It was masterful camerawork! I didn't know until recently that they used a periscope lens on a rail above the set which made it easier to move around. Especially after all the trouble I had getting the wooden railway toys and Horace in focus, I don't know how they did it!

Just want to say that I really appreciate the work you do for all us lifelong Thomas fans. Growing up with the VHS tapes, ERTL models, books, board games etc, it's been a real treat to not only watch old episodes on TH-cam but also the videos you made with swears, violence and soundtracks from other films have been great. Been a big fan of your NWR origin series, the horror stories and the engines of Sodor finale. Not to mention your recent Oliver to the rescue.

During these seasons of Thomas, everybody involved truly cared. The modelling crew cared to really make sets both gorgeously stunning on a broad scale and minutely detailed when zoomed in; the music composers cared to make soundtracks, characters' themes, heck even transitional ditties as memorable as they possibly could; and the writers cared to give us the best dialogue and best stories, with language that struck the perfect balance between sophistication and innocence. This is why we us a fandom still love these seasons to this day-- we care for this show with our hearts because the show runners cared. And by the way, you really needn't worry that you've explained your reasons for loving certain characters or episodes many times before. We are all here to share our appreciation for the wonderful world of Sodor, we can't hear enough of it even if we tried!
Exactly. It was only after HIT took over that things really started to fall apart. Similar to how other franchises are becoming "babyfied." Take SpongeBob for instance, one of my childhood favorites.
This is my personal tier list: 1. Season 5 - A batch of great episodes, from Cranky Bugs to Bye George!, to Rusty and the Boulder. Talking about the new characters I would've wanted them to return. Cranky is fun and I'm glad he's still around. It would be cool if Bill and Ben interacted with Derek again in CGI. 2. Season 3 - An underrated season in my opinion. Among my favorites, there's Thomas, Percy and the Post Train, not only because of the story but the model work also. Henry's Forest is also another standout for visuals in addition to the story. Regarding the new character lineup, Mavis is probably my favorite. Nice to know she grew and matured after this season. 3. Season 4 - I'll admit most of the narrow gauge centered episodes aren't amazing to me, but the Duke saga is so awesome. Of those four stories, I'd say my favorite is You Can't Win. I also think Bowled Out is great. The newbie I appreciate the most is Duncan. He is written consistently in all his appearances for this season, and every other season he was in. 4. Season 2 - Among the episodes, I really like The Runaway, and Percy and Harold is iconic. Thomas and Trevor is a story I remember watching fondly as a kid, and its still great. The favorite new character for me is Diesel. He truly is devious! 5. Season 7 - Nice way to close out the Classic era of the show. Emily's New Coaches is my favorite from the season. Additionally, Emily is one of my favorite newbies who was introduced this season. I also think Murdoch's cool, and relatable. 6. Season 6 - Alec Baldwin is fine as the narrator in my opinion. There are episodes I would definitely consider weak like as Gordon Takes a Tumble, but there bangers such as Twin Trouble. From the newbies, Salty is fun, and Jack and the Pack are fun as well. 7. Season 1 - The season that started it all. James and the Express is my go-to episode from this season. Other ones like Tenders and Turntables, Edward and Gordon, Come Out Henry!, and the Toby and the Stout Gentleman are great. In the original character lineup, I really like Percy. He isn't always written correctly, but he's a still a lot of fun.
It just sucks that almost all the videos from the classic era are constantly being taken down. Though it will likely fall on either blind eyes or deaf ears, I sent an email to the European part of Mattel as a formal request to reconsider the copyright issues surrounding that era and possibly later seasons. Also, why did we US citizens get screwed over when it came to the music in Season 7. When I have a family of my own, I will find a way to show my kids this era. But hey, nice video. I also had two Thomas VHSs and one of them just so happened to be Thomas and the Jet Engine. The other was Thomas and his Friends get Along. I’m also glad you brought up Michael Brandon for once. Or maybe you always did bring him up every now and then and I just missed it. Anyway, I never thought about how weird he made characters sound (except James and Percy maybe) until years later when I was watching other reviews or analysis videos. It’s no wonder I preferred George Carlin and Alec Baldwin as the narrators when I was a kid.
I've always liked to imagine Season 7's use of camera shots from older seasons at the beginning of certain episodes was meant to be a "slide show" of sorts harkening back on what came years prior and the impact this show had for many people. As a result of that, I've come to appreciate Season 7 a lot more and it is a solid sendoff to the Classic Era of TTTE. Plus, I also just find the behind-the-scenes of Season 7's production to be quite fascinating. Season 5 is also my favorite season as well.
I've said before and I'll say it again, but Season 5 is one of few seasons of the show that has phenomenal narration in BOTH English speaking dubs. Alec Baldwin and Michael Angelis both knock it out of the ball park here!

Even though I grew up during the HiT Era, I still had two Season 5 DVDs of Make Someone Happy and Spills & Chills. They were part of my favorite Thomas Home Videos I own.
It's always great to see another commentary video from you. Hearing the voice of one of the first Thomas content creators I subscribed to, coupled with music and footage from the classic series we all know and love, makes for such a fun and nostalgic viewing experience :)
In TATMR, they recasted with smaller eye sockets some of the main engines’ faces because in the previous seasons, gaps can be seen between the faceplates and their eyeballs.

As someone who grew up with Thomas my favorite seasons are definitely either season 2 or season 4 just because of overall good to great and even memorable episodes with these 2 particular seasons. They just had such great episodes and its these memories i will cherish forever.
Season 5 is tied with season 3 for best season. Everything was so perfect. Not only did we get completely original stories, but most of them were executed so perfectly. The set designs, color levels, narration, soundtrack, character development, and variety of tone was what sealed the deal.
@ArmorPro57 I do agree that season 3 was beautiful with the scenery, and just the stories itself were just grand to me. Season 5 was great as well, for the same reasons it's just a breath of fresh air.
Season 5 is one of my favorite seasons as I have a lot of nostalgia for it. The 1st Thomas VHS tape I ever watched as a kid was Cranky Bugs & Other Stories, containing all Season 5 episodes.
1:50 Actually they’re were given matt finish paint and I think the reason why is because the previous five seasons had glossy paint that reflected too much of the film crew In which I had a tangent about paint with a matt finish being “realistic” is not realistic as it looks more toy-like than paint with a glossy finish
"Trust Thomas" is two stories mashed together. It has elements of the annual "Bertie's Bumpy Roads" and the story "Trucks" mixed together. A lot of the original stories from Season 3 take elements from one or two annuals to make something new.
Hey, there! I'm a big adult Thomas fan as well. Been caught up with Thomas especially since last year and I've watched several of your ranking videos and I also follow The Unlucky Tug another American Thomas youtuber who's probably the best at doing all things Thomas and UsualBlokeLuke a British Thomas youtuber who is pretty much the English equivalent of The Unlucky Tug. I saw your video last month and I was just thinking about it today and I realise I agree with every single one of your picks and rankings! At first I thought I only disagreed on wanting to rank Season 1 over 2 which I originally considered my third favourite Thomas season behind 4 and 5 but only because of my nostalgia bias having grown up with several episodes on VHS and the initial stories they were based on as well but really over time having revisited Season 2 fully on TH-cam by seeing all of its episodes and the rest as well, Season 2 has really won me over Season 1 which I only saw very few episodes as a kid so I didn't have much exposure to it but it really just improved on everything Season 1 did. The only thing I regard highly of the first season in terms of characters are the arcs of Thomas, Gordon and Henry plus the introduction of Toby which was done well that get sidelined in Season 2 in favour of other characters that shine through that are so many to count. But the aesthetic which is much more gritty, realistic and industrial, the storylines, the crashes, the music, the suspense, the camera work, everything is just done way better objectively in Season 2 and I wasn't really exposed much to Season 4 either as a child as the ones I most watched on VHS were mostly Seasons 1 and 5 with a bit of Season 3 as well but I was exposed to much of Season 4's new character merchandise and magazines especially from the Skarloey Railway and Stepney plus the new characters we see in the latter half so when seeing that season on TH-cam for the first time years ago I really felt like it was at the top in everything only beaten by Season 5 but when it comes to a single, consistent visual aesthetic for every episode and Railway adaptations, Season 4 would be number one followed by Season 2 followed by Season 1 which are equally as good when they come to adaptation but it's just Season 2 is a different stride compared to 1. However, I'd actually argue Season 2 has more the 80s aesthetic than Season 1 had because of its darker and more mature (dare I say sometimes sinister) tone whereas Season 1 I'd say is almost on par with Season 3 when it comes to its bright colours especially and more child-friendly content before Season 6 came along although Season 3 is definitely an improvement and burst through in the 90s as the best-looking season the series had so far that started the "golden" age of Thomas but when it comes to storytelling I may be more purist but the first two seasons I think were much better done and had more that sense of escapism. That said, I really am more of a fan of half of the new stories they did for Season 3 which would make my Top 10 compared to the Railway Series adaptations which for the most part I find just OK what with their changes except Escape, Tender Engines and Bulgy I think are the standout episodes for me personally. Henry's Forest would be my favourite of all the Thomas series though. Yet the other half of the new stories I find my least favourites of all the first five seasons which are the ones I most follow which would fall in line with most of the episodes I'd see from Season 6 and 7 which while they have some charm, I think they were a major step back from the previous series in many ways but I think 7 was an improvement on 6 like you said starting with its visuals though I don't really like Michael Brandon as a narrator at all and I didn't grow up in the US but with the British versions in England (I happen to have parents from both countries) so I never heard the actual American narrators as a kid with the only one being Ringo Starr (technically British) on the VHS "Thomas Gets Tricked" which I also happened to have and already marked my bias for Season 1. Season 5 however, will always be the best Thomas has ever gotten with story content and characters even though some may miss some that got more focus in the previous series but it really was just the closest cinematic masterpiece we ever got that wasn't a full-length movie.
I love seasons 1-5 because they encaptivate so much on what I love about Thomas. The set designs, character interactions, color levels, realistic atmosphere, soundtrack, etc. It felt so surreal seeing talking trains on a model set.

In my opinion, Seasons 4 & 5 were my favorites due to a lot of the same points you brought up: character development, memorable music, emotional moments, some thrilling/scary plot developments, tranquil and aesthetic set design/backgrounds & frequent action, to name some. Thanks for this great overview of the classic seasons & I can’t even describe how much Thomas & Friends and the Railway Series defined my childhood!!
The models themselves without context are alright. It was more the jarring comparison when they would use them, especially Rusty, in the same episodes. They look alright when they're on their own, particularly in the Hit era.

Ok, this is my last comment on this video but I just want to say that my all time favorite season 5 episode was Cranky Bugs. GOOD GOD, THE STORM SCENE WAS PHENOMENAL. THE MUSIC, LIGHTING, LIGHTNING EFFECTS WERE GOLD. and of course cranky screaming was hilarious 😂😂😂. I actually grew up with this episode as a kid. The first time I saw it was in my kindergarten class when my teacher showed us the episode. When I watched the episode the second time, i was very damn impressed 👏 👌. Wow my longest comment ever 😮. NOW I know way you asked for memeworthy quoted from season 1-7 on twitter and ngl your list is coincidentally very similar to mine but swap 1 and 3 as well as 2 and 4. Anyways some additional input. 6: none tbh 7: I like how very balanced this season was with lead roles literally every NWR 11 (besides duck oof) got focus. Also I love how the new characters besides Murdoch experiments with other characters. Fergus is forced to interact with the most troublesome (but in different ways engines), Emily deals with jealous as well as cheeky thomas and not to mention the sympathetic but at the same time grumpy henry, Arthur deals with lowkey jealous thomas but as well as the sympathetic mature thomas, and finally Spencer represents as you put it "the squilliam to Gordon's Squidward". 3: me and many others brought up how this season was not only balanced with character spotlight but also showing new sides to characters some of which becoming status quos aka james love for red paint as well as percy being the mail engine. Also it really expanded dyanamics started in the railway series such as thomas and james, Thomas and Bertie, as well as a few percy dynamics namely James, Harold and Duck 1: none tbh 2: This season did a really good job managing a bunch of random railway series books and meshing them all together making it all flow nicely therefore making it the (hot take incoming) the ONLY official season where not only Edward gets a good amount of spotlight but be in character at the same time 4: none tbh 5: tbh I thought you would mention Baldwin's narration for your favorite character Henry is so goddamn entertaining in this series not just with his two lead roles but small moments like in trouble with trees, horrid lorries and rumors with how over the top he is "your're the only danger on the rails..." "as a matter of fact..." "GGGGGGG-GHOSTS Edward was right" "REALLY" etc.
I don't know why, but whenever you talk about the model series like in this video or your appeal video, you make so much sense that I agree with you. Personally, I love all seven seasons, and Magic Railroad, since it was aired during the classic era, and because I love the Thomas x Lady ship, I love them all equally. So much so, I really don't consider future seasons canon in my personal timeline. Though characters from future seasons like Hank or Charlie are in it. They're arrivals happened differently in my timeline, as did events such as the rediscovery of Great Waterton. I also consider The Adventure Begins and Thomas and the Royal Engine canon, but they're slightly different in my timeline. Believe me, when I start my own Thomas fan series someday, you'll see what I mean.
This is an outstanding video. I don't really have favorite seasons or episodes because I enjoy all of them but the classic seasons I love watching are seasons 1-5. I like watching season 6 too. I rarely watch season 7 episodes but that's not to say that is isn't good. I praise all of the classic seasons for making incredible stories, music themes and beautiful scenery all by models to make a world of talking locomotives.
The smelter’s yard episode from season six genuinely scared me as a child back then. The music and lighting plus the practical effects made for an almost nightmare inducing atmosphere that made it feel like everything was out to hurt me and it also felt somewhat claustrophobic like everything was slowly surrounding and closing in on Thomas in said episode. This was honestly terrifying for 4 year old me at the time and for that reason I hated that episode and avoided it for several years. This was on the same vhs that had the jet engine episode btw. These days while it doesn’t scare me now I look back on it very fondly it as a solid episode that still lives rent free in my head from the effects and visuals alone.
Really good ranking, your opinions are completely justified and put into a great lens considering your spot in the fandom, though perhaps my own views can be drawn from bias and how I view these seven seasons of stories. I definitely agree with Season 5 being the best, I love it way too much for its epic action and brilliant cinematic scope. That boulder will forever haunt me. My ranking: #7. Season 6 #6. And you know what would make it even funnier, if it had Neil Crone’s Russian accent that he originally gave Diesel 10 which he actually brought up in an interview and his Russian voice was so funny and it would be perfect for the toothache diesel
One note on Rusty to the Rescue in particular in the classic series the other railway is always stated to be in a far away part of Sodor where only the diesels go, not on the mainland. It's still a bit much for Rusty to make it there on narrow gauge tracks but it is at least still on the island here
@joshuaW5621 that is true. But also so did season 3 a smidge. But those episodes are so few that each one could be negligible. Unless it's Henry's forrest, the reverend definitely didn't like that one
The reason why they switch the pain is that Gullane owned the rights of Thomas & Friends and therefore they wanted to ruin it because they thought that I knew the design for the trains will be much better even though the ones from season 5 were okay it could have been kept considering their paint was much more shinier.
I actually think that Heroes, unlike Trust Thomas, intertwined the two story ideas it mashed into one pretty well Think about it: Bill and Ben make a big mess of the yards, but they then get to redeem themselves in a way that more than makes up for their previous screwup
I have a theory about the rest of the Jack and the Pack episodes, due to the eyes on Thomas, the lighting, the frames per second, and the duration, I have a feeling the episodes were originally made in 2003/04 but didn’t come out yet.
And I always thought George Carlin and Ringo Starr were the standard narrators for the whole show until I learned there were narrators in different dubs.
I 100% agree with this list. Series 5 is definitely the G.O.A.T. we didn't get the same kind of gold the franchise gave this season until Sodor's Legend Of The Lost Treasure.
Everything about that season was perfect. The music, the set designs, the character interactions, the variety of tone, etc. Although I love season 3, it's not hard why I adore season 5 for its stories, especially since they were all originals

@@armorpro573 well some of the new characters were not as fleshed out as they probably should have been and there are a few stories that I feel had some plot holes. Plus Awdry would have been annoyed with the show becoming more unrealistic for the sake of spectacle over substance. Don’t get me wrong, I love season 5 as well, but I personally think calling it perfect is a bit of a stretch given that it does have its faults too.
I'm so glad to see a lot of creators and fans giving love to Season 5. Not that it was ever regarded poorly, but with it being solely original stories, it's one of the most imaginative and creative seasons. I love that a good amount of time is spent away from the railway and, like Season 2, we get introduced to some memorable characters like Cranky or Arry and Bert. I go back and forth on whether Season 2 or 5 is my favorite. While A Close Shave is my overall favorite episode, Season 5 has this sense of energy and creativity that I don't feel any season before or since was able to match.
Yeah, this is where Thomas was at its peak. If this were nowadays, the season would've been filled with wacky humor, bright colors, and downright degrading storylines. This is why classic Thomas is so much better: it treated its stories with realism and maturity. Like Thomas1Edward2Henry3 stated, some of the more unusual episodes like "Rusty and the Boulder" may sound bad at first, but they were executed perfectly. Also, anyone who says Thomas is a baby show clearly has never seen season 5
I will always love S1-5. And I'll still be neutral to S6-7. BTW, S1 is not the worst season, but it is a classic start to see Thomas the tank engine and his friends come to life.

@@rockstar-gc2006 Season 5 is the peak of Thomas and Friends and nothing else beats it. While there are some episodes that don't really stand out, most of season 5 is spectacular. The set designs, character developments, color tone, soundtrack, varieties in tone, and world building are all there. You can watch one episode and immediately be captivated by its wonders. In fact, this is the one season that probably has the most action and spooky vibes. A lot of non-fans say Thomas is nothing but a baby show, but then again, what show would have an engine falling to their death or almost getting scrapped? Alright I've talked a bit too much, but you get the idea
S1 is my favorite. I love the storybook aspect and music from it. I really like the stories, especially The Flying Kipper, Thomas and The Trucks, The Breakdown Train...I love the realistic yet simplistic sets and such. Second place is S4. The mountainy, watery, beautiful sets. It looks like a storybook world, something i really like. The stories about the narrow gauge railroad. I love it.Next is S2. I love the industrial setting, the detail in the sets, the crashes and character arcs, the runaways, the scary stuff too. And it wouldnt be a S2 analysis without mentioning Percy. He is the main character in the season, his arc was learning more about the island, and he had a little thing with everyone, made him my favorite character. Next up is probably S5, i like the way everything looks. Some stories are kind of weak, and some stories are insane, really action packed, it's fine i guess, its really good, dont murder me, but i just think it wasnt too interesting. It was cool and all, and very scary, like a big amount, i used to be terrified of the scary ones. Next is season 3, it was just not full of action, or had good narratives and continuity. If i had to state one, probably Percy and the fruity day, trust thomas etc.. about 6 and 7 i havent even watched it yet... If you disagree, make sure to tell me.

My ranking: 7. 6 6. 7 5. 2 4. 1 3. 4 2. 3 1. 5 Season 7 is pretty much just a visually superior season 6 to me-‘nuff said. I put Season 2 below Season 1 because of how constrained the second season felt. A lot of planned episodes were cut (including that famous example that was cut amidst filming) and Britt and David couldn’t film non-Awdry stories at the time. The experimentation with tone and filming technique really helps the season stand out but I can tell that was it for the studio at the time. I think it was a wise decision to hold off a third season to focus on other projects like Tugs and STS because Season 3 just went big and took it home. Season 5 is a rollercoaster of emotions, tone, plot patterns, and visual atmosphere. I find that it has the best combination of spooky episodes (Haunted Henry, Duncan Gets Spooked), disastrous episodes (Put Upon Percy, Toby and the Flood), and funny episodes (Lady Hatt’s Birthday Party, Baa). Season 3 is quite similar, but Season 5 just goes above and beyond.
I have to agree that season 5 is the best season. The episodes are great to watch and both Baldwin and Angelis narrations are both great to listen to and the shininess of the models. Yup, this is the beast season of the classic series.
Great commentary video, the classic series of Thomas feels better probably than any era due to its mature tone and real-life relevance, in comparison to the later seasons which downgraded its mature tone for children (though to some extents watchable). I also have two questions: 1) What college are you in, and what are you trying to study 2) Do you know any of the sister shows to Thomas the Tank Engine
To answer your questions, he's currently attending Chicago University. As for what he's majoring, I have no idea. And yes, he does know of Tugs as well as the other reboots.

I’m British, so have always had Ringo Starr. Your proviso for Series 1 should also apply to Ringo - it seems like he’s not being too brave yet, and for Series 2 went further, and went even further on STS - his redubbed lines for Series 1 in the US make for a huge contrast. I don’t think that holding back in S1 is Ringo’s fault. Also, I’ve heard Carlin’s narrations but I prefer Ringo’s every day.

Let me say I don’t remember most of these seasons or episodes. If you’ve seen Paul’s Vids, Tidmouth Thunderbolt, Percy and the Beast Productions, etc., you’d know why I didn’t watch Thomas since (the actual show) I watch Thomas YTPs and fan made movies like your Revenge of The Ghost Train and The Engines of Sodor finale (all parts) but I think when Boggiston (sorry if I spelt his name wrong) gives Diesel 10 a talking to, (at 1:11:52) that Diesel 10 would split him in 2 (of course not showing that)

Just want to say that I really appreciate the work you do for all us lifelong Thomas fans. Growing up with the VHS tapes, ERTL models, books, board games etc, it's been a real treat to not only watch old episodes on TH-cam but also the videos you made with swears, violence and soundtracks from other films have been great.
Been a big fan of your NWR origin series, the horror stories and the engines of Sodor finale. Not to mention your recent Oliver to the rescue.

During these seasons of Thomas, everybody involved truly cared. The modelling crew cared to really make sets both gorgeously stunning on a broad scale and minutely detailed when zoomed in; the music composers cared to make soundtracks, characters' themes, heck even transitional ditties as memorable as they possibly could; and the writers cared to give us the best dialogue and best stories, with language that struck the perfect balance between sophistication and innocence. This is why we us a fandom still love these seasons to this day-- we care for this show with our hearts because the show runners cared.
And by the way, you really needn't worry that you've explained your reasons for loving certain characters or episodes many times before. We are all here to share our appreciation for the wonderful world of Sodor, we can't hear enough of it even if we tried!
Exactly. It was only after HIT took over that things really started to fall apart. Similar to how other franchises are becoming "babyfied." Take SpongeBob for instance, one of my childhood favorites.
Thomas, Percy, and the Dragon VHS was the first ever Thomas VHS tape I had when I was a kid, and was one of my personal favorites.
This is my personal tier list:
1. Season 5 - A batch of great episodes, from Cranky Bugs to Bye George!, to Rusty and the Boulder. Talking about the new characters I would've wanted them to return. Cranky is fun and I'm glad he's still around. It would be cool if Bill and Ben interacted with Derek again in CGI.
2. Season 3 - An underrated season in my opinion. Among my favorites, there's Thomas, Percy and the Post Train, not only because of the story but the model work also. Henry's Forest is also another standout for visuals in addition to the story. Regarding the new character lineup, Mavis is probably my favorite. Nice to know she grew and matured after this season.
3. Season 4 - I'll admit most of the narrow gauge centered episodes aren't amazing to me, but the Duke saga is so awesome. Of those four stories, I'd say my favorite is You Can't Win. I also think Bowled Out is great. The newbie I appreciate the most is Duncan. He is written consistently in all his appearances for this season, and every other season he was in.
4. Season 2 - Among the episodes, I really like The Runaway, and Percy and Harold is iconic. Thomas and Trevor is a story I remember watching fondly as a kid, and its still great. The favorite new character for me is Diesel. He truly is devious!
5. Season 7 - Nice way to close out the Classic era of the show. Emily's New Coaches is my favorite from the season. Additionally, Emily is one of my favorite newbies who was introduced this season. I also think Murdoch's cool, and relatable.
6. Season 6 - Alec Baldwin is fine as the narrator in my opinion. There are episodes I would definitely consider weak like as Gordon Takes a Tumble, but there bangers such as Twin Trouble. From the newbies, Salty is fun, and Jack and the Pack are fun as well.
7. Season 1 - The season that started it all. James and the Express is my go-to episode from this season. Other ones like Tenders and Turntables, Edward and Gordon, Come Out Henry!, and the Toby and the Stout Gentleman are great. In the original character lineup, I really like Percy. He isn't always written correctly, but he's a still a lot of fun.
It just sucks that almost all the videos from the classic era are constantly being taken down. Though it will likely fall on either blind eyes or deaf ears, I sent an email to the European part of Mattel as a formal request to reconsider the copyright issues surrounding that era and possibly later seasons. Also, why did we US citizens get screwed over when it came to the music in Season 7. When I have a family of my own, I will find a way to show my kids this era. But hey, nice video. I also had two Thomas VHSs and one of them just so happened to be Thomas and the Jet Engine. The other was Thomas and his Friends get Along. I’m also glad you brought up Michael Brandon for once. Or maybe you always did bring him up every now and then and I just missed it. Anyway, I never thought about how weird he made characters sound (except James and Percy maybe) until years later when I was watching other reviews or analysis videos. It’s no wonder I preferred George Carlin and Alec Baldwin as the narrators when I was a kid.

I've always liked to imagine Season 7's use of camera shots from older seasons at the beginning of certain episodes was meant to be a "slide show" of sorts harkening back on what came years prior and the impact this show had for many people. As a result of that, I've come to appreciate Season 7 a lot more and it is a solid sendoff to the Classic Era of TTTE. Plus, I also just find the behind-the-scenes of Season 7's production to be quite fascinating. Season 5 is also my favorite season as well.

I've said before and I'll say it again, but Season 5 is one of few seasons of the show that has phenomenal narration in BOTH English speaking dubs. Alec Baldwin and Michael Angelis both knock it out of the ball park here!

It's always great to see another commentary video from you. Hearing the voice of one of the first Thomas content creators I subscribed to, coupled with music and footage from the classic series we all know and love, makes for such a fun and nostalgic viewing experience :)
In TATMR, they recasted with smaller eye sockets some of the main engines’ faces because in the previous seasons, gaps can be seen between the faceplates and their eyeballs.

As someone who grew up with Thomas my favorite seasons are definitely either season 2 or season 4 just because of overall good to great and even memorable episodes with these 2 particular seasons. They just had such great episodes and its these memories i will cherish forever.
Season 5 is tied with season 3 for best season. Everything was so perfect. Not only did we get completely original stories, but most of them were executed so perfectly. The set designs, color levels, narration, soundtrack, character development, and variety of tone was what sealed the deal.

"Trust Thomas" is two stories mashed together. It has elements of the annual "Bertie's Bumpy Roads" and the story "Trucks" mixed together. A lot of the original stories from Season 3 take elements from one or two annuals to make something new.

Hey, there! I'm a big adult Thomas fan as well. Been caught up with Thomas especially since last year and I've watched several of your ranking videos and I also follow The Unlucky Tug another American Thomas youtuber who's probably the best at doing all things Thomas and UsualBlokeLuke a British Thomas youtuber who is pretty much the English equivalent of The Unlucky Tug. I saw your video last month and I was just thinking about it today and I realise I agree with every single one of your picks and rankings! At first I thought I only disagreed on wanting to rank Season 1 over 2 which I originally considered my third favourite Thomas season behind 4 and 5 but only because of my nostalgia bias having grown up with several episodes on VHS and the initial stories they were based on as well but really over time having revisited Season 2 fully on TH-cam by seeing all of its episodes and the rest as well, Season 2 has really won me over Season 1 which I only saw very few episodes as a kid so I didn't have much exposure to it but it really just improved on everything Season 1 did. The only thing I regard highly of the first season in terms of characters are the arcs of Thomas, Gordon and Henry plus the introduction of Toby which was done well that get sidelined in Season 2 in favour of other characters that shine through that are so many to count. But the aesthetic which is much more gritty, realistic and industrial, the storylines, the crashes, the music, the suspense, the camera work, everything is just done way better objectively in Season 2 and I wasn't really exposed much to Season 4 either as a child as the ones I most watched on VHS were mostly Seasons 1 and 5 with a bit of Season 3 as well but I was exposed to much of Season 4's new character merchandise and magazines especially from the Skarloey Railway and Stepney plus the new characters we see in the latter half so when seeing that season on TH-cam for the first time years ago I really felt like it was at the top in everything only beaten by Season 5 but when it comes to a single, consistent visual aesthetic for every episode and Railway adaptations, Season 4 would be number one followed by Season 2 followed by Season 1 which are equally as good when they come to adaptation but it's just Season 2 is a different stride compared to 1. However, I'd actually argue Season 2 has more the 80s aesthetic than Season 1 had because of its darker and more mature (dare I say sometimes sinister) tone whereas Season 1 I'd say is almost on par with Season 3 when it comes to its bright colours especially and more child-friendly content before Season 6 came along although Season 3 is definitely an improvement and burst through in the 90s as the best-looking season the series had so far that started the "golden" age of Thomas but when it comes to storytelling I may be more purist but the first two seasons I think were much better done and had more that sense of escapism. That said, I really am more of a fan of half of the new stories they did for Season 3 which would make my Top 10 compared to the Railway Series adaptations which for the most part I find just OK what with their changes except Escape, Tender Engines and Bulgy I think are the standout episodes for me personally. Henry's Forest would be my favourite of all the Thomas series though. Yet the other half of the new stories I find my least favourites of all the first five seasons which are the ones I most follow which would fall in line with most of the episodes I'd see from Season 6 and 7 which while they have some charm, I think they were a major step back from the previous series in many ways but I think 7 was an improvement on 6 like you said starting with its visuals though I don't really like Michael Brandon as a narrator at all and I didn't grow up in the US but with the British versions in England (I happen to have parents from both countries) so I never heard the actual American narrators as a kid with the only one being Ringo Starr (technically British) on the VHS "Thomas Gets Tricked" which I also happened to have and already marked my bias for Season 1. Season 5 however, will always be the best Thomas has ever gotten with story content and characters even though some may miss some that got more focus in the previous series but it really was just the closest cinematic masterpiece we ever got that wasn't a full-length movie.
I love seasons 1-5 because they encaptivate so much on what I love about Thomas. The set designs, character interactions, color levels, realistic atmosphere, soundtrack, etc. It felt so surreal seeing talking trains on a model set.

In my opinion, Seasons 4 & 5 were my favorites due to a lot of the same points you brought up: character development, memorable music, emotional moments, some thrilling/scary plot developments, tranquil and aesthetic set design/backgrounds & frequent action, to name some. Thanks for this great overview of the classic seasons & I can’t even describe how much Thomas & Friends and the Railway Series defined my childhood!!

The models themselves without context are alright. It was more the jarring comparison when they would use them, especially Rusty, in the same episodes. They look alright when they're on their own, particularly in the Hit era.

Ok, this is my last comment on this video but I just want to say that my all time favorite season 5 episode was Cranky Bugs. GOOD GOD, THE STORM SCENE WAS PHENOMENAL. THE MUSIC, LIGHTING, LIGHTNING EFFECTS WERE GOLD. and of course cranky screaming was hilarious 😂😂😂. I actually grew up with this episode as a kid. The first time I saw it was in my kindergarten class when my teacher showed us the episode. When I watched the episode the second time, i was very damn impressed 👏 👌. Wow my longest comment ever 😮. 7: I like how very balanced this season was with lead roles literally every NWR 11 (besides duck oof) got focus. Also I love how the new characters besides Murdoch experiments with other characters. Fergus is forced to interact with the most troublesome (but in different ways engines), Emily deals with jealous as well as cheeky thomas and not to mention the sympathetic but at the same time grumpy henry, Arthur deals with lowkey jealous thomas but as well as the sympathetic mature thomas, and finally Spencer represents as you put it "the squilliam to Gordon's Squidward".
3: me and many others brought up how this season was not only balanced with character spotlight but also showing new sides to characters some of which becoming status quos aka james love for red paint as well as percy being the mail engine. Also it really expanded dyanamics started in the railway series such as thomas and james, Thomas and Bertie, as well as a few percy dynamics namely James, Harold and Duck

I don't know why, but whenever you talk about the model series like in this video or your appeal video, you make so much sense that I agree with you. Personally, I love all seven seasons, and Magic Railroad, since it was aired during the classic era, and because I love the Thomas x Lady ship, I love them all equally. So much so, I really don't consider future seasons canon in my personal timeline. Though characters from future seasons like Hank or Charlie are in it. They're arrivals happened differently in my timeline, as did events such as the rediscovery of Great Waterton. I also consider The Adventure Begins and Thomas and the Royal Engine canon, but they're slightly different in my timeline. Believe me, when I start my own Thomas fan series someday, you'll see what I mean.

This is an outstanding video. I don't really have favorite seasons or episodes because I enjoy all of them but the classic seasons I love watching are seasons 1-5. I like watching season 6 too. I rarely watch season 7 episodes but that's not to say that is isn't good. I praise all of the classic seasons for making incredible stories, music themes and beautiful scenery all by models to make a world of talking locomotives.

The smelter’s yard episode from season six genuinely scared me as a child back then.
The music and lighting plus the practical effects made for an almost nightmare inducing atmosphere that made it feel like everything was out to hurt me and it also felt somewhat claustrophobic like everything was slowly surrounding and closing in on Thomas in said episode. This was honestly terrifying for 4 year old me at the time and for that reason I hated that episode and avoided it for several years.
This was on the same vhs that had the jet engine episode btw.
These days while it doesn’t scare me now I look back on it very fondly it as a solid episode that still lives rent free in my head from the effects and visuals alone.
I think it's really hard and slightly unfair to rank the first 5 seasons - they're all just perfect

6 and 7 are kinda mid. 1-5 are my definitive seasons, and Angelis' narration makes them even better.
Really good ranking, your opinions are completely justified and put into a great lens considering your spot in the fandom, though perhaps my own views can be drawn from bias and how I view these seven seasons of stories. I definitely agree with Season 5 being the best, I love it way too much for its epic action and brilliant cinematic scope. That boulder will forever haunt me.

One note on Rusty to the Rescue in particular in the classic series the other railway is always stated to be in a far away part of Sodor where only the diesels go, not on the mainland. It's still a bit much for Rusty to make it there on narrow gauge tracks but it is at least still on the island here

The reason why they switch the pain is that Gullane owned the rights of Thomas & Friends and therefore they wanted to ruin it because they thought that I knew the design for the trains will be much better even though the ones from season 5 were okay it could have been kept considering their paint was much more shinier.
I actually think that Heroes, unlike Trust Thomas, intertwined the two story ideas it mashed into one pretty well
Think about it: Bill and Ben make a big mess of the yards, but they then get to redeem themselves in a way that more than makes up for their previous screwup

I have a theory about the rest of the Jack and the Pack episodes, due to the eyes on Thomas, the lighting, the frames per second, and the duration, I have a feeling the episodes were originally made in 2003/04 but didn’t come out yet.

I 100% agree with this list. Series 5 is definitely the G.O.A.T. we didn't get the same kind of gold the franchise gave this season until Sodor's Legend Of The Lost Treasure.
Everything about that season was perfect. The music, the set designs, the character interactions, the variety of tone, etc. Although I love season 3, it's not hard why I adore season 5 for its stories, especially since they were all originals

Plus Awdry would have been annoyed with the show becoming more unrealistic for the sake of spectacle over substance. Don’t get me wrong, I love season 5 as well, but I personally think calling it perfect is a bit of a stretch given that it does have its faults too.

I'm so glad to see a lot of creators and fans giving love to Season 5. Not that it was ever regarded poorly, but with it being solely original stories, it's one of the most imaginative and creative seasons. I love that a good amount of time is spent away from the railway and, like Season 2, we get introduced to some memorable characters like Cranky or Arry and Bert. I go back and forth on whether Season 2 or 5 is my favorite. While A Close Shave is my overall favorite episode, Season 5 has this sense of energy and creativity that I don't feel any season before or since was able to match.
Yeah, this is where Thomas was at its peak. If this were nowadays, the season would've been filled with wacky humor, bright colors, and downright degrading storylines. This is why classic Thomas is so much better: it treated its stories with realism and maturity. Like Thomas1Edward2Henry3 stated, some of the more unusual episodes like "Rusty and the Boulder" may sound bad at first, but they were executed perfectly.
Also, anyone who says Thomas is a baby show clearly has never seen season 5

I will always love S1-5. And I'll still be neutral to S6-7. BTW, S1 is not the worst season, but it is a classic start to see Thomas the tank engine and his friends come to life.
I disagree with that opinion, I consider S6-7 to be part of Classic Era Thomas because they still have that soul that the predecessors have.

Awesome Job! my favorite season is Season 5 and also seasons 3 and 4 are also favorites for me. I do love Alec Baldwin as the narrator for Season 5 and he gives the show energy. I do have a question can you do the ranking of seasons from the Hit Era?

Really good video T1E2H3. My favourite season of the classic series is a tie between season 4 and 5. I just love both of these seasons. I can't choose one.

@@rockstar-gc2006 Season 5 is the peak of Thomas and Friends and nothing else beats it. While there are some episodes that don't really stand out, most of season 5 is spectacular. The set designs, character developments, color tone, soundtrack, varieties in tone, and world building are all there. You can watch one episode and immediately be captivated by its wonders.
In fact, this is the one season that probably has the most action and spooky vibes. A lot of non-fans say Thomas is nothing but a baby show, but then again, what show would have an engine falling to their death or almost getting scrapped?

I had a yellow bumper party vhs when I was little and it had series 3 and series 4 episodes I remember them all it was my favourite vhs ever
S1 is my favorite. I love the storybook aspect and music from it. I really like the stories, especially The Flying Kipper, Thomas and The Trucks, The Breakdown Train...I love the realistic yet simplistic sets and such. Second place is S4. The mountainy, watery, beautiful sets. It looks like a storybook world, something i really like. The stories about the narrow gauge railroad. I love it.Next is S2. I love the industrial setting, the detail in the sets, the crashes and character arcs, the runaways, the scary stuff too. And it wouldnt be a S2 analysis without mentioning Percy. He is the main character in the season, his arc was learning more about the island, and he had a little thing with everyone, made him my favorite character. Next up is probably S5, i like the way everything looks. Some stories are kind of weak, and some stories are insane, really action packed, it's fine i guess, its really good, dont murder me, but i just think it wasnt too interesting. It was cool and all, and very scary, like a big amount, i used to be terrified of the scary ones. Next is season 3, it was just not full of action, or had good narratives and continuity. If i had to state one, probably Percy and the fruity day, trust thomas etc.. about 6 and 7 i havent even watched it yet... If you disagree, make sure to tell me.
Personally I like season 5 and 3. Everything was so perfect. Not only did we get completely original stories, but most of them were executed so perfectly. The set designs, color levels, narration, soundtrack, character development, and variety of tone was what sealed the deal.

Season 7 is pretty much just a visually superior season 6 to me-‘nuff said.
I put Season 2 below Season 1 because of how constrained the second season felt. A lot of planned episodes were cut (including that famous example that was cut amidst filming) and Britt and David couldn’t film non-Awdry stories at the time. The experimentation with tone and filming technique really helps the season stand out but I can tell that was it for the studio at the time. I think it was a wise decision to hold off a third season to focus on other projects like Tugs and STS because Season 3 just went big and took it home.
Season 5 is a rollercoaster of emotions, tone, plot patterns, and visual atmosphere. I find that it has the best combination of spooky episodes (Haunted Henry, Duncan Gets Spooked), disastrous episodes (Put Upon Percy, Toby and the Flood), and funny episodes (Lady Hatt’s Birthday Party, Baa). Season 3 is quite similar, but Season 5 just goes above and beyond.
I have to agree that season 5 is the best season. The episodes are great to watch and both Baldwin and Angelis narrations are both great to listen to and the shininess of the models. Yup, this is the beast season of the classic series.

Great commentary video, the classic series of Thomas feels better probably than any era due to its mature tone and real-life relevance, in comparison to the later seasons which downgraded its mature tone for children (though to some extents watchable).
I also have two questions:
1) What college are you in, and what are you trying to study
2) Do you know any of the sister shows to Thomas the Tank Engine
To answer your questions, he's currently attending Chicago University. As for what he's majoring, I have no idea.
And yes, he does know of Tugs as well as the other reboots.

I love it! It’s so eerie but in a comedic way and the music where the dragon creeps up on Percy is still quite scary!

I’m British, so have always had Ringo Starr. Your proviso for Series 1 should also apply to Ringo - it seems like he’s not being too brave yet, and for Series 2 went further, and went even further on STS - his redubbed lines for Series 1 in the US make for a huge contrast. I don’t think that holding back in S1 is Ringo’s fault. Also, I’ve heard Carlin’s narrations but I prefer Ringo’s every day.

Let me say I don’t remember most of these seasons or episodes. If you’ve seen Paul’s Vids, Tidmouth Thunderbolt, Percy and the Beast Productions, etc., you’d know why I didn’t watch Thomas since (the actual show) I watch Thomas YTPs and fan made movies like your Revenge of The Ghost Train and The Engines of Sodor finale (all parts) but I think when Boggiston (sorry if I spelt his name wrong) gives Diesel 10 a talking to, (at 1:11:52) that Diesel 10 would split him in 2 (of course not showing that)
