I’ve been living in Levittown, Long Island since 1971. After raising two boys to manhood and losing my wife, I still love it here.
Mine is one of the original cape cods built in 1947. Levitt made one error in his first blueprints running the chimney from the boiler room straight up through a load bearing beam. The fix was to have the chimney run up but slanting to avoid the beam. Works great anyway.

Levittown was built for returning veterans after WW2 NOT WW1

The homes were designed so that the roofs could be raised, providing 2 more rooms and a bath on second floors. L-Town is still beautiful today, Thanks to Leavitt and the whites.

levitwon, wow!i have never been to levitown, but i lived there, sort of. i was born in 1957 and grew up in normandy village in penna. our home, 2811 narcissus road, was started in 1955 and ready to move in christmas 1956. i was born in that house. anyway mr levitt made his fortunes making levitowns all over the us, making afforabable housing for returning ww2 veterans. levitown,ny was such a sucess that they made one outside of phila. mr levvitts son in law, norman denny, took levitts design further and built and named his homes normandy. i lived there as a boy from 1957-1968. it is always home to me. i returned there 1970,1971,1997,2008. part of me is still there, my heart is there. i grew up there in an era when byberry was still the state hosp and we heard that inmates had escaped. byberry was to the 1 miles from normandy. we used to play in the corn fields and potato fields of byberry, used to catch crayfish in byberry creek. normandy square market used to have the food basket grocery store. parkwood theaters was only a mile away, and highway pool was close by. it was an era when you knew all your neighbors and you were welcomed by all of them to come in and get a glass of milk or lemonade. an era when you could go out and leave your front door unlocked or even leave your windows opened. the neighbors were the spites, mcclintocks, juniors, ryans, millers, hartzells, devinneys, bates, fluegers, londeens, muirs, marxs,oh what wonderful neighbors we had!i shall always love those old homes!!robert whitaker

No use whining about it. We now have a President who hates everybody except his followers.

Not bad sized rooms but only being two bedrooms if you had two or three kids you would be cramped for room. maybe some people put up a partition in the bedroom. But I think it's a nice layout and wouldn't mind having one of my own if it was in good condition. I'm very family oriented and it warms my heart thinking of the family's that grew up there.
