He pushed his son to be the best he could be against Cell. He Decided to stay dead so his old enemies would stop attacking the Earth. We may not have always agreed with his thinking, but you could see the logic there. In the Buu saga he was ehhh a bit frustrating. In super he's just a different person all together lol.
