How does the key unlock the buttons?

There is a small switch inside that gets pressed when you turn the key. Hope this helps!

Some talks on the internet still confuses me with these stuff, does it work without the main control panel? Or the control panel is a must for it to work?

A main panel is a must for an annunciator to work. The annunciator is just a quicker way of controlling system without using the main panel.
