The Best Day of Photography, Ever | Photography Tips from the Field

  • Photography 101 is: go to amazing places. And today, that's exactly where we were.
For my travel photography check out my IG at @brendanvanson.
What an amazing day of photography at Havasu and Mooney Falls. When I say that this was the best day of photography ever, I'm not exaggerating. It was legit the best day. And, I just felt so in my element with the landscape photography here.
Havasu Falls is such an incredible place, and even though I've shot it 3 or 4 times, I love how I can still come and get different pictures and shoot different styles of photography each time.
This place is a landscape photography dream location, and there are just countless angles and compositions to be had here. And, today's episode was basically a photography class. It was full of lessons, tips, and tutorials. In so many ways, this was photography 101, and also a bit of a master class.
So, I shot photography from dawn all the way into the night. I took pictures at dawn, sunrise, midday, sunset, and of the stars. It was the kind of day that will go down in history as the best day of photography. And, from a business standpoint, I also think it might have been the most productive day I've had in ages. I mean, if this photography doesn't sell, nothing will.
Aside from Havasu Falls, we also went and did some photography at Mooney Falls which is just down the way. The light wasn't great all day, but it still just really worked. And, I'm very, very happy with the way things went down today.

Fantastic images Brendan. Living here in AZ we see photos of Havasupi nonstop and it’s been done to death, but yours definitely stand out! That place is iconic and so popular for good reason! Great info on the star trails exposure calculations as well. I use photopills for iPhones that has an exposure feature that can do that for you as well. 👊🏼

19 minutes! Fantastic, soon we can expect a 30min daily episode, only kidding that's a mad amount of editing to get it that far, not even thinking about the amount of filming needed. Thanks for sharing the adventures!

Sometimes I use the "1 minute rule", (1 second at ISO 6400 equals one minute at ISO 100) ...and other times I just do the math on my fingers. Either way, I'm shooting my test exposures to check my histogram at ISO 6400 or 12800, because nobody wants to sit around for 60 sec. or more just to find out that your histogram was 2-3 stops under-exposed! So even if I'm never going to keeper a shot at ISO "HI" or whatever it is, I use that to test my histogram, at a more reasonable shutter speed, (1-8 seconds) ...then start doing the finger math.
Love that last shot! Man I miss that place. And yeah, it can be an absolute zoo in the summer, night photography galore!

Thank You so much for taking us with you. I am always working with my other jobs so I don't get out to much. I am trying to change that, with your wonderful videos and advice things are starting to change for me with photography, I still have a lot of work to do, like Vlogs and more travel photography, stock footage and photos, would be nice as well as motivation (you definetly help with motivation being positive and real, don't ever change that), just a slow pace for me but I will pick up the pace for 2018. I have followed your advice and love your photography. I am ready to really work at it for 2018. Thanks again and say Hello To Jodie. P.S. I am a little shy to Vlog because I have tried and I don't think I look good at all on camera, You guys are much better looking than I. I am going to eventually try. Sorry so long I will try to shorten these comments in the future I know your busy, just wanted you to know how much good you are spreading in the world with your youtube channel. Hi Brendan, great episode, as always !
As for the sunstars, it is related to diffraction and basically, diffraction creates 2 rays perpendicular to each blade. When you have an even number of blades, 2 opposite blades are parallel so you'll have 4 rays but you will only see 2 because they are perfectly aligned. With an odd number of blades, you won't have 2 parallel blades, therefore an odd number of blades creates sunstars with twice the number of points.
The star is also affected by the shape of the blades. Straight blades will create nicer stars than curved blades but the bokeh won't be as nice. Some lenses have curved aperture blades (for bokeh when wide open) and "staighter" blades when stopped down (for sunstars) to benefit from the best of both worlds.
    Bonne journée,

Hey, Brendan just came across your vlogging videos and man this is ridiculous simply AMAZING. You have just put Havasu and Mooney falls on my bucket list. I just recently was terminated from my job of 9.5 years as a police officer who developed PTSD from the mass terrorist shooting that happened on June 12th, 2016 The club Pulse shooting in Orlando Florida. I have been looking to find a way of coping with everything and well I need to say your video of this trip has made me want to get out of bed. You don't know me or maybe you heard about my story anyways just wanted to say thank you for this video I think this is going to be a platt form that I can maybe use to help me and others suffering from PTSD.

How is stacking different then keeping the shutter open? Its literally exactly the same thing. Stacking is actually far superior since you arent dealing with the sensor heating up and you actually have a lower effective ISO (stacking gets rid of noise). You also dont risk having a shot ruined by overexposure. Your comment about "not liking that look" is wrong since there is no difference in look at all (unless you do the "comet stacking" method).

+Iwona Targosz it's totally open. You just cant make reservations. You just rock up, pay the fee at the office in Supai, and camp.
