, play and store. The other side of the hobby is about reselling, sealed and investing and that’s what’s ruining the hobby.
I worked at a hobby shop during the pandemic. Market was absolutely crazy. But the downfall was brutal. We definitely are in a spike right now and I don’t see it lasting
The current state of Pokemon card collecting honestly feels like a pump and dump scheme to me. Everyone gobbling up Prismatic Evolutions & Surging Sparks to then turn around and hype cards from Scarlet & Violet base set to get those numbers up. I’ve even been seeing people gas up Shrouded Fable when just a month ago, nobody cared about it. Don’t get me wrong, those sets have gorgeous art work that are certainly underrated. But the timing of their “appreciation” feels so artificial and predatory. I hope TPC prints every set this year into the ground to humble the community again and so the real collectors, players and hobbyists can enjoy themselves without shelling out the amount of money it takes to pay your electricity bill or worse, car note on a single card
Best advice I've gotten so far from this channel is to only invest in cards I love. So absolute worst case scenario is if prices dip I still have a cool card for my collection!
2021.. thats 3 4 years ago. So if it crashes you buy more.. so when we are riding the next rocket in 2029 or definitely 100% sure in 2030 with the 30th year anniversary edition. Investing smartly is buying stuff for 40€ and when it hits 340 like the bubble mew just did in few months you sell and buy a whole lot of new stuff that can start rising from the ground up. Rinse and repeat
It's exciting to see the market boom like it has, especially for collectors who've been in the hobby for a little while, but I'm ready for things to go back to normal and be able to buy sets at MSRP from retail or card shops. I feel like the disappointment for casual fans has made the hobby feel all about money which is unfortunate
Just subscribed yesterday after seeing a few vids and being new to collecting. Thanks for the informative content has been really helpful in starting my collection.
It’s always hard to gauge what modern cards will boom especially when it came to the “waifu” cards but it’s definitely smart to invest when fewer people are in the market or when hype dies down
Love the content today. I’m holding onto two of every sealed item in this set. Same thing I did with 151. My plan is long-term, 10 year minimum. I know it’s not a huge position but I think it’s worth holding especially if you can get it at or under MSRP right now
Definitely a tough time to get into Pokemon TCG. I think have a clear mindset of why you are getting into Pokemon helps along with a set budget of what you're happy to spend/lose if it came to it.
Thanks for all the insight. As a newcomer to the hobby, coming into the hobby at the wrong time, I like hearing the history of this hobby. I'm wondering if booster boxes have a chance to dip as well? Keep up the great work.
I just started my 151 collection, only collected the promo cards for now. I want to buy packs and boxes but I can't afford to do that. So now I will only buy single cards. Since it's really hard to find 151 packs and boxes. Thanks for the continously streams of videos. I appreciate it a lot. :)
That yveltal is such a nice card! There's a lot of singles I'd like to buy at the moment for my personal collection, but I'm going to wait a bit for the pullback... Hope I don't regret it!
Its always amazing 🎉 how you see pokemon as a hobby and as an investment in their own respective definitions :) Your mental analysis is pretty logical and direct!!!! Keep it up
Best thing I did was learn market cycles for stocks and shares. You can literally apply bull and bear market cycle trends towards the Pokemon tcg market cycles. It's kind of like having a cheat sheet 😅
Just like in any other investment vehicle, buy when the price is low, sell when the price is high. A basic understanding of economics is all you need in this hobby.
I caught myself saying that exact phrase that I am good at making calls on investments or adding to my collection at the right time before the price spikes. We need to remain vigilant so we don’t get burned when the hype dies down.
Beautiful Yveltal card! ❤ Yeah I'm just collecting cards/products that check both boxes of 1) I love them and wouldn't mind sitting on them for 20+ years and 2) at the time of purchase I want that product to be at a price I feel I could sell reasonably quickly (so good liquidity)
Another thing to think of is vintage pokemon didn't have full arts so there is more demand for those cards. Vintage is more risk because of the art and high price point. I do think latias and moonbreon are overpriced right now. Modern will definitely have iconic cards that will always hold value
Same as many have mentioned here, I'm going to only focus on cards that I like. Anything else is a bonus (although whether or not i can bring myself to sell my loved cards is a whole other topic)
I keep buying the cards for the hobby and the arts, i try to keep away from the investment mentality as much as possible, though it is hard sometimes !
My way of enjoying the hobby is to buy the cards that I find attractive due to their art, if the price increases it is an extra point but it is not the main thing.
I really got back into this hobby at the worst time. Difficult to find anything in stores and you have to pay above MSRP to even get your hands on anything. Stood in 3 lines the morning Prismatic dropped, and still couldn’t get anything 😂
yeah I made this mistake in 2021 when I pulled the Charizard Vmax from Shining fates, and decided to hold it when it was selling for I think $500 raw. ended up selling for only $200😭
I think the vintage craze was furthered helped by Logan Paul and his million dollar Charizard. The bull we are witnessing, I believe, is due to the TCG pocket game. That’s what me and others I’ve seen made us get into the physical world. Now just imagine a year from now they release a set based on those cards? 📈
Such good advices! I never buy hits, if I get some I keep them, but I concentrate my collection on rattata, maushold and miltank! 🐀 They don't have a big following but at least I can find them easily and the illustrations are so cute ❤

What if it's already 4x now compared to last year and then crashes 2x in the next two months

You have a great style with your videos, Philip. Keep it up, we appreciate your knowledge!
sheesh, some of the sell prices for old cards are wild - i could never drop that much money on cards so power to those that can
Make sure you get onto the discord people. It’s a great resource.
These are some great lessons. Appreciate the amount of content you put out.
Like any investment it's always worth doing your research and understanding the risk
It’s like the sneaker market before people stop caring about getting every drop eventually
i completely agree i'm staying away from seal products right now. focusing on illustration art right now. new to the hobby butenjoying none the less,
Been loving the vids man 🙏🏽
Its always amazing 🎉 how you see pokemon as a hobby and as an investment in their own respective definitions :) Your mental analysis is pretty logical and direct!!!! Keep it up
Best thing I did was learn market cycles for stocks and shares. You can literally apply bull and bear market cycle trends towards the Pokemon tcg market cycles. It's kind of like having a cheat sheet 😅
Just like in any other investment vehicle, buy when the price is low, sell when the price is high. A basic understanding of economics is all you need in this hobby.
Your channel and the advice within definitely made me a more frugal and conscientious pokémon investor. Out with the bull in with the new! 🐻
I caught myself saying that exact phrase that I am good at making calls on investments or adding to my collection at the right time before the price spikes. We need to remain vigilant so we don’t get burned when the hype dies down.
I sold all my cards past week with a 60% ROI (I bought mainly Charizard 234 at 100$)
Beautiful Yveltal card! ❤
Yeah I'm just collecting cards/products that check both boxes of 1) I love them and wouldn't mind sitting on them for 20+ years and 2) at the time of purchase I want that product to be at a price I feel I could sell reasonably quickly (so good liquidity)
Another thing to think of is vintage pokemon didn't have full arts so there is more demand for those cards. Vintage is more risk because of the art and high price point. I do think latias and moonbreon are overpriced right now. Modern will definitely have iconic cards that will always hold value
The man the myth the legend, singlet Phil is back
Same as many have mentioned here, I'm going to only focus on cards that I like. Anything else is a bonus (although whether or not i can bring myself to sell my loved cards is a whole other topic)
Your videos are very helpful and give good direction as I've started to get back into collecting. Thanks for the videos
Love your videos!❤
I keep buying the cards for the hobby and the arts, i try to keep away from the investment mentality as much as possible, though it is hard sometimes !
I fortunately wasn’t in the hobby during 2021, I really hope prices drop again.
I just got to collect Pokemon card and I love your channel because it I give me so much suggestion❤keep going on😁
Love the videos Phil, just joined the discord!
Welcome to the discord!
love your vids and live openings keep it up man, 50k soon
Keep up the good work and good content! Really enjoy it. You the man
My way of enjoying the hobby is to buy the cards that I find attractive due to their art, if the price increases it is an extra point but it is not the main thing.
Gonna be interesting to see how long this run lasts. Once it cools down I'll be back to buying mode
